Hey, Solli - you're in logistics, right?

Is there any way to locate lists of port capacities (in tonnage of cargo per day/week/month), esp. for WW2 period? Not having much luck on Google and other search engines so far...

Sorry this took so long. I spent the week in Little Rock. Interesting seminar but the flights absolutely sucked!

Sorry, but I haven't found anything like that. I've looked too. I've looked for 2 separate things. One was what you mentioned and the other was the number and size of the slips in Japanese ports (mainly for ship production). I did this years ago, but haven't looked recently.

Is there any kind of list for CURRENT port capacity (i.e. - how much cargo can be moved in a port today? One would think this would be common knowledge for large shippers...)

If we knew that, we could get an idea of the relative capacities of ports, and then knowing what the capacity of some of the ports during WW2 (which i've seen) then we could make a better guesstimate of capacities then.

i am looking for amount of cargo that port could load or unload... this doesn't necessarily correspond to the amount of cargo that could be handled (i.e. - the US Army unloaded scads of supplies in Great Britain in 1942-1943... and couldn't handle it because they didn't have enough logistics troops. They spent about a year desperately trying to sort out almost 300,000 tons of stuff they just stuffed unlabelled into supply dumps...

Well apparently I am as good at losing battleships as RRoberson is at losing carriers. I'll have to do an official count now but I think, with the loss of Warspite last night, the total lost is 8 , not a one of those was a direct result of the PH attack.

I seem to be particularly good at losing RN battleships. So far I have lost POW, Repulse, Warspite and one other I can't seem to recall.

Yeah, all that rebellious teen angst energy dissappeared a few years ago, hence the Niceguy nickname. Doesn't mean I'm still not plotting to rule the world though.

Ah, I see. Nope, that's not something I ever had to worry about. I'll do some checking though.

Your last comment isn't anything new. When I was in Kosovo (2004-5) there were loads of CONEX containers that were unlabelled. We went around cutting off the locks to turn in whatever was inside. Some of the containers had been there since 1999. We turned in millions in equipment. Mother Army apparently forgot it had sent the stuff there.

Yep. Girlfriend unit put 20 of those gag candles that relight themselves on my cake. That's just not fair. I darned near passed out blowing them all out.

Thanks. Before I was in Little Rock (now that's a hoppin' place), I had some short suspenses and lots of work to do the get them done. Things have settled down since then. Four days of work next week and then I'm off for 10 days. My pre-New Year's resolution is to check in here daily while I'm off, and then make it a habit.

A while back, we compared ages of Threadians... i was the oldest regular Threadian... only other person i've personally corresponded with on the forum that is older is Pompack. There is somebody in his 70s, iirc, but i don't recall whom.

OK - here's an idea:

there are listings for current listings of how much tonnage ports handle in a year :

http://www.aapa-ports.org/files/Statistics/WORLD%5FPORT%5FRANKINGS%5F2004.xls

These can be broken down by country for relative ranking in the country of the ports, and calculate the percentage of cargo the port handles for the country in question.

Then, we can compare total exports and imports of a country in say 1936 (prior to war between Japan and China) - multiply this times the percentage of cargo, and get the amount of cargo the port handled before the war. THis would give an *idea* of the normal port capacity.

Of course, if we can find a list of cargo tonnages handled for the year in question, we could get a better idea.

That's pretty interesting, Robert. I deal with only a handful of ports, and they're all on either the West coast or Texas. The couple that show up on the list are pretty far down too. I did notice that some are regions, such as NY/NJ.

Edit: Uh, that's East coast, not west.....

i've found some obscure books on DEI port statistics up to 1940... dunno if i want to shell out around $30 to see if they have any interesting info, though.

200 tons per port level per ship per day. Do you really think Gary just made up an arbitrary number?
