Not a very good Pearl Harbor sstrike, hmm strange

Enterprise and Lexington are heading for a rendevous about 250 miles SW of Johnston, from which theyll basically sail around and wait to Join up with Saratoga

on my belief that DB will eventually send KB back to Japan or to help out in the Philippines i think i will have the carriers roam around, get some experience here and there and maybe do some good old raiding to gain more experience

i have absolutely no intention of coming to grips with KB unless i ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO, IE, an invasion of Hawaii, which while hes capable of doing i dont believe he will, but i will of course not operate on what i believe the enemies intentions arte but what he is actually capable of doing

FROM: ADMIRAL MARKY, CINCPAC
TO: UNITES STATES PACIFIC FLEET
DATE: 7 DECEMBER 1941

AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR- THIS IS NO DRILL

This morning the Japanese launched a surprise air attack on Pacific Fleet HQ in Pearl Harbor. at least 300 enemy aircraft have inflicted severe damage on air and naval forces in Hawaii. It is believed that he employed a maximum of six aircraft carriers to achieve this. All US Navy carriers are ordered to AVOID engaging the enemy carriers at all costs unless otherwise directed.

I wont give you a long peptalk gentleman...

We didnt want this war, we didnt start this war, but we are sure as hell gonna bring it back to them, and put an end to it as swiftly as we can.

From what i can tell you of the Japanese, they will give nor ask for quarter...

Therefore...

EXECUTE UNRESTRICTED WARFARE AGAINST JAPAN, DO NOT HESITATE, SHOW NO MERCY

CINC, Admiral Marky Commanding

Pearl Harbor Hawaii....

*knock knock*

Aide: Admiral Nimitz is here to see you sir.

Me: Send him right on in

Nimitz: How are things going sir?

Me: Not good, and relax on the sir stuff buddy, how long has it been?

Nimitz: its been a while. I hear the japanese are hitting us all over the Pacific.

Me: Hmm, and then some. Guam, and Wake are already gone. And theres, hah, well lets just say theres been so many landing reports that they were even saying that the japs were walking onto Waikiki a couple hours ago. Not true of course but everyone is goin BONKERS out there buddy. And we got at LEAST 4 carriers somewhere northwest of us roamin around blowin everything outta the water, or looking to.

Nimitz: What about Enterprise and Lexington?

Me: theyre heading southwest away from Pearl, theyll join up under Halsey and then theyll join up with Sara when she gets out there.

Nimitz: What else we got?

Me: In the area? Well Chet just look out that window...

*Nimitz looks out the window and seas smoke and fires stuill burning*

Nimitz: Hmm, how bad?

Me: Currently its not that bad, yes the battlewagons, or as you know how i like to call em battlebarges, could be far worse for the wear. Of course things could get even worse today or probably tomorrow if the japs decide to hang around and cause more trouble

Nimitz: What have we got to stop em from doin that?

Me: Pretty much zip old buddy. They smashed alotta planes out there, bombers fighters PBYs you name it they, torched it. And theres been sub sightings all over the place, we even got a report from the Ward that she sank a "midget sub" or somethin right near the harbor entrance. One of our guys said it was probably his imagination since the CO of the Wards new at the job.

Nimitz: Buit you dont believe it?

Me: No, not at all. If one of our Destroyers reporting sighting, attacking AND sinking a jap sub then damnnit they did, green CO or not. We both know its better to be ovwercautious than to be underprepared.

*They both look at each other, then out the window*

Me: Bad choice of words... very bad...

Nimitz: Doesnt matter we both know what you mean and this wasnt your fault, you just got the job today. Which reminds me what are you planning to do with Kimmel and his staff?

Me: Im gonna do somethin with them, im sure as hell not gonna get rid of em. From what Kimmel told me he was totally blind. They didnt even get the "serious" war warning till over an hour after it started.

Nimitz: So whats your plan?

Me: WE, are going to keep em off balance and hold the line, and only go head to head in carriers when we absolutely have no choice, and meanwhile those pilots are gonna train their tails off!

Nimitz: And you want the subs to discard the prewar doctrine?

Me: Absolutely, Japan is an island nation just like britain and you know what those u-boats have been doin to them.

Nimitz: Indeed. And since im a submariner...

Me: Yep, theyre your boats, all of em, every single one.

Nimitz: good! Lets get to work.

Me: Thats the best plan ive heard all day buddy.

*Mid Pacific Ocean, On board USS Enterprise*

Messenger: Admiral, this message just came in urgent.

Halsey: Jesus Christ and General Jackson! Captain...

Captain: Sir?

Halsey: Can you believe this? they want us to head AWAY, from the enemy. 4 or 8 or 20 carriers or not dammnit you cant win a war by runnin away from the enemy. Goddammnit. Change course to 140 for the rendevous point with Lexington.

