An immigrant worker from Mexico found a likeness of the Virgin Mary in a lump of chocolate at a candy factory in LA last week. The had to shut the whole production line down unitl the Bishop came by and blessed the line. Its a miracle!

Yes, the poor, dumb, bastard. He might well have got off, were it not for misguided romantic notions, but, he was star-crossed, after all, the Love Boat is all about romance.

Meanwhile, Yossarian is in New Zealand...where it is nice and safe

Maybe we can trade these guys for the survivors of the Kiwi Brigade and US Artillery Regt lost at Suva?

These are the actual names of Tongans of Japanese and German origin sent to New Zealand for internment when war broke out. There was a camp on Somes Is., near Wellington.

Five Jap Divisions, 2 Ind. Brigades, a bunch of toy tanks and a menagerie of artillery types are squeezing Bataan. This wouldn't be enough if the US Navy would hold up their end of the bargain and bring in supplies. The P-40's bugged out..now they poor defenders are getting hammered by air. Supplies were coming in by single AK's until
5 days ago...now the Japs are onto us. The battle wont last long now.
This is one of those WITP melancholy moments. The fall of Soerabaja didn't bother me because most of the units didn't know how to load their guns. In contrast, even the regular Philippino Army divisions are trained up to high skill levels after their long fights for Manila and Clark and Lingayen. This is going to ruin my day.

(Blah...freakin' jpg conversions...this thing looked like it just came off the desk of the USAFFE intel. officer in April 1942 when it was in bmp format.)

**********USAFFE HQ, Malinta Tunnel, Corregidor, April 8, 1942*******

<Gen. MacArthur reclines in a barber chair with cucumber slices over his eyelids, his Philippino valet works on his nose hairs, which can be quite an annoyance in the humid air of Corregidor>

MacArthur: Rodolfo, I just got off the blower with Wainright, the Japs made another big push on Bataan today. The 4th Marines held them well, but he says they are running low on everything. Better ask Adm Hart to work out the details of my planned evacuation by PT boat.

Rodolfo: <he knows the General well and, prudently withdraws the scissors from the Generals nostrils before proceeding> Sir, I am quite sure Adm. Hart left yesterday on the Jefferson Myers with some 1000 men of Asian Fleet Hq. If I am not mistaken, PT 42, the last one afloat was lost off Lingayen over a week ago.

MacArthur: <sits upright, throwing off the drape, visciously tearing at the cucumber slices> DAMNIT! WHY DOESN'T ANYONE TELL ME THESE THING? AM I NOT THE COMMANDING GENERAL? HOW AM I TO MAKE BRILLIANT DECISIONS WITHOUT GOOD INFORMATION? DAMNIT! HART WILL JUST HAVE TO TURN AROUND WITH THE JEFFERSON MYERS AND COME BACK.

Rodolfo: <takes another step back and puts his scissors behind his back> Sir, the Myers took another torpedo hit. Word is they will be lucky to beach her sir. There is no hope of return to Bataan.

MacArthur: DAMNIT ALL! DAMNIT ALL! HART CAN SWIM WITH THE FISHES FOR ALL I CARE. DOESN'T THE NAVY KNOW WHAT KIND OF ASSET THEY HAVE IN THE COMMANDER OF USAFFE? Well, please notify the commander of that small Dutch Dornier squadron. We will have to use them.

Rodolfo: <takes another step back, now pinned against the wall..he squints slightly> Sir, the Dorniers redeployed to Darwin 5 days ago.

MacArthur: WHAT?!?..........

****Serene garden scene near the offices of Lord Kido, April 1, Tokyo****

Lord Kido: <studies a bonsai with small clippers in his hands, speaks to an aide without even looking at him> I regard this report of a twin of Gen. MacArthur commanding the Southwest Pacific Headquarters in Australia to be ludicrous and and will inform the Emperor so. Clearly, it is a clever misinformation campaign, but it occurs to me, this cleverness can be used to our advantage. If there are two Generals, then the General is paid twice to complete the subterfuge. Instruct one of our agents in Washington, perhaps the nisei, codemane 'Miyagi', who is the gardener for Gen. Marshall, to verify my supposition, then anonymously pass the information along to that cretin Truman. His so-called 'War Profiteerig Committee' is worth two of our carrier diviisons in the damage it does to the enemy war effort. Report to me when it is done. <the aide bows and departs>

<Lord Kido turn the bonsai to gain a different perspective, then says aloud to himslelf> Just like a perfectly trimmed bonsai, a paln must be harmonious. I will also instruct an agent in Australia to prepare a document.

*****Office of Sen. Truman, Washington, April 11, 1942*****

Mr. Cohn (legal counsel to the Senate Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program): Senator, I thought you would want to see this before the first meeting of the Committee on the 15th. It seems that Gen. MacArthur is receiving two paychecks every month.

Truman: Two? Are you quite sure? Couldn't there be two officers with a similar name. It is a big Army.

Mr. Cohn: Yes sir, we looked into that. Same first and last name, same date of birth, same social security number. Its not combat pay either. The checks are equal.

Truman: Roy, this is dynamite. It isn't enough to have an entire floor of the Manila Hotel, a brewery and God knows what else. Now he is double-dipping.

*************Ford Is. NAS, Pearl Harbor, April 4, 1942***************

<a number of pilots from VT-3 from USS Saratoga are loitering about in the Officer's Club while Saratoga is away on a raid on Canton Is. With the group is Commander Massey, skipper of VT-3>

Ensign Gay: <rushes excitedly into the Officer's Club> Commander, commander! You have to see this..outside!

Cmmdr. Massey: What is it Gay?

Ensign Gay: You have to see sir. You won't believe it!

<the group begins to filter out of the club, Massey in the lead. Outside is agroup of at least 100 Naval Airmen, all very young, many with severe sunburns after their brief experience with Hawaii. More than a few have their shoes on their wrong feet. >

Young Lt: Commander <salutes> Here are your replacements sir.

Cmmdr. Massey: Replacements? We didn't call for replacements.

Young Lt.: Sir, its policy. We always do this when a carrier based squadron is ashore.

Massey: Lt., you must have 100 men here. We have no bunks abaord ship for them. Besides, what would they fly?

Young Lt.: Oh, we thought of that too sir. There are 36 brand new TBD's ready on runway B. Admiral Kimmel sends his regards.

Massey: What? You have to be kidding. We can't fit another 36 TBD's on the Saratoga. That has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Young Lt: Policy, sir. Ford Island NAS Special Standing Order n. 22..............

OK all you WITP braniacs, pretend I didn't read the "readme" files with the WITP updates.

Has the rail "catapult" effect been fixed......ie....does a unit starting it's movement in a rail hex gain the rail movement rate even if moving across a hexside that has no rail crossing?

For this discussion, which of course is purely academic, and has bearing on any contest , assume we are talking about the hexes diagramed below

Hey, VSWG, is that a laden or unladen swallow?  I think the unladen ones go at rail rate...

For Gawd's sakes, don't say "I don't know," or you'll be sorry...
