Btw: I'm planning to bring in a lot of heavy artilleryto Iwo and start bombarding the invaders back to the stone age!
Continued landings by LST will become suicide as well

Hi, PzB.

As always I had not much to say, just wanted to thank you for this most exciting AAR. Good luck with defending of Empire.

I am curious what is your general disposition of air units. I would like to know how many planes you directed towards Bonins (in % of your total airforce), and how much of your forces are in each other theatres? Just approximates, rounded to tens of percents, I don't want to make you stop everything and spending two days for counting :)

Also If you have a little free time for screenies - It would be nice of "remaining ships" screen - probably not much of them left?
Do you still have some convoys (normal economical duty: resources, oil and supply not related to Bonins) runing?

Hi Monter!

Will get you a screenie, still a few ships left, but most of them requires dock time.

Think there are 2 cv's - one in sinking condition, and one cve.
7 battleships: Yamato, Mutsu, Kirishima, Fuso, Yamashiro, Hyuga and Ise.
Have to check the number of ca's and cl's, 6-7 of each.

In regards to destroyers I guess there are some ca 40 left.

Subs is a positive thing: Must be having some 25 or so by now, but 10 are damaged.

Before the battle for the Bonins I had perhaps as many as 60% of my fighters, dive and torpedo bombers in China training.
Another 20% were in the Home Islands and on the Marianas. The remaining 20% were in the DEI, Burma and PI.

China and the PI are is quite central and allows me to shift air groups quickly. Takes 2 days to move them to the Bonins at most.
For now I'm keeping quite a few short legged Tony's in China and the PI as short range CAP fighters. Will soon upgrade to the Tony 100.
In addition I'm rebuilding damaged groups in the PI and moving them for training missions in China.

On Java we got some 30 bombers and 30 Tonys as well as search planes.
Another group of Frances bombers operates out of Kendari.
There are some 60-70 fighters at Rangoon as well.

The next important training mission will begin in april when I will move all groups that upgrade to the Shinden to training bases.

Looking forward to the match...one hour to and then it's beer+football time. Sweet :)
I can't help but suggest something regarding the squadrons bound to recive the Shinden. Maybe you souldn't put them away for training. The two reasons are:
1. You'll be needing every fighter you can gat your hands on in mid '45.
2. Shinden has proven in combat against Hellcat, and even Corsair to be superior even when flown by rookie pilots (<50exp!)
My view on his is just do the standard rotation for training and don't fear to put them in combat the day the leave factory. Fancy paintjobs are now a thing of the past
Remeber when you recived George earlier then expected and then kept the few elite daitais you had hidden only to be dissapointed with their performance? No training, just put the guys in the planes and let their superspeed do the rest. It's been working for the Allies the whole war, it's our turn to have some fun!

great work PzB! Im sure that many people will be sad when this epic struggle come to the end....

i's sure that you know this could be the last opportunity to reinforce Iwo - not many of your ships survived and Andy will be back in numbers! Do everything you can at the moment and throw all you can have now....you have chance now, but next time all your assests wont be enough i'm afraid....

You may be right Honda, but I would like to test trained vs untrained Shinden and experience the
difference for myself

Thx Grotius, we're far from beaten yet!

With more than 1000 AP Andy requires at least 4000 to get even vs the terrain modifier, and this is not
included the 9 forts. Unloading 30k supplies at Iwo right now and continue flying in 2 engineer regiments.
Need to repair battle damage in a hurry. I will also reinforce Bonin, who knows, maybe Andy decides to land
here instead

I agree with you Pauk, I'm not sure I can face Andy's fleet anymore. My ships require repairs.
Will post a list showing their status. The most important thing is to make the islands capable of defending themselves.
This way we can strike back with ac and hit Andy's flank with surface raiders. I feel that even with the loss of the KB,
we still have a fleet as long as we can repair the damaged vessels. Let's place as many mines as possible now, got an MLE
in place.

This was a quiet turn as Andy withdraws under bad weather, protecting his damaged ships.
We use the lull to prepare our defenses and unload supplies. Iwo Jima receives more troops and supplies.
The big armored division sails from the Okinawas.

