Air losses were horrendous as expected. Andy doesn't even counter attack the KB.
The hope is that my bombers one day will find a fat target with less than 1-200 enemy fighters.
This is a rather slim hope though.

Let's continue to shoot down enemy planes, if we shoot down enough before the enemy can land enough troops
to capture Iwo, the day will be ours.

Supply situation is good and more troops from the crack Imperial Guards Division have been brought in - at a high price!

The Yamato TF had home port set to Iwo Jima 2 days ago, it both started and ended the turn in the same hex and shared it
with 100 enemy warships! Can't explain this, maybe there were too many ships for the AI to handle?

Not checked for Militia Divs Pauk, saw a very poor div when I examined my units but it was called a 'Division' and not a Militia unit.
Is Marcus Island considered a part of the Home Islands? Didn't think so....

Somehow Andy's score has dropped 5-6k below that of Japan!?
May be a major base low on supplies, and it may be that Japan receives more points for kills in 1945.
Me will check

Nope, couldn't find anything...so a base out of supplies is the only reason why Andy should have dropped 6k points behind again.
Let's sit back and let Andy run the show for a couple of days

Well i think you are right - those Militia units are divisions, arriving with 25 % or so of TOE so it seems it's working. If you have enough PP you can change HQ of these units to other HQ (but i'm not sure if this makes any sense or purpose so late in the game). No, Marcus isn't part of HI...

I really doubt that Japan recives more points for kills in 1945...really interesting drop on points....

Did you consider a KB strike with only few TB/DB airgroups? Perhaps you can avoid unescorted strikes (at least that is what i did and it worked)... What about 2-3 Grace daitias set on 6 hexes and fighters on 80% escort?

I doubt that your ac will ever attack other target while the enemy carriers are in the area. That is how it game works.

Will check it closer next turn, I'm using the political points to release regiments instead of that big division.
Have to move them by air and fast transport anyway.

Can send out the Zekes to kill more enemy fighters, but I got soo many dive bombers ashore. Would like to strike some enemy ships with them.
Seems like the KB will get more opportunities since Andy is all defensive. Let's hit him in the rear next time...

There are so many enemy cv's around - think the AI auto targets the biggest formations. This is quite horrible in late war for Japan because of the Uber CAP. Imagine having a target priority: CV TF, Surface TF, Transport TF

I have refuelled the fleets at Bonin, taking a defensive posture for now.
Not sure I can run fast transports with so many enemy BBs at Iwo.

Hey, PzB. I've been following this AAR since the start of the invasion of India but haven't posted before. But as a fledgling Japanese player I finally have to post just to say this: you, sir, are my hero. Good luck in the difficult days ahead!

Here we go! Andy invades Iwo Jima.
Can he land enough troops and support them until the forts have been overcome?

Both sides engage in surface battles and the damage heavy cruiser Pittsburgh is sunk.
The US fleet is suffering constant attrition and our position on Iwo Jima is stronger despite
all their efforts. I'm considering moving a large HQ to Bonin Jima with a range of 5 hexes.
This can support the fighting on Iwo as well.

I'm preparing a reinforcement convoy for Iwo Jima. Will send it in if necessary together with
the fleet and dozens or cargo ships and support vessels. Some men are bound to get through.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/13/45

Invasions

Andy unloades 3 full divisions, 2 HQs, 6 artillery units and a number of other aux units on

Thx Cuttlefish, nice to hear from you
Need all the support I can get these days....

If we turn back the enemy now he may never be able to come back.
If the enemy captures Iwo, life will be unpleasent in the Home Islands - at best!

Pauk, I've received 6-8 Militia Divisions: Have a look!

More blood for you!

Andy threatens with total destruction at whatever cost. Will wreck the US Navy to
occupy Iwo he states.

As you wish...

Looks like Andy is moving his TFs to Marcus Island for replenishment.
We struck at him at great cost as always, damaged a couple of carriers and an anti aircraft cruiser.
Another 50 Hellcats down.

I'm burning powder at an alarming rate, but if we don't stop Andy now it will only become increasingly
difficult. I will committ rookie squadrons if I have to. Half a dozen enemy warships are put out of commission
every day. Todays victims include 1 cv, 1 cvl, 1 cve, 1 claa and numerous dds.

