Ok, I gotta admit -- when I used to play games on the C-64, I really liked "Red Storm Rising". For a primitive subsim, that wasn't bad at all.

Years later, there was Silent Hunter II -- I still play it once in awhile. It IS playable if you can still find some of the mods -- thankfully, I have a CD of some of the better ones.

I was just thinking, though, wouldn't it be cool if Matrix grabbed up one of the old classic subsims -- "Aces of the Deep", maybe?

Is there any interest in this , ahem, subgenre of wargames?

Silent Hunter 4 is due for release this year and its based on the Pacific theatre.

There is also Silent Hunter 3 but the Starforce Protection has scuppered it for most folks. Personaly I use a NOCD Patch on it to run without SF.

I knew nothing of SF before purchase and refuse point blank to have it on any of my PC's.

Dangerous Waters is also availible, I spend hours sitting with my earphones on picking up sonar contacts and listening for humping whales

There's certainly a lot of interest (WW2, anyway), but I can't see any point in picking up old games when there are some excellent recent ones. SH3 is the best to date by quite a way, Starfarce aside, and SH4 should be even better.

Dangerous Waters is indeed an excellent modern sim (and an absolute steal at the $20 price you can now pick it up for), but sold poorly despite great reviews. Like Birth of America it now seems to be being sold all over, with assorted box and download releases and on Steam. They did a superb printed manual too (a 300 page spiral bound job sold seperately) for the original Battlefront release if you can still get hold of it.

I really liked the Red Storm Rising boardgame...although not having someone to play it with was a bit of a stickler...I always won!!

I would like to see that made into a computer game. I also had The Hunt for Red October but that was not really a game to play on my own...even more so than Red Storm Rising as you had to search for the Red October How does that work on your own!!?!!

The impression I get is that the campaign will be much the same as SHIII but this time some of the missions will have sepcific historical objectives, also there will be on the fly radio requests to assist in say beach landings or targetting a specific ship and whether you attend or not is up to you. I hope its an elaborated version of what the GWX mod has done for SHIII. Which is definitely worth DLing by the way if you haven't already, transforms the sim tbh.

I would quite like to see a strategic sub wargame.. You could play as Germany or UK/USA and would have to deploy your subs or escort resources with new tech's coming in, etc.. A sort of battle of the atlantic version of Bombing the Reich

You can get the direct download version of SHIII and it doesn't have Starforce.  I learned this after I got the game as a gift.  D'oh.  But I love the game, though I'm no navy expert i find it realistic and more important, fun.

It's a reall shame you know.

I have SHIII and the free Grey Wolves mod (I think it's called that), but I will not install it. See, along with other games I own that had Starforce, I noticed a significant slowdown in my DVD writer and an increase in burning failure rate. I assumed, as most people may have done, that the slow down was due to the system and my failure rate was due to low rate media...so I spent months trying different media and defragging my system and making sure memory was at a max, as was disk space and still nothing.

It wasn't until reading someone elses post suffering the same symptoms who had uninstalled Starforce I realised it could be that. When I uninstalled my games with Starforce AND Starforce itself, my system was right as rain!!

So...I'm afraid there is no SHIII for me. I wish UBI would release a No Starforce patch like what happened for XIII Reunion

I wish I could "dive" again! :-(

Well, HERE's the issue for me -- I bought SH III, but my PC isn't sophisicated enough to run it. Had to return it. SH II (plus most mods) is the limit for my present setup.

However, there are older out-of-print subsims that are regarded as classics, and I started this thread to catch the attention of Dave H and the Matrix staff, and to gauge the interest.

For those of us without souped-up gaming PCs, I think there IS a market for something like this. Do you folks agree?

I agree with that.  Even after all these years I still find myself playing Aces of The Deep and Fast Attack. 

BTW, Both of these run just fine using DOSBox.

Now, if there would be any single subsim Matrix could acquire, my first choice is Command: Aces of the Deep. A review by Neal Stevens, webmaster of Subsim, is here:

Now, I would LOVE to have this one. Silent Hunter II ended up being a trainwreck, only kept alive by dedicated modders. COAD was complete, and pretty much had it all. THIS is the one Matrix should acquire. Who's with me?

I have a better idea. What about a CARRIER sim??????? There have been battleship sims to a certain extent (Bismark etc) but no CV ones that I recall.

Get the No-CD patch. I don't know what the forum moderators feel about the No-CD thing so I don't want to tell you where to exactly get it but google around for it.

1. Install SH3
2. Install the latest SH3 patch.
3. Install the No-CD files

Then run the game. Do not reboot or run the game at any time during steps 1 and 2.

Voila! No Starforce. I had the same problems as you and I sat on my copy of SH3 for months before I got this to work.

As for moderating...I have bought a game I cannot use...I have no issue with no-cd fixes.

No don't panic the devs have stated that, it's still a dynamic campaign which this time will include a dynamic mission generator for missions like: drop off coast watchers, rescue pilots, photo recon etc.

I have been following this game for a while the only issue is that it has been in development for a long time and it is still in Alpha.  Same issue I have with Global Conflict Blue another fine example of a good open source game but with no end in sight.  www.gcblue.com

Well, thx to this thread, KG, and the helpful, people at Matrix Games, I am now, once again, enjoying Silent Hunter III completely Starforce free!

Thx all...a great game breathes again...

Now if anyone can work out how to get GT Legends running without Starforce, I'll be a happy bunny.

And don't worry Matrix...I'm not talking illegally. I just want to legally play the game I purchased legally

No, I disagree. I don't think there is a market for this. C:AOD was good and had (very few things) that plain SHIII still does not have (more radio traffic and "Milchkühe" resupply subs and ships), but they have been modded into SHIII, if you want them. C:AOD still seems to run in DOSBox (and there was a windows version too, support voice commands, if I remember correctly), so I don't see a real market out there. In addition, I believe that many old games are overrated, since people romanticize their gaming past (but this is my personal opinion. I still have boxes of old games and I LOVED in the past but I know it's much better to only remember playing them than actually fire them up again ...)

Well, dang. I PM'ed Dave H about this, but I don't know if Matrix really has any interest in a subsim.

Hertson mentioned "Danger in the Deep", which has promise, but little progress has been made on it recently. I'd hate to see that idea wither and die.

So, the consensus seems to be that the SH series has the market cornered. Oh, well, if nothing else, maybe Matrix will at least consider the idea.
