After my defeat against Chuck as Japanese, we both agreed to start a new game, but this time I’ll play with the good guys.

The scenario will be the same, number 157 (without the Soviet Navy), CHS AB’s extended map.

A few house rules, as max number of ships in ASW TF (6 ships), and max no. of planes equal to the afld size x 50. Only afld with 9 and 10 size will not observe this rule.
For other problems we’ll discuss eventually day by day.
So let’s go!

As answer to the US proposal to do a meeting to discuss the situation in the Pacific area, Japan launched a massive all-area attack against western military and civilian installation.

SS I-16 shot the first salvo of the war, hitting with one torpedo AVD McFarland, south of Pearl Harbor entrance. After this attack I-16 hit with 2 torp the liner Jagersfontein, heading to Honolulu harbour with hundreds of civilians on board. The ship sunk in less than one hour with a heavy loss of innocent lifes.
Less than one hour later 363 japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor base without any declaration of war!
When they left the US Pacific Fleet were aflame. All the 8 battleships have been badly damaged. West Virginia is bery badly damaged and she could sink in harbour. The others could be safe if Chuck won’t attack again.

In the rest of the Pacific Area, japanese landed in Kavieng, in Luzon (Lingayen, Tugueguarao, San Fernando and Aparri), Batan Is, in Malaya (Khota Bahru and Singora), in Manado (Celebes), Morotai (Moluccas), Brunei and Miri (Borneo), Madang and Aitape (New Guinea) and Guam.
Miri falled immediately. Same destiny for Batan Is.

See you tomorrow for an update and for a strategical briefing. I will think about it tonigh.

Looks like we're facing the same opponent. Similar first turn as in my game. It will be interesting to see how fast things will become different.

Looking forward to your strategical briefing.

Viel Glück!!

December 8th, 1941

Since this morning I’m thinking about my strategy to apply against Chuck. I took some decisions and I hope they are the finest. Only the time will give me an answer.

Cent Pac

The Battleship Row is in a bad shape. Here are the damage levels
West Virginia is 97/74/6
Nevada 81/56/6
Arizona 81/65/8
Oklahoma 73/4/4
Pennsylvania 72/51/8
Maryland 59/59/3
California 40/52/7
Tennessee 40/46/5

If Chuck will attack again West Virginia will probably sunk and maybe Nevada and Arizona will follow her. But in this case I hope to shot down a lot of enemy planes with good pilot on board.
Anyway I will keep in harbour all the BB until I’ll be sure that KB has left the area.
The only ship lost in PH during day one was the AP Jagersfontein and I think is a good result.

The main goal in Central Pacific is to reinforce Midway, Johnston, Canton I. and Christmas or Palmyra.
14. RCT will be transferred to Canton from Panama. For Midway I will send the 161 RCT from Seattle, together wit an Arty Rgt.
To reinforce Johnston I. and Christmas or Palmyra I will use other RCT when I will have enough PP to use. I want to keep 24. and 25. Division in PH to defend the main base in the Pacific until I’ll figure out what Chuck will do.

Enterprise and Yorktown will run south and then will move to Australia. Perhaps they will be useful to inflict some damages to the japs when they will attack SW Pac if KB will not be there.

Sout Pac

I will reinforce Suva and Pago Pago with 2. USMC Para Bn and 2. USMC Def Bn from San Diego.
That’s all by now. 

SW Pac

The 2. USMC Div will be transferred to Noumea. I want to keep this important base at all cost. Enterprise and Lex will help on this.

Australia

I orderd some important LCU to move to Darwin and Derby area. I’m intending to build up a strong defense line there to avoid any Japanese landing.

DEI

There is not too much to do there. When I will dispose PP I will move some LCU to Java, where I intend to establish the main resistance.
Force Z and other surface units will take base first in Soerabaya and then will move in Kendari. I will use those ships to attack small enemy invasion fleets.

Malaya

I’ve decided to move south all the LCU. First line will be established in Johore and the second and main line in Singapore. Meanwhile I’ll try to slow the enemy in Taiping.

Burma

I’m building a big airbase in the north. All the southern units will be withdrawn to Rangoon. Then they will move back to Akyab.

China

I don’t know yet what to do. I will wait for Chuck first moves.

DEI

Bad news today. CA Houston took 2 torp launched by a jap submarine near Samarinda. The damages are extensive. One ammo magazine is exploded. In the afternoon Kate from baby-KB hit the cruiser with 6-250 kg bombs. The ship capzised and sunk in less than one hour.

DD Stewart near Balikpapan, has been reached by one torpedo. Another torpedo missed CL Boise.
The Makassar Strait seems full of Japanese submarines.