Captain: Aye aye sir. Helm, come to 140 and maintain speed.

Helm: Aye aye sir. Course is 140 Captain.

*Pac Fleet HQ*

Aide: Sirs, we have a sighting report of the Japanese carriers...

Marky and Nimitz: Where are they?

Aide: Theyre 120 miles northwest...

Marky: Heading?

Aide: Sir, theyre heading is roughly southeast...

*The 3 officers look at each other*

Nimitz: Theyre heading straight for us...

Marky: And they wotn be bringing Christmas presents...

Aide: No sir...

Marky: damnnit, if we only had SOMETHING to hit them with...

*marky looks out at the harbor, looking at the battleships, destroyers and submarines, then cruisers*

*Marky, thinking: Cruisers.....*

*Marky looks at Nimitz*

Marky: Chet i just had a wild idea, its crazy and its stupid, but its bold, and it JUST might work...*

Nimitz: Boss?

Marky: The cruisers and escorts arent in that bad a shape... What if we sent them along with ervery sub we got out there, we know where the japs are, and we know theyre heading...

Nimitz: You mean send them out with no aircover in a SURFACE ATTACK?

*Aides jaw drops*

Marky: Exactly!  Look at it this way boys, the japs are coming again, we know where they are and where theyre heading, and theyll be overconfident and arrogant, and we can still fight, not only that but their closest repair base is thousands iof miles away, and we are RIGHT HERE. If we can strike back at em and strike good and hard we might just get lucky, plus wirth our subs and whatever else we got could make the difference!

Marky: Lt. Ryan i see you shakin your head. What are your thoughts, as if i cant read em already?

LT Ryan: Well sir, it is crazy and bold, but it just might work.

Marky: Ballsy, STUPID but BALLSY!

Nimitz: sounds like a Halsey move to me...

Marky: Indeed. But what else can we do but sit around and wait for them to be droppin more ordnance on us?

*Nimitz and Ryan look at each other*

Nimitz: Agreed

Ryan: Agreed

Marky: All right gentleman... Lets decide what ships to send? Operation Ballsy is a GO!

Marky: Excellent.

LT Ryan: Tehyre ready to go, but for a question of whos in command...

Nimitz: Ill do it.

Marky: Hell no you wont, i know you wanna go, i wanna go too but i cant and neither can you so forget it.

Nimitz: Then who?

*marky thinks*

Marky: Presnall, hes a good officer.

Nimitz: What about Spruance?

Marky: To be brutally honest hes the same as you Chet, NOT expendable for lack of a better word

*Nimitz nods*

Marky: Well lets get the final preps underway gentleman...

Marky: Chet... ive been thinkin about Operation Ballsy...

Nimitz: And you wanna call it off?

Marky: Yeah, part of it anyway. Were not sendin the cruisers out. Theyre just gonna get blown outta the water and were gonna need to to screen the carriers and convoys, we cant go sending them out to death like that.

Nimitz: What about the PTs?

Marky: The PTs have a chance, theyre small enough and fast enough to do a good job of avoiding the japs fire, and they sure as hell cant get killed by torpedoes.

Nimitz: Indeed. So youre still sending them and the subs?

Marky: Yup, we gotta make some kind of attack to make em at least think twice about raiding Pearl at will. There will be another time. We cant let the raid cloud our judgement and make snap decisions like that. But at the same time we cant second guess ourselves in a critical moment.

Nimitz: Agreed

Marky: But lets see what we can cook up for the japs...

*San Diego, on board USS Saratoga*

XO: Sir, all departments report ready for sea in all respects

Capt: Excellent, we can finally put to sea, and see what theyve got in mind for us.

XO: Orders came through sir?

Capt: Indeed they did, indeed they did. Our orders are to sail for San Francisco, pick up additional escorts, potentially a convoy, and then either rendevous with Halsey and the Enterprise or to sail to Pearl.

XO: Hmm, somewhat... confusing

Capt: Indeed, but our orders say that the jap carriers that hit Pearl are still to the northwest of them and they appear to be getting ready for another run.

XO: Damn. If we could only get into this fight sir.

Capt: i know what ya meran XO, but our orders from CINCPAC say that we are to avoid engaging the enemy carriers at all costs, "unless otherwise directed"

XO: So presumably if the japs invade Hawaii well try and stop em? But not Midway?

Capt: It would seem so

XO: Hmm. I long for the day when we can launch a full deckload against those jap carriers sir...

Capt: As do i XO, as do i....

*Singapore, on board HMS Prince Of Wales*

XO: Captain? New orders just came in sir.

*Captain reads*

Capt: Bloody hell.

XO: Sir?