The Shokaku is still at 89 flood. Another repair ship arrives tomorrow. I've emptied the harbour for all
but the damaged warships...which I really don't want to founder either.

Somehow the first 6 battleships fell out of the list, and there wasn't room for the last operational destroyer!
The Yamato is pumping out water with some 25 sys damage.
The Yamashiro is also pumping, some 35 sys damage.
The Mutsu and Kirishima bot got some 32-33 sys damage and are repairing in Japan.
The Hyuga and Ise are fully operational while the Fuso got some 30 sys damage, still pumping water.

My guesstimate from last post was quite correct, some 40 destroyers of which half are operational.
I count all boats with 20 and less sys damage as operational.

Of our 6 heavy cruisers, 3 are fully operational.
There are 7 light cruisers, including the 2 training cruisers. 5 of the cruisers are operational, including the one with 27 sys.

We have 30 subs, half of them are operational.

Just curious..what do you have your escort carrier (Yamashiro Maru) doing? I see it as the only ship listed in TF 92.

A few of the ships... the two CLs and the Taiho anyway..in the Bonins look in good enough shape to move to the HI.. with Andy temporarily moving back it might be a good time to move them home.

Just played the combat replay for the next turn!
A 100 Hellcats shot down and another carrier hit by 2 kamikaze.

Going to bed with a headache, so have to wait until tomorrow night for details

The Yamashiro Maru and an escort is making Andy's carriers react. I'm hoping to disperse his TFs and make them vulnerable.
The Taiho could move to Japan, but as you will see in my next post - 600 enemy ac attacked Bonin!! We got away relatively lightly,
only 500 ac torched in a2a combat....in exchance for 200 enemy ones!

Who will win this extreme war of attrition?
Japan can still call on 1800 fighters! Bring em on I say

I must say my good sir, you have done extremely well, fighting the Americans in 1945. This is my first AAR review and I have read some of your successes against Wobbly (at the beginning) but I prefer reading what is happening in 1945. This is so far the only game I have seen played into 1945 (nearly all are 1941 reads, which are good)

Considering that I am relatively new to WitP, I was wondering, are you producing anymore aircraft carriers or battleships? Or transports? In 1945, does Japanese carrier and battleship production come to a halt? I did read that you have constructed several brand new Japanese destroyers. So, I just wondered.

Although I have only battled against the A.I and not a Human opponent before, the only advice I can give you would be to literally "fight to the death", like I did against the Japanese A.I when I played the Allies a couple of years ago, fighting for Malaya. I cause alot of Japanese casualties just by holding the line, although in the end, it was a losing battle.

Sometimes, I find it is better to use up supplies and cause more damage than give the enemy an easy victory.

Anyway, Banzai and for the Emperor!

The best of luck, good sir!

Hi Jap Spirit, nice to have you onboard!

Both sides got a set list of ships that will be produced during the war.
It's possible to halt or acceleration their production runs as Japan, but you can't add new ships.

I got 15 more destroyers on delivery by the end of the war, but that's it...

Don't worry, we're not going to give the Allies any easy victories!
Just go and ask Andy!-)

Todays turn was really bloody, still we have another 1800 fighters that can be thrown into the fight.
Yet again I have moved out all shattered air groups from the Bonins and replaced them with fighters, bombers
and kamikaze ac! Let's see how much of his fleet Andy want to smash on our indestructible fortresses.

By another day or two I will expand Iwo to a size 5 AF. Andy can do this in 5 days anyway. Need more capacity.

Think we got off 'lightly' today!

96 Hellcats and 3 Hellcat 'Ns' - the night fighter model which Andy is using for LRCAP and sweeps.
Look at the score, Andy is still several thousand points behind. Thought he overtook us some months ago....

PzB,

I think he probably did but the fact that your plane losses have been so heavy to "run over" and switch into negative numbers, - 18,000something - is probably to blame.Still, this game isn't being decided on points so it matters little.

Think those negative numbers were caused by us running out of pilots. Andy didn't loose any points when that happened.
Those numbers have been negative for months, Andy 'lost' some points just a few weeks ago me thinks.

But as you say, not important. Can't see how Andy will get a 2-1 score in 13 months.

