You will need to keep those two AF's supressed as the CV airplanes don't have the legs to get back to the Home Islands. Hopefully, he has many of those planes going down with the ships.

My tally on KB has:
CV Shokaku, Bomb hits 9, Torpedo hits 2 (should sink)
CV Katsuragi, Bomb hits 9, Torpedo hits 3, (should sink)
CVL Ryuho, Bomb hits 8, Torpedo hits 2 (should sink)
CVL Chiyoda, Bomb hits 9, Tordepo hits 1 (crippled, at least)
CV Zuikaku, Bomb hits 12, Torpedo hits 7 (SUNK!!)
CV Taiho, Bomb hits 0, Torpedo hits 1
CVL Ibuki, Bomb hits 8, Torpedo hits 3 (should sink)

WELL DONE !!!

I can keep Iwo suppressed but Bonin is tough until I get Wake and Marcus hits lvl 4

Marcus is choca with carrier capable planes at the moment I need get them on carriers to free up the AF for the 4E beasts

I think the land battle for Iwo is going to be brutal seriously brutal how to take a mountainous lvl 9 fortified island with plenty of supplies

By the time this fight is over I expect my pilots to be aces as my carriers are going to have to use ground attacks

I have been doing some thinking

I will need to adjust my carrier load outs and missions now that KB is out of the picture

I have no real need for Dive bombers as the real threat is surface ships I need FB's and TBM's for level bombing

Now I will have when Saratoga arrives a fresh load of Hellcats as she carries 2 full replenishment groups that should be enough to bring all my hellcats up to strength allowing teh F4U1D's to revert to CAS.

Add to that the Hellcat NF's of which I have 4 Sqns deployed and about 5 Sqns of Marine Corsairs and the 5 Sqns of USN Corsairs and I will have more planes than berths so I may need to consider carefully how I end up deploying

SO I need to reconsider my deployments

What I am thinking of is taking 2 TG's and 1 Heavy and 2 Light Surface Gps and sending them to Iwo to keep it as suppressed as they are able

Meantime the entire fleet will turn round and deal with Wake while the 2nd wave is inbound

I am also considering using a 6 CVE Gp with Marine Corsairs in a pure CAS role

I would make a counterplan for PzB to send in the rest of of his surface fleet to try to prevent you from reinforcing your landings on Iwo. He will probably try to send what LCU's he can to reinforce regardless of the cost. He knows that if you take either of those islands the other will fall and then the Home Islands are subject to massive LBA attacks.

The attrition may be costly, but everything you can scrap up MUST be sent here to ensure victory.

With those many TF around Iwo and Bonin, does he walk his divisions to Iwo?

Else everything went extremely fine until now. Now reduce his supplies (he might have lots of supplies there, just calculate with 200000 points. He will use a lot of them to repair the airfields, but he still has enough to hold out for a long time.
DO you think you are able to prevent PzB from reinforcing?

I think your TFs have come off extraordinarily well for the destruction of KB -- thanks for the quick summary fo your causalties from a few days ago, but what would you say the comparable naval losses have been for you and PzB in the Iwo invasion? As it stands, if you can keep the AFs suppressed, that's pretty much it for his naval aircraft. He can still pack maybe one punch with his BBs, but whatever they can do to ravage an invasion force should quickly be eliminated -- if your luck holds, you can sink Yamato&co without any major losses to you AKs and LSTs.

Now that KB has been destroyed, are you in a position to interdict the Bonins? Keeping him from adding troop to those lvl 8/9 forts would be worth a lot -- speaking of which, does a fighter sweep target air transport of troops? if the naval blackade is effective, air is pretty much the only way for him to get more troops to the Bonins -- and with Japanese plane production at such high level,s I'm guessing he can move whole divisions.

What about ferrying troops by air into Marcus/Wake to hasten the end? I assume once the IJA garrisons surrender on those islands, the bulk of the invasion forces will be loading up for Iwo.

The many missions my fleet will have to accomplich can be listed as follow

1. Take Wake which will require CAS
2. Eliminate the cancer at Bonins
3. Keep Bonins Isolated by Sea
4. Keep Bonins Isolated by Air
5. Force IJN Surface TF's back
6. Escort convoys in
7. Begin CAS on Iwo

Actually thats a lot of tasks for my Carriers

I think I will wait for Saratoga and the 190 fresh Hellcats and Pilots to arrive (2 full replenishment groups on board) and then I will Sweep Bonin and send in all my planes in a massive strike to eliminate Yamato with KB out of the way I have a chance to go after them with some impunity.

After I have removed the surface threat I will leave 2 TF's to keep Iwo under supported by 4E from Marcus and a heavy surface group for protection.

Everything else will go off to finish off Wake via massive Bombardment and CAS.

That gives me a 2nd lvl 4 AF so another 150 B24's and escort

If Bonins are suppressed and Iwo then its just round robin bombard bombard bombard by air by sea and by land until the base falls - it will take time and men but it will fall eventually if I keep at it.

Are you able to keep LRCAP over iwo and bonin to prevent air reinforcement? It seems the simplest way to destroy his iwo garrison will be in the air (or at sea) before he reinforces - otherwise this will be a looooooooooong fight.

