Cats are smarter than dogs. They can usually fend for themselves. They know where their designated restroom area is. They love you, but on THEIR terms. They generally don't take up too much space in your bed if they decide to curl up at your feet.

Cats are natural hunters, great at recon. Dogs have to be trained to do this.

The downside: the cat has his or her own mind. Training is accepted at their convenience. Their fickleness is well-known. The cat has an ego, and there will be clashes. The cat does not recognize that you own him or her.

Conclusion: I can identify with the cat's MO more than I can a dog's.

But are you heavily into eating rare garden bird's? OR maybe even crapping in other people's flower beds?

I wanted a dog.

My wife hates pets.

So we compromised and got a cat.

Its not smarter than a dog though, its just that dogs have owners.

Cats have 'staff'...

Cat's merely require an experienced Sergeant.

Think of them as bright but respect of authority challenged Privates.

Any cat mis-behavior can be handled with a glass cleaner squirt bottle filled with water: Start young.

Still, you have to recognize that they are little killing machines and prone to go psychotic once in a while.

Still, they're easier to live with than women.

Dogs are cool, but they require your constant presence to be happy; most dog mis-behaviors center around this fact.

Cats are for girls.

Hah!! I have a cat sitting on my lap right now as I type. My cat is a macho cat, not some girly pet. I used to be a dog person but lived with several women that had cats. I learned to like cats. (Pretty much had to.) Turns out they are more reliable than the women. My cat doesn't s h i t on other peoples lawns, doesn't kill birds or slink around someone elses property knocking up other cats and creating kittens. He stays in the house, all the time, like all cats should. They stay healthier, happier, live longer and don't give cats a bad name. I still like dogs too, but can't have one where I live. Cats are cool. Pretty stupid sometimes, but cool.

I picked this up off the web. Every point is true:

Cats respect your personal space. They do not jump on you when they're obviously not welcome.
Cats come with built-in potty-training. You don't have to teach them to respect the carpet.. they just do.
Cats don't yowl at the moon, the doorbell, the sound of other cats, or the garage door opener.
Cats tend to keep their stank-ass breath out of your face.
Cats don't get all worked up if you leave them alone for a few days.
Cats don't take **** from people. They have strong personalities.
Cats are small enough to share the bed with, even if you've got somebody else there with you.

An addendum -- cats don't bark at odd hours, keeping both you and your neighbors awake.

One more item -- cats are capable of giving themselves their own baths.

KG...I love my cat but I gotta draw the line somewhere. He doesn't sleep with me. I think he prefers it that way too. He sleeps on my bed when I'm not in it, but when it's sack time he finds his own spot. He NEVER sticks his face in mine in the morning. He's smart and knows that would result in something unpleasant.

My cat may not take s h i t from other people but he takes s h i t from me. I'm the boss and he knows it. He does what I say. I may have to say it a half-dozen times but he eventually gets the message. (Until the next time, that is.)

He doesn't bark like a dog but he sure makes a hell of a lot of racket at night sometimes. Sounds like he's doing carpentry work or something. I have to get up and yell at him occasionally. He just slinks off, satisfied that he made me have to get up.

And yep, he knows where to crap and is very considerate about that. It's the damn hairballs and vomit that drive me nuts. My one wish is that he would throw up in the litter box instead of a new strategic spot every time.

My cat and I get along great. We're buddies and he's more like a dog than most think cats could be. I'm pretty realistic about my cat. He's as good as a dog but he sure isn't purrfect. (Sorry bout the pun, couldn't help myself.)

Cat meat is way too stringy and sinewy. Very greasy. Dog meat is much better, tastes kind of like chicken if you deep fry it in batter.

Erwin,

Cat's are 3x dumber than Dog's.  A cat can understand 50 word commands while a Dog can understand 150,

So long!!!

And obviously the cat fanboy here has never heard of a Ridgebacks. They are smarter and have more personality then an army of cats.