Had a talk with Andy - who's a bit frustrated by getting his strikes divided by the massed assembly of Jap transport TFs at the Bonins.
He should be happy for all the targets

I don't have that many convoys and most TFs consists of 1-3 transports and an escort.
Of course I hope to see the enemy strikes diverted. Time and again my massive CAP is swept by a single sweep while all my attempts to bomb
the enemy carriers are shot to pieces.

This has turned into a life and death struggle of attrition.
Told Andy that he shouldn't expect capturing the Bonins before defeating my navy and air force.
He has jumped the gun by invading before these goals have been achieved. Especially by placing his ships between the anvil of the Bonins and the
hammers of the Marianas and Home Islands.

Can certainly understand Andy's frustration at times, I feel it every day myself...guess that's to be expected in 1945 though

A short summary of todays events:
Maximum repeated enemy sweeps of Bonin followed up by massed SBD and TBD strikes. Losses amount to battleship Huyga and a cve plus 380 Jap and 190 US ac.
Enemy lost roughly 115 fighters including 50 Corsairs and Hellcats.

Wake finally fell!

I will replace my lost fighters on Iwo and prepare to take another wave of enemy strikes. Told Andy we got some 1500 frontline fighters left
Told you, I would NOT yield in this battle.

To the last barge! BANZAI!!

Ouch, the loss of 47 Corsairs is really going to rattle him. Kudos.

What is your production rate of top-range fighters like? If you can produce enough then even with low-skill pilots you might be able to prolong the fight for the Bonins beyond the 1500 plane barrier ( which shouldn't take Andy more than 5 or 6 days to whittle down).

Also, as far as the Ki-102a... Try sending them in, on their own, at 100 feet ( under Allied radar). I have had excellent results using Japanese twin-engined fighter-bombers as FlAK suppressors ( + skip bombers). They take losses but actually achieve more than they usually do. The key, however, is to make sure they don't go in with a massive raid at high altitude as this just attracts massive CAP.  I'm jsut saying this since I see you lost almost 40 in A2A today and thought you might find better results at lower altitude.

Producing some 600 Zekes pr month and 500 Franks. Got a 1000 George's, 500 Jacks and 500 Franks in the pools.
We are deploying an increasing number of rookie pilots to flesh our our depleted units. So we will not run out of cannon fodder anytime soon

The problem with low altitude attacks is that they don't work against an Uber CAP of 200+ enemy fighters...
I'm not using the Ki-102a's as bombers, but as fighters. Even high speed bombers like the Grace doesn't have any advantages over slooow seaplane ac
like the Jack. Everything is swept down.

will put up a strat map in the next post!

I have reinforced the Bonins again, let's see what Andy does tomorrow.
Will these horrible losses to his naval air arm discourage him?

Thankyou for the information, PzB! Anyway, you can tell from that map Japan is on the defensive. How many divisions do you currently host in The Philippines and Japanese India (......Japanese India has a nice ring to it......) and the rest of the DEI and Burma, if you don't mind me asking? Also, is there any chance you can put an end to Chiang Kai-Shek?

But apart from that, this has to be the first game I have seen where India has been fully taken and occupied by the Japanese!

But still, for the Emperor!

Banzai!

There are some 7-8 divisions in the PIs, another 3-4 in Formosa and 3-4 in the Okinawas. I've reduced Imperial presence in India due to more...pressing concerns in the East!-) Still, some 3-4 divisions in India and all bases there have 9 forts. Same with PI, Okinawas and Formosa.

We are too strong for Andy to defeat us in a quick campaign in these areas, guess that's why he's trying to get access to bases close to the Home Islands.
He didn't count on our brave Samurais defending the Bonins though

We got a mutual agreement that Japan won't occupy the rest of China. In return the Allies won't go onto the offensive there.
Ground combat had some flaws and already early on I didn't feel it was right to conquer all of China, even though it would have given us an auto victory,
There have been other games were India has been conquered, by I think this was the first AAR were it happened, caused some paranoia among the Allied fanboys

