Is it happening at all? I haven't seen a single death.

I've had only one general die in 5 years time - think it was AP Hill (advanced rules)

It's way too rare then. A confederate general was more likely to die in battle than a confederate private.

You're missing out on so much gaming goodness, IMHO. I remember the joy, after many hours of COG as the Prussians, of killing Napoleon and capturing a couple of his best Generals.

yeah, based on Gils and Jchastains AAR I was hoping to master the strategical level first and then go for the detailed combat thing ... altough I tried a few detailed battles ... I stopped after Jacksons guys started to run like weasels - ouch !

There is a learning curve like no other game, except perhaps Europa Universalis 2, but once you get past it you will never be let down. My experience as a Beta-Tester for COG helped me but i am still slowly absorbing it all.

nah, hearts of iron 2 (doomsday) was still steeper - especially if you are going for a Barbarossa !

I don't think I've ever encountered a General's Death. Probably because I've only played Instant battles so far, which could use a little work.

I also play on instant battles (just don't have the time for full detail and more into the strategic side) and have never seen a general get killed or wounded. I'm hoping these events can happen during an instant battle or I'll be missing a big part of history.

Four- and five-star generals are immortal when it comes to quick combat, since during playtesting both testers and yours truly agreed that it REALLY sucked to lose a Lee or a Grant in a battle over which one had no control. Generals of lower ranks can and do die in quick combat, though it's really in detailed battle where they have the best chance of being wounded or killed.

It sucked to lose Johnston and McPherson in the real war but it happened. It should be rare but a possibility in the game.

We had a long debate over this in beta-testing. We all agreed that there is a big difference between losing a general in a battle in which one has some say regarding the outcome (= detailed battle) and one that is solved statistically without the player having any control of his general (= instant-resolve and quick combat). It was agreed that while lesser generals should be vulnerable in any type of battle, one's highest commander should not be lost in this manner, since it takes away from the gaming experience rather than adding to it.

I agree 100%, if you want a 5 star general killed you have to "earn it".

I have to agree....for those who don't want to do detail battles, this should be an option. Any chance this can become a game setup choice to please both parties? I think in general same results should be afforded to people who play different ways. Otherwise, kind of not getting the full effect as others.
