Did anyone see the Weapons of World War II show based on Aircraft Carriers?? It was a very good history of Carrier Operations, starting with the first plane to fly from a ship (Though he couldn not land back on it!). It covered the Royal Navy attack on Taranto - that caught the eye of a certain Yamamoto. There was also the USA bomber mission that flew from carriers to bomb mainland japan, they were so heavily laden some of them nearly ditched off the bow! Apparently they did the bombing and flew on to China as they couldn't land back on the Carrier- brave guys! A good effort and thoroughly worth 30 minutes of your time.

Andy, please tell me that your sheltered British upbringing had at least informed you of the Doolittle Raid some time before now... While it was tactically a waste, that raid did prompt the Imperial high command to adopt Yamamoto's plans to attack Midway in hopes of destroying the american carriers - so it was of prime import to fans of WITP. And no, we do not get to base B25s on carriers in the game.

(As another "And No" - there were no pilots on the raid who had illegally flown with the RAF before returning to fly P40s over Oahu in Dec 7, 1941. Doolittle chose the most experienced B25 squadron in the USAAC to perform this mission).

Why would you assume that I thought you could base B25's on Carriers in the game?? I implied nothing of the sort.

Sorry, that was a typical WITP joke... we'ra always finding fault with not being able to do things in tha game that occurred in real life. I forgot that you haven't been around here forever like some of us... my apologies. My jokes come out a little stale on occasion (kind of like my reference to "the movie that shall not be named").

As for the "sheltered British upbringing" joke... In the US the Doolittle Raid is taught with reverence. Kids in high school come (at least back when I was in school) out thinking that it changed the direction of the war. It isn't until we study deeper that we find out the truths behind the story.

I'm sure that there is plenty of UK history that I don't know about, but my BA in History was mainly British Colonial and Maritime history (the US being basically an offshoot of the British Empire), so there's little WW2 British history that would surprise me. I keep asking for a WITP level game covering the campaigns of the Royal Navy from 1740-1820.

BTW: there's a movie called 30 Seconds Over Tokyo about this. It's an old one, so not terribly accurate, but enjoyable. It was also a book that I read when I was ten or eleven...

EDIT: and I never took your post as denigrating to the men of the Doolittle Raid. It's just that it was taught so universally in the US when I was young that it was surprising to me that someone who was enough into the Pacific War to try this game would have been unaware of the raid. This is more an indictment of my own american bias than any attack on foreign knowledge of an admittedly minor attack (with unforseen results).

WW2 is barely on syllabus in UK Schools in Scotland it was focussed on the Great Reform Act, Pitt the Younger, Chartists, Napoleonics, 1848, German Unification, Italian Unification, Crimea, US Civil War (a little), Opium Wars, Indian Mutiny and the Bismark in general (kulterkampf etc) through till WW1 including causes etc (at least in my school !!!) so 1795 - 1918 was the examinable period (Basically anything in a Flashman Book was in syllabus )

WW2 in total got about a week of tuition mostly on the Holocaust, rise of the Nazi Party, Dunkirk, Battle of Britain, Dresden and a little bit Japan (but very little) WW2 was not an examinable subject so it was covered lightly we certainly didnt cover the Pacific in detail.

In the US, the Doolittle Raid is about as well known as Dunkirk is in England. Both also occured at the darkest hours of the war and were a much needed boost to morale at home. The main difference is that Dunkirk was not planned in advance, it was saving the BEF from complete disaster and the Doolittle Raid was planned from the start for its propaganda value.

I heard an interview with one of the surviving Doolittle pilots. He said that the ship was rolling on high seas and the deck captain was timing the launches with the rolling of the ship. When a B-25 released it's brakes and started rolling, it would be going downhill into a wall of water. By the time it reached the end of the deck, the ship had pitched up and the B-25 was given a little extra lift off the deck.

Doolittle had the toughest take off because he was the first to take off and had the least amount of deck in front of him.

I also read an article several years ago about an SBD pilot from the Enterprise who was airborne on ASW patrol when the B-25s were launching. He got to witness the whole thing from above. Later in the war, he became the only person to land a P-51 on a carrier when they tested a navalized version of the P-51 on the Shangri La. (The Navy thought the P-51 performed well around the carrier, but the Corsair and Hellcat were considered sufficient and they liked having all air cooled radials on their carriers.)