Just watched the combat replay from the next turn. Too tired and drunk to play it but I can give you a few teasers!
Andy concentrated his efforts on Bonin Jima! Our fleet ran away, but reacted to their attacks. Numerous enemy ships were hit by mines and sunk by our ships.
Our destroyers took a severe beating in the process, mainly because of the very long and protracted surface combats that left our ships without ammo and vulnerable
to the numerous enemy destroyers there. Still, out capital ships are mostly intact as clouds saved them from enemy bombers. We shoot down some 110 enemy ac for some 320 Japanese. Andy is not any closer to suppressing our defenses

The goodies!
A dozen enemy destroyers sunk, damaged or crippled
CL Vincennes reported sunk
USS Essex torpedoed by sub
Enemy CVE hit by 2 torps and destroyed in massive ammunition explotion

The Empire will prevail!

This turn was cruel and bloody! A quick count shows that Japan lost 20 destroyers, 1 cl (training cruiser)
and 2 ca's heavily damaged plus a vast number of patrol crafts and some transports and 1 submarine sunk (the one that torpedoed the cve at Marcus Island).

The US suffered as well: 1 cv torpedoed, 1 cve heavily damaged and left sinking after taking 2 torpedoes, 1 cl reported sunk (Vincennes at Marcus Island),
1 heavy cruiser mined, some 20 destroyers sunk or heavily damaged and several battleships with a lot of sys damage from coastal guns and multiple surface
combat engagement, 3 AO's mined, 1 AE mined, 1 DE torpedoed together with several landing and support craft.

Most of the Combined Fleet is now in need of repair, but I got the Taiho operational with some destroyers and is planning to send her behind the enemy lines to
hit Andy's supply lines. We still got a battle fleet, but I will not send them back into battle unless I have to as all have sys damage between 18 and 35.
Most of our cruisers except 1 are also out of action.

We're now depending more and more on our numerous subs and smaller TFs. I can't complain however, the losses inflicted upon the enemy is severe and I'm happy to
exchance ships at this rate in 1945! Our airfields in the Bonins have been replenished with new fighters, bombers and kamikaze units while more troops are being
flown in and unloaded from transports.

I've start wondering whether Andy will try to invade Bonin instead, but this cannot be so. He got 60-70k troops stuck in Iwo, has to finish this job first.
Anyway, I will continue reinforcing both islands, but Iwo the most

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/23/45

Don't think Andy expected a major minefield at Bonin..it cost him - a lot!

Night Surface Combat

I had a TF of destroyers with sys damage in their 20's at Bonin. Hoped to repulse small
enemy destroyer attacks. They met the full US battle fleet and were all sunk!

I had evacuated all my fleets, but one had react on and came back in the PM turn to phase
a dozen enemy destroyers in prolonged battle. After running out of ammo pretty early on almost
all myst destroyers were sunk and the 2 heavy cruisers received a heavy pummeling.

This was ugly, surface combat model..not at its best. Still, we savaged another dozen enemy
destroyers. Even the US must be running low by now.

Daytime Surface Battles

We lost another 10 destroyers in the day phase, so did Andy!
Must admit that the battles were strange. My only solution must be that TFs doesn't have
ammo for prolonged daylight battles and when they meet multiple enemy TFs they will be sunk
no matter how outnumbered and outmatched the opponents are!

This first battle was still not possible to understand. We outnumbered our opponents big time, but
that didn't help much. At long range our cruisers should have finished 3 enemy destroyers before they
could have done much damage.

Btw: Clouds protected Bonin from air attacks, but the sweeps were as efficient as ever. Incredible seldom that Marcus Island and the enemy
carriers are shut down by bad weather....

Also thought about that Japan gained more points for kills in 45, but couldn't find anything about this in the manual Rob!

Really strange.... few US destroyers crippled your Navy...hmph..phew!

I'm interested (as always) too about heavy industry status. How many HI points left? how many oil and resources left? It would be pitty that you get Shinden but no HI points in stocks....

Are you already start to fortify Home Islands, especially the bases in the clear terrain (i don't think that Andy will go for wooded, mountainous or even urban hex bases)?

And the last, do you think that bombardment of the enemy troops worth the supply costs? The good thing is bombardment aims the support troops mostly and Amph Corp HQs wont be able to support enemy troops but...