If we only can reduce Andy's fighter strength our numerous bombers will be able to increase this number
as the enemy ships travels to and from Marcus to Iwo.

Also planning massive reinforcement convoys. Andy isn't the only one who can play 'Brute force'.
If I load up 300 transports and cargo ships, I'll see him stop more than 1/3!

I can also play 'Brutus' if required!

Tomorrow we launch the largest Kamikaze strikes of the war: some 160 Zekes will swarm the enemy and peck him
to death. No scrouples whatsoever. This is total war!

Moving the Northern Area HQ to Bonin Jima to bolster support for the Armies in the Bonins.
Starting to transfer reserves from the DEI as soon as the last units have been withdrawn from China.

Btw, Matrix: The 'Baka bombs' doesn't work - can't even hit the ground.
Jap fanboys requests that this Uber weapon is fixed! Could have achieved great things with them over the last
week but they always miss, even dead in the water ships. Considering converting the Special Betty Units into Kamikaze
units

that's way to go!

Andy keeps his carriers on defence and he will continue to do that - i know him well. What he will do now? According to numbers of CV fighters he will withdraw to repelnish lost pilots - this was a crucial turn and you manage to hit one of his CV! His goal is achived - enemy troops are on Iwo Jima are on the beaches.

You must be ready to reinforce Iwo Jima when he withdraw his carriers (i hope that he doesn't have two CV Fleets - one in action and other in reserve waiting to replace exausted ones). Moving a big HQ to Bonin sounds like good plan.

His Hellcat losses are horrible - 2192 - that is a 15 months of production but he should have three months of production in reserve (450 more Hellcats). If i didn't miscalculated, he can replace his losses, so be careful!

Banzai!

Hi PzB,

Just wanted to thank you for the great AAR.  I don't own this game and probably never will, but read you and Andy's AAR for the pure entertainment value.  This battle around the Bonins has been great!

Great AAR PzB. Just two questions. 1) How have you managed to achieve these A2A exchange ratios given the decline in the quality of Jap pilots.
2) What experience rating do most of your kamikazis have before you send them into battle? They appear to be quite effective.

Thanks

I'm stuck home with the flu, so I'm playing a turn every now and then when I feel up to it.
Results and gameplay may suffer accordingly <G>

Unfortunately the Franklin is a tugh hombre Pauk, but I think she got the message!-)
Andy must have some 30 cvs and cvls in the area and another 15 cve's. He's left several
at Iwo to provide a Uber CAP that I can't penetrate.

Really don't think and hope he got 500 Hellcats left. Then I'm toast.
Andy has received squadrons with Hellcats drawn from the pool that haven't been all shot down, shouldn't that be correct?
Andy's using his Hellcat night fighters and Corsairs to replace losses. Anyway, he should be out of pilots
and all replacements will be green..very green.

"my Marine Fighter are starting to top up the Hellcats as are my F6F - N's" - Andy

I have a fresh tank regiment at Bonin in transports as well as other reinforcements.
Doesn't dare to send them in yet, having 100 transports with a full tank division, regiment and artillery loading up.
Time is all important. If Andy needs reinforcements we have time, if not.....

Losses to my transports have been heavy, but I am still able to field enough to continue flying in troops of the Imp division
and a engineer regiment to Iwo.

Always nice with new posters!

Fcam,

1. Exchange ratios are quite bad - like 1/5 or worse. If you consider that all but Oscar fighters have been trained to an average of 75 exp in China, you will understand that there hasn't really been a decline in pilot quality yet. Some of my units have had an avg exp of 82 and 83. They're still being shot out of the sky like bugs in a tennis court.

2. I operate with 2 kinds of kamikaze units. Those already converted and now receiving replacements. They have an average exp of 30-40. The new units being converted have average exp ratings of 60-75. I do this to achieve results, but it comes at a horrible long time cost as I will never be able to convert these units back to 'normal squadrons'.

Thx for the support Lojishen! Any battle will be boring after this one....

Here's a taster for the next turn:
170 experienced kamikaze's ordered to attack.
Yamato attempts to intercept enemy moving back to Marcus.
KB has been replenished with 300 new ac and will press on the attack on enemy shipping between Iwo and Marcus.

