Ok, I have medieval II, civ IV,tried the COH demo, play Axis and Allies board games but I'm looking for something with a little more teeth to it tactically (WWII era). I don't want to handle supply chain or production, I want company level tactical fighting. What gets me is looking at screenshots of COTA and it just looks very confusing. I guess I don't like looking at 100 counters all lined up against each other, it just seems too abstract for me to feel "immersed" especially with what I'm used to for strategy gaming. Any suggestions? Currently I'm downloading the Steelpanthers free game, so I guess I'll try that out. What else is out there? I guess after looking at this website for two weeks I'm lost on where to go, what to do.

You might want to check out Panzer Command here or the Combat Mission series over at Battlefront.com.

I think you are talking about the wrong game here...COTA does not "line up" icons against each other...in fact, there are no "lines" in COTA, and it is that which is the great appeal of the game.

I think I understand what you mean, though. I guess you have an issue with "counters" in general for that immersive factor...and that's fine. Some people cannot get immersed in a game with counters. Well, Steel Panthers is a good squad based tactical game, although I never got on with the graphics...I found them too "messy".

As Baby Arm (I hope that isn't a reference to what I think it's a reference to ) suggested, try Panzer Command. I played the deom and, if I didn't have Combat Mission trilogy, I would probably have bought it...although it does look a bit more "refined" than Combat Mission.

Also, as another suggestion, try the combat mission games....you must be able to pick them up cheap as chips now.

I don't know where you are, but Amazon.com have it for less than $20
http://www.amazon.com/Take-2-Combat-Mission-Anthology/dp/B000GR004I/sr=8-1/qid=1169116380/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7717873-1548161?ie=UTF8&s=videogames
and Amazon.co.uk in the uk have it for £30
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CDV-Combat-Mission-Anthology-PC/dp/B0002LIFJK

I'd say, though, that Panzer Command:Winter Storm would be a good start...I personally think Combat Mission games are less intuitive and more work.

Hi D-Lad - You may want to check out the COTA 5 minute tutorial video over at http://cota.matrixgames.com (in the download area). It will at least give you an idea of how the mechanics work. Its easy to get started because the AI helps you a lot.

You may want to look at Strategic Command 2 (battlefront.com) or switch eras and look at something like Take Command 2nd Manassas.  Both have demos.

Best of luck!

You would probably be suited to a game at squad/platoon level then, to comprise your company maneuver elements.

Until Matrix releases Lock n' Load Heroes of Stalingrad or their WinXP version of the old Talonsoft Front series, I don't believe they market such a beast.

You may want to try HPS Simulation's Squad Battles series which is purely tactical and covers all theatres of WW2. Combat Mission as someone else has suggested is another option but 3d - or try a boardgame such as GMT Games' new Combat Commader Europe.

I personally would have suggested Matrix/SSG's Battles in Normandy/Battles for Italy but their scale is regimental and their engine is based on "counters all lined up together" - really! But great grand tactical games.

D_Ladd,
You should give CoTA a second look.
The beauty of the design is that while it may seem complicated, it is very easy to learn and play.
It is also scaleable and has many scenarios to help you ease into it.

These games, and the Steel Panthers series in general, rock. I keep coming back to them again and again, long after HoI2 has begun gathering dust.

Check out the demo of Take Command:Second Manassas at MadMinuteGames froum or at their Paradox subforum. It is the most immersive historical tactical game I have ever played. You can pick your level, from a cavalry troop to a division or corps commander all the way up to commanding the whole army. The AI has no cheats and is very hard to beat. Check it out.
