I am brand new to Maximum Football - although I had significant experience developing plays in the old FBPro series. I have loaded the new Beta version and I am trying to learn how to create a formation and a play. My first question is:

How do I swap a player while creating a Formation?

Thanks,

Art

Swap a player? I'm not exactly sure what you mean but;

- if you want to change the formation positions on the field you need to do that when you first start the creation of the formation by selecting the appropriate options on the Creation Formation dialog.

- If you mean swapping personnel, you do that via the depth chart on the team screens.

ArtD, welcome to the forum.

Do you mean change a player, move players, put another position into the formation, or flip a play?

David,

I was attempting to follow the tutorial for creating Formations in the new Beta version of the game. I created a Formation and wanted to replace the default TEs with WRs ("Swapout Players" as note on Page 53 of the updated PDS 2.0 Manual).

I interpreted the wording in the tutorial as indicating that I could accomplish that task as I created the Formation. Perhaps my understanding is not correct. The Formation tutorial on Page 53 does not carry through to completion of the example formation, including instructions as to swapping out players, saving the formation, etc.

Perhaps I need more basic instruction than the updated Manual provides.

Thanks and regards,

Art

Swapping players is done on the formation creation dialog. When you start the process of creating a formation, you specify what players you want on the field. To have more receivers, you reduce the number of TE's you have on the field. The 'swapping' is done automatically.

Thanks
David

ArtD,

You have to select "1" TE/SB and "1" running back when you are prompted prior to placing players.

At this time, there must be one tight end "player" in the game, although he does not have to line up in the tight end position on the field.

David and "Moderator",

Thanks for the additional replies and info.

I worked a little bit more with the Play Development System, but I must stop at this time. I really don't understand the system at all at this point. Perhaps when I have enough time to just play around with the commands, I'll begin to understand the process. It does not seem at all intuitive to me at this time - which I find surprising, considering that I created over a hundred plays and multiple formations back in the old FBPro days.

If you have written down detailed instructions and detailed examples, I would certainly appreciate having access to them. Otherwise, I'll try again later and probably ask more questions.

Regards,

Art

Art,

I'll have base formations in the Playmaker Tools that I am working on.  Then you will be able to select the formation.

I used FBPro, and I believe Maximum-Football is pretty intuitive.  Some things are different, but it is powerful and pretty straightforward.

If you have specific questions, I am sure we can answer them.

Hello "Marauders"

Thanks for your reply. You refer to "Playmaker Tools" as a location in which you keep formations. Please forgive my continued ignorance, but where is that location? Is that a set of folders and files you created as a location to store plays? In the new system, plays and formations are created within the game, rather than as utilities. when I look at the file structures in the Plays Folder, I see formation files, play files and playbooks.

I feel like I am coming into this game without adequate fore-knowledge of what has previously transpired and without knowing any of the "tricks of the trade".

I bought the game primarily to spend what time I can devote to team development and play development. I expect to find significant enjoyment in doing both as I become familiar with how the tools can be used. I am partial to the college game in general, the SEC in particular, and Alabama most particularly, so I'll be concentrating on college style plays.

Right now, I am just trying to find my way around the game and the tools available with which to become creative - with not a lot of time at present to devote to those activities.

I have created and saved a formation. My next step is to create, save, and test-run a run play and a pass play just to learn how to use the tools. My first attempts ended in frustration.

Again, I would benefit from a step-by-step tutorial which takes me completely through the creation of a complex play and utilizes the tools, including such steps as removing movements, etc.

Regards,

Art

The Playmaker Tools are just predifined formations, pass routes, and base plays that will allow the quick creation of plays.  By having one set of base formations, Maximum-Football will no longer have to look through eight versions of the same formation created by different playbook authors in their playbooks.  The updated default playbooks, my playbooks, and nmleagues playbooks will all use these in the future.

There is a hold up because of the new depth charts, but I will try to get the Playmake Tools out as soon as I can.

There is really no need to know tricks as such.  David has made creating plays pretty easy when compared to some of the football games I have played.  The best thing to do is try to make plays as test plays and use as many of the tools as you can.  You should be able to pick it up rather quickly.

nmleague and Old Coach have good insight about the college game, as do other community members.

Ouch!  What have you done, and what do you want to complete?

David posted a video of some things.  It is hard to know what the mouse clicks are.

To remove a movement.  Right click on a player to highlight him.  Then go up to the top menu and click on the remove logic point icon.  It will take away the last movement point each time you click on it.

What I plan on doing is creating a set of tutorial 'getting started' videos.

However, as I'm making some changes to the way the PDS works (breaking up player positions into more defined tags as one example), I'm going to wait until that work is finished before creating those.

The videos will have voice over as well as some further 'highlights' to indicate mouse clicks etc...

Hopefully, that will make the PDS a bit easier to use.

Someone made this analogy once. I'm not sure it's 100% accurate, but it was made to emphasize their point. They basically looked at the PDS as compared to Adobe Photo Shop and the Madden play editor to Microsoft Paint. Both allow you to draw pictures, but one is considerably more able, but unfortunately not as easy to learn.

Again, that might be a stretch of an analogy, but it does get the point across.

When I saw the one you did, I thought that it may be a good idea to do more.  That sounds like a great idea.

That sounds about right, but I don't believe the PDS is as tough as Photo Shop to learn.

In my opinion, the new abilities added to the PDS since 1.0 have really made the PDS into one of the most powerful play editors in a computer game without adding too much to the complexity of learning it.  It does take some getting used to for those who have not had so much power in their hands.

David and "Marauders"

Thanks to you both for your interest and replies. Just for the record:

I am not a "Gamer" and I have no interest in arcade-style play. I am interested in football and only have limited time to devote to any football game. I have more interest than time.

I am 65+ years old with life-long passions for football (especially college), golf, and music (classical, jazz, 30s, 40s). I'm still employed but about to retire. I'm active in community affairs and on several non-profit local boards.

After developing my own football board game for my son and I to play in the 70s and 80s, I got into FBpro in it's early days. I made extensive use of the FBPro VPNFL files and I used Excel to create my own balanced leagues modeled after the SEC.

I own a 1st gen X-Box and several iterations of Madden and NCAA football - which I have enjoyed playing, even though the games emphasize arcade action over strategy. I play as close to the Coach Mode as game software permits. I play almost exclusively against the CPU - ocassionally against my son or son-in-law. I am not interested in on-line competition - I have a dial-up connection at home and no plans to upgrade.

I am from the Coach Bryant school - I prefer close, low-scoring, defensive games and I emphasize running over passing. As Coach Bryant once said, "When you pass, three outcomes are possible and two of them are bad".

I look forward to enjoying Maximum Football, both as a participant, and watching it grow and mature.

Regards,

Art
