I'm new to the forum and somewhat new to tactical games. It's been a lot of 1st person shooters lately, but played a lot of tactical games in my youth. I've recently played Flashpoint Germany and like the game very much; are there any similar games worth playing?

i find myself swapping between shoot-en-up and think-em-up games, especially when i want a different challenge, Matrix (and other publishers) have a wide selection of games, some traditional in style and some very different innovative.

what periods of history so you like ? WW2, Napoleonic, Modern, ACW etc

what did you play before, hex based games ?

i am sure the people here can give some good recommendation if you let us know what era and style you like.

a free game called Steel Panthers World at War is available here from Matrix. its a WW2 hex based tactical game, very addictive and very popular.

Well, I've played so many WWII games now so I'd like to try another period. I think I'm up for modern era games now, just like Flashpoint Germany.

Hi Claes,

There's a sequel to Flashpoint Germany in the works, you'll no doubt be glad to hear. In the meantime, you might enjoy The Operational Art of War III, which has tons of modern warfare scenarios at various scales including just above grand tactical. You might also enjoy Tin Soldiers: Julius Caesar or Massive Assault, both of which are 3D and fairly tactical.

Regards,

- Erik

I suspected there's a sequel for Flashpoint Germany in the works. Are there any info on that title you can share?

The last catalogue said 'coming soon - Flashpoint Middle East', although I've no idea if that's an Arab v Israeli thing or US beats up on assorted Iraqis and/or Syrians and/or Iranians thing. Very much hoping it's the former as, fan of Flashpoint Germany as I am, the latter scenario is pretty much zzzzzzzzz.. time for me.

The Tin Soldiers games are excellent if you feel like dipping into ancients as another WW2 alternative. On the modern front you could try either the HPS 'Modern Battles' series (Fulda Gap, North German Plain, Mid East '67 & '73) or, my particular recommendation, the newly released Air Assault Task Force from Shrapnel/Prosim which has scenarios ranging from the Ia Drang valley to Mogadishu and Afghanistan. Almsot as short on eye candy as its predecessors, but it was designed by soldiers who also happen to be gamers, and it really shows.

Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank would be your choice then. Or if if that isn't modern enough, I'll direct you at Titans of Steel, MegaMek and MekWars