Capt: Were being ordered out of the area. Back to Colombo.

XO: Damn. Why?

Capt: They dont want us in this area, they feel its too dangerous to be opertating in an area dominated by enemy ships and planes. And they feel that in this situation wed do more harm than good by staying. Because, they say, Malaya will fall.

XO: But sir no capital ship has eveer been sunk underway at sea by aircraft. Not even Bismarck sir.

Capt: Indeed but those are the orders of his Majesty.

XO: Bloody hell sir. I mean, were in good shape and we can fight, it just doesnt feel right sir.

Capt: Indeed, it doesnt. I dont like this either XO, but there will be another day to fight. We must live today so we can fight tomorrow.

*The 2 officers look at each other*

Capt: I just hope that theyre cooking up something good for the enemy...

*PacFleet HQ, Pearl Harbor*

*LT Ryan walks in*

Ryan: Good morning sirs. we have a few reports for you, as well as a sighting report of the enemy carriers, they appear to be about 20 miles southwest of us, heading west. Theyre also about 180 miles northeast of Johnston...

*Nimitz and Marky look at each other*

Nimitz: The carriers. Do you think they know?

Marky: Maybe, but it could be coincidence. All the same lets let Halsey know theyre not far off and he should haul ass outta there.

Ryan: Yes sir, i figured thats what youd say, so i already ordered them to full speed out of the area.

*Marky and Nimitz nod*

Marky: Well done Lieutenant.

Ryan: Thank you sir.

Marky: Now gentleman, what do you think their intentions are? Assuming theyre not looking for our carriers.

Nimitz: Well it depends. They might be heading for the south pacific, they could eventually head back to japan, they could be heading for the philippines, they could be heading anywhere.

Ryan: Oh sir, i know its not exactly my call, but i ordered Halsey to detach a few ships and send em nort, try and decoy the japs away from our carriers.  Its only a few ships, but the japs might go after em.

*Marky raises an eyebrow*

Marky: Big gamble Lieutenant.

Ryan: Yes sir.

Marky: Well gentleman all we can do is wait. Any good news?

Ryan: Most of the allied ships in the Phillippines and the DEI are well into their journeys to Australia. Some are stopping at Soerbaja to refuel, then theyll head southwest away from the area to Brisbane

Marky: What about the rest of the Pacific?

Ryan: No hard clues yet sir.

Nimitz: Im concerned about the south pacific, and the lines to australia.

Marky: Indeed. Any hard intel about that Lt?

Ryan: Im afraid not sir. Although it is reasonable to assume they might be cookin somethin up for us.

Marky: Hmmm. Well what do we have that can protect the lines to Australia?

Nimitz: Not much in the way of naval air or ground boss.

Ryan: We do have a few Marine Def Battalions sir, theres 2 i believe here at Pearl and another at Sanfrancisco.

Marky: Well lets get them ready to ship out.

Ryan: Yes sir.

NImitz: I assume youre going to concede Wake?

Marky: Yes, Wake is gone for now. But we do need to keep the lines to Australia open, and i think they might use all this chaos here for a rush and grab, kindof a naval blitzkrieg. Hell thats what id do. I only wish we had as many carriers as they did.

Nimitz: I agree with that, from what recon and patrols tell us they seem to be doing the same thing in the Phillippines.

Marky: So we need to hold onto Palmyra, Canton, Fiji, Noumea, and whatever else is along that line, that HAS to be safeguarded.

Nimitz: Agreed, what about the PI? or the DEI?

Marky: Lost cause Chet, lost cause. We cant hope to hold and defend them much less supply them that close to the home islands. Thats why every ship we got is hightailin it outta there. Were gonna keep our planes there as long as possible to cause attrition though. Maybe we can hurt em and keep em off balance. the thing is gentleman that we definitely have to pick our battles carefully. We cant let them force us into a fight, even for something we know we shouldnt lose.

Nimitz: So what do we do? How do we fight this war?

Marky: Very carefully Chet, very carefully...

*Fade to black*

Mid Pacific, southwest of Johnston Island, on board USS Enterprise*

Capt: Admiral, weve joined up with the Lexington and the Indianapolis

Halsey: Good, lets haul ass southeast

Capt: Aye sir

*Messenger walks in*

Messenger, Captain, Admiral, urgent mwessage from Pearl, it says the enemy carriers are northeast of us and appear to be heading west!

Capt: My god, do you think they know were here Admiral?

Halsey: They might. Captain change course to the south, flank speed, lets get the hell outta here before they spot us

Capt: Helm, come to 180 flank speed

Helm: Aye aye sir!

Halsey: If i only had a few more carriers...

*PacFleet HQ, Pearl Harbor, Office of CINCPAC, Adm Marky*

*knock knock*

Marky: Come!