Agree with Pauk on the F6 numbers but its andys pilot pool thats been hardest hit isn't it ? Nice to see a good kami attack too, but shame about the ohka being useless, just pondering if you did convert to kami would the baka be added to the already fearsome betty kami load ? might really be worth it after all.

and as ever good luck and great fight by the way

The KB's last fight! Kamikaze attacks!! - 2/4/2007 8:51:26 PM

I got a lot of potentially effective kamikaze units Rob, the problem is that in 19/20 attempts my bombers hit the
Uber CAP wall. So it's almost impossible to convert the right units and launch them at the right time.
Today the first Betty kamikaze units launched. 60+ exp pilots couldn't hit their un-CAP'ed targets.

As more and more of my kamikaze units are re-established with green pilots, we will be sending them out in large waves
against the enemy.

To my surprise Andy moves ALL his ships out of Iwo Jima. His boasting about replenishing ships and carriers
at sea was just...boast!?

Nagumo's bold decision *ahem * to move slowly south and face the enemy again triggered the KBs last fight!
Superior enemy carrier forces from the East hit our flanks, shot down our CAP fighters and destroyed 6 out of 7
carriers. The Taiho survived moderately damaged.

This is the third, and final time the KB is sunk!
Personally I think that's enough!-)

Considered carefully whether we should retire yesterday, and most likely we should have.
But I felt that a bold move could force a decision: this was a gamble and we lost. Been expecting this for some time.
As soon as Andy turned his carriers on naval attack, the end would come.

I could no longer afford to place more Zekes on the KB and it was only escorted by 8 destroyers and 2 seplane tenders.
The Surface Fleet is required to defend the Bonins.

I'm using the opportunity to move a fast transport unit to Iwo, let's see if Andy is coming straight back at us.
Our transports have now increased the assault value at Iwo to 752.

It looks like Andy will do what he told me he would, go and pick up another 100k troops and unload them under his Uber CAP.
I will try to put as many troops in his way as possible, but this is like a race against the tide. I'm feeling that we're able to inflict crushing damage to the US fleet though.

The last fight of the KB!

With several enemy carrier formations moving in from Marcus Island the KB is trapped.
I gambled on that Andy would be moving after the KB – not staying in the exact same area we attacked yesterday. Unfortunately our last strike was another grossly uncoordinated strikes with all escorts and 8 bombers in one raid and the bombers in another.

In a way I’m glad I don’t have to worry about the KB anymore, it’s good to have as a fleet in being from 1944-45 – but the results are usually very disappointing.

The Taiho is only moderately damaged and can manage 20 knots. She will retire with the 2 seaplane tenders. One of the Shokaku’s can still make 9 knots, but I doubt she’ll make it.
All other ships but a cvl are scuttled.

Even on our worst of days losses are not higher than the historical rate for 1945.
That's a small comfort

In a few days I will have re-established most of the units that Andy has smashed on the ground.
This way we can rotate the formations permanently, fleshing them out with fresh pilots. Losses are
so breath taking that the vet pilots are given a better chance as the enemy goes after the easy targets first.

I'm sending the 1st Battle Fleet with the Yamato straight into the path of the retreating enemy carrier, should be
able to return to Bonin afterwards.

The 2nd Battle Fleet will sweep Iwo and protect the fast transports. More kamikaze ac will launch from Bonin tomorrow
in support of these missions.

At Bonin itself there are 20 TF's and smaller surface combat TFs.
Unloading the Tank Regiment and Kembu HQ. Will move them to Iwo by Fast Transport if Andy doesn't return tomorrow.
Will take some time before our slow convoys arrive with reinforcements. That will be a desperate move...

The 'best' kamikaze is the kamikaze that hits the enemy.
In practice this is any ac with a high enough service ceiling to fly in 'above' the enemy Uber CAP.
Zeke A6M5 and George - if you can spare any.

These will make sure you get a few hits, but the damage will not be great on anything larget than dd/cl type of warship.
CVE/CVLs are vulnerable while the new US CVs usually takes Zeke kamikaze hits with little damage.

In theory the heavier the load an ac carries, the better a kamikaze it is. Bettys and Frances are ideal that way.
Would send them in around 10-15k feet if I didn't expect a CAP.