Good job on KB by the way.

Also, how many black widows have you got now? And are they all on night ops? You could use a few of them on LRCAP from Marcus as well as the Mustangs. They are also good at Naval attack, so plenty of options.

I have CAPED it but even if I shoot down 40+ transports a day he still gets troops through its dammed annoying

I Have 5 Sqns of Black Widows at Marcus so 80 planes but I need to stand them down at present as I have to many aircraft on the atoll as I am re organisng my carrier sqns Only recon and Mustangs are actually on flight duty at present until I can get some of the sqns backonto carriers.

Unfortunately when I offloaded some carrier sqns they all became disabled so its taking time

TG 71.1 Saratoga should arrive tommorrow and will start to top up my Hellcat Sqns,

Overall I am not going to be able to isolate Iwo totally but I will try

OK Guys a small screw up has caused me a few problems Saratoga Group has arrived but I messed up the Iowa Gp was set to retire  so its half way to Marcus and its fuel state is such that it needs to top of its tanks 1st

I have ordered Saratoga and my two TG's operatoing in the Iwo hex to rendevous 60 miles west of Iwo no choice as I refuse to leave 2 Carrier TF's in the base hex alone.

LRCAP is innefficient so more transports will get through but it will only be for a day or 2.

Saratoga has a full 25 ship screen so I willl detach some light ships to cover the Iwo hex from transports

Saratoga herself will need to move to marcus as she has 180 a/c aboard and cannot fly Ops (108 Hellcats in CVR Sqns and 42 in her own fighter sqn and VF17's 36 F4U1D's (navy)

Should be enough to top up all my sqns

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/18/45

OK apart from my little screw up with Iowa this worked out ok

Lightest day of losses for a while and I have 260 fresh fighters to throw into the fight !!!!

Time to swith the axis of advance

I am prepping 11th Airborne for a mass landing on Andaman Islands 1 full Bde carried by C46's will land in about a week after that I will send a large multinational force to retake India - the fighting off of Iwo has to have drained him dry of ships and planes making an invasion covered by CVE's much more practical

Andy

What about updating us with what is going on in Miri with the 3 USMC??
PzB seems to be trying to make taking that place difficult and slowly wear down that division with daily air attacks.

This is amazing - great work. I've been away for a week and just read the last 100 posts.
I have to admit though that I had visions of your first Mariannas invasion repeating - glad to see the complete opposite And KB finally finished as well....

Thanks but the job is half done

I cannot go near the Iwo hex because my heavies are replenishing and his are based at Bonin and until I neutralise Bonin he comes and goes as he pleases.

My Carriers are picking up damage and 3 should really be sent to the West Coast already.

My Fighters are exhausted and I am filling up sqns with 30xp pilots.

KB was an annoyance that should have been used deep against my LOC IMO but despite his losses PZB keep coming.

From 30,000 ish he is now up to 70,000 troops and that adjusted AV is terrifying I am honestly not sure how to take Iwo its going to be a tough nut.

Unfortunately total Air Superiorty is not yet mine so this is going to be tough I have decided I need to try and keep Iwo isolated but need to take Wake.

If I can take Wake I can base 200 Superforts there and start pounding.

p.s. I have been exceptionally lucky so far

Something I would say my AA has saved lots of ships you must make plenty of AE's and use them in 45 they are lifesavers

AS you say Wake is the most important step now, do you use your assetts to get Wake as fast as possible? You might want to bomb and shell it, then finish it off using all your firepower, including 4E bombers from Midway. You need Wake and you need it now, so do everything possible to get it.

Frank,

I agree this turn I ordered extensive Ground Attacks Bombardments and a Shock attack and I will continue with them for a few more days.

Once Wake is mine the rest will follow

I have ordered 3 Carriers to move SE towards Marcus with minimal escort 2 strong TG's have been ordered NE to try and get the BB and TF that is inbound to Iwo

Last point although I have landed 3 Divisions onto Iwo I 'may' send follow on forces elsewhere there is an old adage about not reinforcing faliure that springs to mind PZB has managed to reinforce heavily already but he must have bled his AF dry doing it much as I have.

A long grinding campaign at Iwo may well be what I am stuck with but perhaps its time to rethink before committing more forces perhaps Northern Japan is an option given how much he has stripped his forces especially as we are still moving forward.

Flexibility is my middle name after all.

I am going to ponder this for a few days.

I have killed KB, I have sank at least 20% of his surface ships, I have to have killed most of his trained pilots and planes, overall this campaign has bled both sides white - does that leave opportunities elsewhere.

Before I commit the 7 follow on Divions I need to consider my options a little more.

An interesting turn in which 2 CVL's were hit badly

The good news is Wake is falling more easily than anticipated perhaps supplies are low

BUT look at that AV at Iwo its growing steadily

I am going to sort out the cancer at Bonin tommorrow max effort strike !!!!

OK the good news Wake will fall soon

The better news my carriers reacting saved my bacon had my carriers not reacted those torrents of planes would have hit isolated TF's

The bad news I recieved 190 fresh Hellcats looks like 50% lost already

The Helldivers going for Wake cost me a decisive naval strike