Lt Ryan: You sent for me sir?

Marky: Yes i did Lieutenant. Have a seat if you like, this shouldnt take long

*the young Lt takes a seat, peering at the strategic map on the Admirals wall that matches the one in the War room*

Marky: You made a good call with the carriers today Lieutenant.

Ryan: Thank you sir, it seemed the smart thing to do.

Marky: Indeed, indeed. I have a job offer for you Lt...

Ryan: Sir?

Marky: Id like you to be permanently attached to this office, and to be Chief Intelligence And Operations officer to Adm Nimitz and myself. I looked in your file and you seem to have a knack for intel. Like myself you seem to like the prcoess that goes with it, and using what you got and dont got. Anyway whaddya say?

Ryan: Absolutely sir.

Marky: Excellent. It takes effect immeadiately, as does your new rank of Commander.

*Look of surprise on Ryan's face*

Ryan: Thank you sir, i wont let ya down.

Marky: i know ya wont, Lieu, hah, COMMANDER. But also, if you see something that dont look right, and you feel the right call is to have a bit of doubt, then dont hesitate, use your common sense like you did with the carriers. Id rather have an officer usin his head and makin a good call than worrying about getting in trouble, ya know?

Ryan: Absolutely sir.

Marky: With that said, is there anything new?

Ryan: Quite a few things sir, some good some bad.

Marky: Lets have a look.

*they walk out into the war room and look at the strategic theater map*

Ryan: Well sir, ill start with the good news...

Saratoga is setting sail from Sanfrancisco tomorrow morning and she should be here in about 5 days. weve got 2 convoys formed up right here in Pealr with the 3rd and 4th Marine Deff Battalions, and theyll head out soon for Palmyra and Canton Islands within a few days. A few torpedo bombers managed to put a fish into what we believbe was the Haruna off Malaya, she was reported to be on fire. The Australian Navy is beginning to form up with what theyve got at and around Brisbane.

As for the bad news sir...

First, were picking up alot of traffic at Rabaul, Shortland, Guadalcanal, and Truk, as well as just west of Rabaul.

Marky: Hmmmmmm.....

Ryan: And weve also lost track of the enemy carriers...

Marky: Damn.

Ryan: Yes sir, im trying to start up a patrol net, from Pearl, Midway, Palmyra, Canton, Fiji and Johnston, but as you know we dont exactly have a surplus of Catalinas, and while we have quite a few B17s in and around Pearl and on the west coast...

Marky: tjheres only a few airfields at the moment that can support them...

Ryan: Yes sir, except Midway, i plan to shift some B17s there to help form the net, and then send the PBYs that are already there down to the South Pacific

Marky: Good

Ryan: the bad thing is untill we get definitive intel on where the enemy carriers are, Halsey is gonna keep runnin south at flank speed...

Marky: And eventually run outta fuel

Ryan: Yes sir.

*Marky sighs*

Marky: i wish we had more

RYan: Of what sir?

Marky: HMMF! EVERYTHING Commander. PBYs, boats, carriers.

Ryan: Yes sir, but well do our best.

Marky: Indeed, we just have to hope that our best will be enough....

*Fade to black*

*South Pacific Ocean, on board USS Enterprise*

Admiral Halsey stands on the bridge wing of the Enterprise, looking out at the Pacific

Halsey: I wish theyd tell me to end this goddamn cruise so we can get into the war and do SOMETHING. Im sick and tired of taking this south seas cruise while the japs are attacking all over the goddamn Pacific.

*Bridge*

Messenger: Captain, this message just came in from Pearl.

Capt: Maybe we finally get new orders and the Admiral will stop scowling so much. Hmmm..... Yes i think hell like this...

*Bridge wing*

Capt: Admiral?

Halsey: *sigh* More bad news Captain?

*Captain smiles*

Halsey: Dont just smile goddamnit tell me whats goin on

Capt: Sir we got new orders i think youre gonna like. CINCPAC is ordering us and Lexington back to Pearl at all possible speed to prepare for a coming operation...

Halsey: EXCELLENT. Finally we can get into the war.

Capt: Yes sir, i got a good feelin about this.

Halsey: Then lets get the old girl turned for Pearl on the double.

Capt: Aye aye sir.

*Captain strolls back onto the bridge*

As Enterprise turns to port towards Pearl Harbor, Halsey stares out at the Pacific in the direction of Tokyo...

Halsey: Im comin for you, you sunzabitches....

*Fade to black*

Messenger: Captain, more new orders came in

Capt: Hmm, ahh boy.

Capt: CINCPAC wants us to split up and escort 2 convoys to Palmyra and Canton, then return to Pearl for new orders.

Halsey: Hmm very well, change course.

Capt: Helm new course, come to 220.
