A number of my friends and I, with loving memories of napoleonic wargames are trying to play COG online. BUT CANNOT

This is particularly horrible. We cannot join the game we have turned off all firewalls but still the host is invisible. Can someone please explain the external IP address thing? HEEEELLLLLPPPPP!

Many of us experience the same connectivity issues. Hopefully they'll be ironed out someday.

Crown of Glory uses DirectPlay 4.0, which means some more work is required by the player in order to get everything configured properly before it will be visible. You have to make sure hardware (i.e. router) and software firewalls allow the right ports through or are off entirely. It just takes one involved player to have the wrong settings to cause them to not see the game. Can you provide more info on your setup?