On the ground Manado has been lost today. Also Kavieng, Aitape, Morotai, Madang, Brunei, Guam, Tugueguarao, Aparri, San Fernando, Lingayen and Kota Bahru have been occupied by the japs.

Kido Butai has not launched a second attack against Pearl. The Death Star seems heading towards Kwajalein.

Repulse reached safely Soerabaya, while PoW and other surface ships are one day away.

The only planes that scores some hits on enemy ships are the B-17s. That’s incredible. All the british aviation in Malaya is continuing missing the targets. Dutch aviation is by now useless. B-17s are hitting at least one merchant ship per turn.

With the conquest of Manado, Chuck places there Nells bombers that are already very effective against my escaping ships. 2 AK sunk today in the Celebes Sea.

Kido Butai smashed Johnston I. today. MSW in the port was hit by 2 bombs.

Japanese assaulted Hong Kong today. Fort reduced by 1, but the odds were 1:0 on my favour and the assault has been repulsed.

I have a very good news today. CA Houston didn’t sunk! The captain ordered to abandon the ship and the crew have done it. But after two hours the cruiser was still afloat, so the crew returned onboard and begun to move the ship towards Balikpapan. The cruiser arrived in port during the night between 8th and 9th. He’s not so badly damaged as I supposed: 52/24/14.

In fact this is what really happened. Combat report showed that Huston sunk but the ship was afloat in the yesterday’s turn. Chuck confirmed that he didn’t see the sinking of the Huston in his combat report. Finally today Houston arrived in Balikpapan. Great!

Anyway, there is a big problem. No Japanese ship has been sunk until today. Three days without an enemy ship sunk!

SW Pac

The japs arrived in Rabaul. A big TF shelled the city and the airfield, destroying 1 Wirraway.
Wewak is captured by jap troops, that landed there yesterday.

Malaya

As expected, Japanese begun to land in Kuantan. This is the logical next step for the invasion of Malaya. My air force took-off from Singapore and hit with two bombs the CL Kashii, leaving the area with the cruiser on fire.
Meanwhile the imperial army entered in an abandoned Alor Star.

Hong Kong

Trying to escape from the area, DM Thracian took 1 bomb south of Saigon.
I sent out all the PT that were based in the british colony to attack Takao and Pescadores but all the boat but two have been sunk without scoring a hit.

Philippines

DD John Ford leaved Manila directed to Palembang but encountered a big enemy convoy north of Brunei. The destroyer has been sunk by the escort.

Philippines

While my subs are trying to do more damage as possible on enemy merchant ships, (but only 1 AK hit with 1 torpedo), the japs begun to land in Jolo. This is a vital island of the area, with a size-4-afld.

South Pac

1 jap ML suddenly appeared in the Fiji waters. 12 Hudsons attacked him, with no result.

Indochina/Malaya

DD Peary, escaping from Manila received 1 torpedo launched by Kates based in Brunei.

DEI

CA Houston won the trophy of the unluckiness of the war. On his way from Balikpapan to Soerabaya the cruiser has been intercepted by an enemy submarine and was hit by two torpedoes! This time the cruiser had no chance to survive and Cpt Riker ordered the crew to abandon definitively the ship. The captain sunk with his lovely ship 30 minutes later.

Philippines

DD Peary sunk today north of Borneo, after being intercepted by a jap surface TF.
The undefended Jolo I. falled today. Another big airport is in Japanese hands.
Baguio fortress has been reduced to 0. In addition the base has been cut by more than 30K japs troops that came from Lingayen to Clark. I’m trying a withdraw from Baguio and an advance from Manila, but I think I will not have enough time.

Cent Pac

KB is east of Wake I., covering the assault on the atoll. Enterprise and Lexington can proceed to SW Pac without problems. They will do some haressement action against japs ships.

Wake surrendered today. 2’987 marines have been take as prisoners.

Malaya

The japs arrived in Georgetown and occupied the city, forcing my troops to retreat towards Johore. Same result in Kuantan.

Today was the turn of Kuching to surrender, but, most important, Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese forces: 9’855 brits soldiers have been captured.

On Luzon, Clark Field forces are holding their positions, even if the fort has been reduced to 2.

On the south, Sorong (Papua), is occupied.

My carriers are heading towards Pago-Pago. KB is disappeared. I really don’t know where she is. The last time was SW of Wake. I hope Chuck doesn’t send them to the SW Pac.

Philippines

Legaspi falled on the 15th, and so Naga as well.
Instead on the 16th my troops repulsed a jap assault in Baguio and in Clark Field. The problem is that I cannot retreat my troops from Baguio.