Plain wrong.

quote:

Cats come with built-in potty-training. You don't have to teach them to respect the carpet.. they just do.

Therefore they ruin the wallpapering and the couch by feeling the need for a nailjob.

quote:

Cats don't yowl at the moon, the doorbell, the sound of other cats, or the garage door opener.

They "meow" when you do not give them the food or attention they think they deserve.

quote:

Cats tend to keep their stank-ass breath out of your face.

A cat fart is 100 times worse then a dog fart. Feed your dog properly and it does not have a bad breath. It comes all down to the food. When you eat a basket of "****" your breath is bad too

quote:

Cats don't get all worked up if you leave them alone for a few days.

True, instead they work up your furniture and wallpapers.

quote:

Cats don't take **** from people. They have strong personalities.

Just like many dog races.

quote:

Cats are small enough to share the bed with, even if you've got somebody else there with you.

Only relevant for people that are into threesomes with a pet part
Also strongly depends on the size of the cat / dog.

quote:

An addendum -- cats don't bark at odd hours, keeping both you and your neighbors awake.

No, cats just keep you awake when they mate at odd hours. Ever heard that noise, sounds like somebody gets skinned with a blunt razor.

quote:

One more item -- cats are capable of giving themselves their own baths.

Which dogs do too. Or does your cats also shampoo itself when it "takes a bath"?

Notice that some of you fellas don't have your cats neutered. In the UK, nearly all responsible cat-owners have their cats neutered (male and female), unless they are kept specifically for breeding. It's because they are otherwise seriously randy, adding to the massive stray population. It also helps to neuter a cat, just to show it who's boss! If it still doesn't get the message, you still have eating it as a final option. The ultimate insult is, of course, to feed it to a dog.

I think you also need to distinguish between slinky cats and dog-like cats. I have a friend whose cat thinks it's a dog, and like being shot at with a little toy rubber-band gun, which it then attacks before bringing it back for another go. Can't get enough of it. Like a midget Labrador, with whiskers. Nice cat - no slinking!

Cats have two huge things going for them:

They can be properly cared for with a minimum amount of time spent on the job.

They are inexpensive to care for.

Stilll, I loves my dog Randy. He can sense my mood better than any human that I've ever crossed paths with. For instance, he knows not to come in my office when I'm working, so he sits just outside with his paused crossed and his chin resting atop them. If I turn around and glance his way, he'll wag his tail. If we make eye contact his tail will wag more vigorously. And if I smile at him, well, all sixty pounds of him lands in my lap. That's him off to the left, BTW.

Some people love dogs, some love cats. I grew up with German Sheppards (love them too).

But now days, I have cats (between my wife and my kids we have 5, four of which we rescued from the animal shelter on their last day before being put to sleep). All are house cats, neutered and de-clawed (sad story that - but necessary) and they never leave the house - out where I live they would be torn to shredds by coyotes very quickly - as I have seen all too often.

I have to admit I have grown to love kittys, they are all diferent in personality and quite entertaining to watch, and very intelligent.

I am puzzled by the fact that my cats smell better than my kids, despite the somewhat better hygiene and personal habits of the latter.

Now, now
What about the Dogs of Hell: Cerebus.
A good point about cat IQ is as far as I remember they were not foolish enough to hang around while that whole Animal Farm thing went down.

I've own dogs all my life (2 rottweilers and a Jap Chen/pomeranian mix) and I can say dogs are way better than cats. My dogs have been loyal to the end. They would fight to the death for me but cats on the other hand couldn't be bothered.

Cats tast like chicken, that what I've heard from the Italians. They ate them in Rome, during the WWII when they had very little to eat.

Domestic cats are killing off the bird populations. I'd rather have wild birds. So, you could outlaw domestic cats I would not miss them.

How can a thread in General Discussion be off-topic?

Cats are for those who can't have a dog, for whatever reason.

An example of the superiority of dogs. Which one would look up at you still wagging his tail after you accidentally dropped a book on his head?

To use a military analogy. Which would you want covering your flank?