If you play with a mod that has reduced A2A deadliness and that allow 'leakers' to get through the enemy, I would
send my kamikazes in between 5 and 15k feet with a few at 30k to disperse enemy defending fighters.

If you play a stock game...I can't really advice you, as this would be up to you and your opponent.
As it is Uber CAP reduces deadliness of kamikaze considerably and we will never see a kamikaze threat ala the size
of real life in 44-45.

For important targets, like Iwo Jima invasion fleet and enemy carriers - I'm using high exp kamikaze units as low exp ones (30-45)
never seem to hit anything but immobile targets.

I got a 48 ac Betty unit carrying Ohkas.
Divided it into 3 units of 16 ac. Been using 2 of them from the Marianas.
They've launched a 10-20 missions, mostly in small 1-2 ac formations. Exp is ca 64-65.

These units are not exposed to FLAK, but they are still not able to hit anything.
Never witnessed a single hit

It's curious how the Uber CAP can turn a hex into a no-fly zone except for air transports. Where a several 100's a/c strike gets slaughtered to a single plane, the cumbersome, defenseless, unescorted transports can continue to ferry in troops with relative impunity. What an oversight on part of the designers!

Andy thought the Empire needed something to improve morale and sent a list of sunk and damaged ships!
We replied by adding another 20 ships to his list!!

Today we did everything right, surprised Andy's carriers with a battleship group while the Yamato et al scattered
a convoy and sinking most of its escorts. A fast transport group brought 2000 men and supplies to Iwo Jima and our pilots
scored hits on numerous enemy ships. An enemy carrier is hit by 2 kamikazes and put on fire.

In all some 18 enemey ships were damaged or sunk today!

On the ground we repulsed the enemys first attack on Iwo Jima - the defense modifiers gave us an enormous defense bonus!!

There are different rules for air attacks and air transport B5N! I lost some 40 transport yesterday from the enemy CAP
at Iwo, but I suspect the troops are getting through somehow. Matrix has to examine this as well.

Our strength on Iwo is still going up!
Andy will need a lot of troops to suppress these forts....

It's still a bit annoying: Our battleships and cruisers that engaged the enemy carriers all had very high nigh naval combat ratings.
At 8000 yards they failed to hit the enemy carriers - but the enemy carriers with low night combat capabilities managed to hit our battleships
with 5" guns

We didn't manage to utilize our superior gunpower against the enemy cruisers at all.
It's truly difficult to get at the enemy carriers, that's for sure.

The Taiho will soon be ready for commerce raiding behind enemy lines. She only got moderate sys damage despite the 2 torpedo hits
she took. The best ships live the longest, that's easy to see!

I have to say Im real disappointed at that result too..a bit stunned.  2 battleships come across some carriers..at night..at just 8000 yards... and..not much happened. Damn.

But overall, good turn..things really worked out.

Well, at the risk of sounding like Ron.. in this game ( which is as good as a drug ), the only thing more botched than Air to air combat is Surface combat, and the only thing more botched than surface combat is ground combat...

Pity really...

Keep trying, and may the Taiho and the Yamato be alive at the end of the war...

IMHO the result isn't too unrealistic. Afterall, it was night, the carriers had good escorts AND superior speed.

Taffy 3 had horrible escorts and was slower than Kuritas force, and still only one cve got sunk. Then again, i've ravaged the mini KB (Hi Pauk ) with a light CL force. Granted, the mini KB didn't have much in the way of escorts. I also had magnificent luck that night. Every torpedo salvo the RN launched hit, sometimes with several torpedoes. The escorts were swept away and then the carriers got their pounding.

bah, phew and that... sooner or later you will run out of your infinite luck...go Herwin go!

PzB... it is kinda dissapointing, but i think the more important is your victory on Iwo Jima soil!
Keep continuing with reinforcing these islands - Andy want them at any cost. If you can place 200 K troops and supply them - then do it.

You can consider freeing your Militia divisions - they are on one 1/3 of their TOE but that makes them soooo cheap to buy and relase to Bonins. Since they are low experienced (i really must to say this but... Machiavelli in me forces me to do it) it wont be pitty if you loose them.

I think they can help defence even with such awful experience - two attacks and they will be on 50 exp (or more). You have few crack units there so i think that is a good to mix them with greenhorns (if you hestiate to risk your crack units)