The japs started to land in Davao, on Mindanao I. on the 17th.
In Malaya the already abandoned Taiping is conquered by the enemy

On the 18th Prince of Wales received one bomb launched by a Nell based in Borneo. Boink. The Force Z is en route to Darwin. In Borneo Chuck has already two bases from which Nell are operating plus Manado. I think that The Force Z is in danger. I will move now the ships to Darwin and then, maybe to SW Pac.

Borneo

Finally some results from my subs. On the 19th 1 AO has been torpedoed with 1 torp by SS O19.

South Pac

On the 21st japs landed and occupied Tarawa.

Malaya

The japs are advancing south. Kuala Lumpur falled on the 21st,

Philippines

Cotabato, on Mindanao I., falled on the 22nd.

Chuck is advancing without strange moves by now. This will give me time to withdraw were necessary and to place some reinforcements on key places, like the Fijis and Pago-Pago.

By now I didn’t use PP to change HQ of dutch LCU, because I prefer to change those of US RCT on the west coast.

The Japanese expansion is continuing on a regular basis. On the 23rd Singkawiang and Nauru have been occupied.
Hollandia and Admiralty Is falled in japs hands on the 24th.

Meanwhile, the AO torpedoed on the 19th, sunk on the 24th.

Philippines

The defenders of Baguio surrendered instead of retreating to Clark!!
18’649 soldiers have been captured by the japs.

During this period I lost a lot of ship: 6 AK, 1 AP, 1 AD 1 PC, 1 MSW, 2 SS, while Chuck lost

Cent Pac

On the 28th a shock attack on Canton I. has been repulsed. On the 29th Chuck sent a SAG to shell the atoll with no great result, and the DD Mochizuki resulted damaged.
But on the 30th the japs landed and occupied Baker I.

Cina

I lost Sinyang on the 28th and my troops retreaded towards Honan.

Philippines

Clark falled on the 28th, forcing the garrison to retreat towards Bataan.

DEI

On the 29th Chuck occupied Tarakan and on the 30th Biak.
On the 31st AVD Sirius received one torpedo launched by one jap sub and sunk.

Malaya

The withdraw to Singapore has been completed. On the 29th the japs entered in Johore Bahru and now they have to cross the river.

Burma

Chuck ordered a para assault on Tavoy, while I’m evacuating the base. That’s a good move because he will not loose time marching through the jungle.

Some enemy TFs are approaching Ceram island. Air raids are increasing. Amboina will surely be the next target. Enemy NLFs landed and captured Boela, on the south and Namlea, on the north of Amboina.

Cent Pac

Canton I. falled today. The assault force of the japs is around 50, so if Chuck doesn’t reinforce the atoll, it will be easy to occupy it again.
The 14. ND 158 US RCT ARE already prepping in Panama City.

SW Pac

Rabaul is lost, but if Chuck won’t employ the KB in this area, I’ll try to inflict him a lot of losses. Force Z is approaching the area, and Enterprise and Lexington are already operating there.

As I said, jap landed in Amboina on the 3rd .

Philippines

The fort in Bataan has been reduced to 3, but with odds 0:1 on my favour the assault has been repulsed.

SW Pac

An Australian SAG is heading towards Lae and Buna area. I spotted an enemy convoy with probably some CA as escort, heading towards this area and I suppose Chuck intends to land in Buna or, probably in Lae. I’ll try to stop the invasion. At this purpose also the CVBG of Lexington, now south-east of Milne Bay, is sprinting north.

On the 18th Chuck occupied Sansapor, Cebu I. and Gardner I. (Cent Pac).
Finally some success for my planes. On the 19th dutch aircrafts based in Soerabaya hit with 1 torpedo CL Naka and set him on fire, and with 2 torpedoes CL Natori, leaving him badly damaged.
Also if they missed the primary targets (BBs), the result is not bad. Until now the Imperial Navy escaped from my air attacks.

The bad news, anyway, are coming from Luzon, where Bataan falled on the 19th: 31’348 allied soldiers have been taken prisoners.

Normal advance of Japan Empire.
On 25th Durmaguete I., in the Philippines, falled in enemy hands.
On the 26th the japs assaulted Singapore, reducing the fort to 6 but obtaining a 0:1 odds and taking 4’356 losses vs 4’545 on my side.

On the 28th Manila has been assaulted and the fort has been reduced to 0, but the odds of 1:0 on my favour stopped the attacker. The japs lost 2’408 men while I lost 1’478.

Also Lombok’s garrison hold the island against a shock attack on the 28th.
