At Iwo this is what I should have done all the long get the AF's and pound and then invade I tried to be a little to cute for my own good !!!

p.s. 3rd USMC Div is at Singapore and in 80/95 so I dont expect it to need to long to be combat effective

Perhaps you can use Iwo and maybe even the DEI as training ground for your naval aircraft in the same way that PZB is training in China? Would that help -- or is the real underlying problem the number of airframes?

It might help - but not as much as you'd think.

Allies face a problem of diminishing returns: if you fly pilots to bomb rocks, they rack up missions, and once they get over 100, they start to get rotated out - including Chinese.

AFAIK - the Japanese don't face this problem. So, they can train a guy up to 80 with 100 missions, and not have to worry about him disappearing off the roster. i've noticed that Andy has had pretty good luck with pilot retention... in my games, i almost always had pilots rotate out by around 125 missions.

Also, it makes it a bit more difficult to complain about the problems of the game when you exploit the same foibles you want eliminated.

That's true. In my oldest PBEM (just hit 7 Dec 42) I have some pilots that have upwards of 280-300 missions under their belts. No sign of them rotating out....

Well actually they do rotate out, in the form of KIA or MIA.

An interesting turn PZB tried to hit me at Marcus with unescorted bombers......P51's met them and looks tlike the P51's had a field day...

Its a long way to retire with battledamage....

Prince William will probably sink she was already heavily damaged.

My raids on Iwo were a total success destroying a lot of aircraft and keeping the AF closed down.

BUT

PZB has a carrier operating East of Marcus - this is what KB should be doing IMO in 44 and 45 hitting allied LOC far easier to do a lot of damage at low cost and I know I have beenn nudged.

A convoy off of Borneo had its LRCAP socked in and paid the price 3rd Aus Div will arrive a little battered methinks

OK I sent in some Destroyers to hit Iwo and they did their job - Lardner takes a Kami but it was worth it.

I Have 2 Carrier TF's north of Borneo searching for Tankers and in support of a renewed sub offensive lets see how it goes.

Sigint says a Jap Inf Div is heading to SEA on tranports lets see if I can catch em.....Wake should hit lvl 5 tomorrow in which case B29's will start to support the attack on Iwo

Could you order the heavies to hit Camranh Bay port to slow down the unloading of troops and catch more of them in the ships?

Good Hunting!

Good idea !!!!

OK a plan I have 4 Divs combat loaded at Singapore heading to SEA I have a choice of 3 landing zones a really deep hook (BLACK), a middling deep hook (YELLOW) and a short hook (GREEN) - any of the three are possible but not sure which one to adopt

I have a further 4 Divs at Singers ready to reinforce North or to hook again

If you go too deep it might provoke a response from China - and 4 divisions ain't gonna hold. Would be nice to cut the supply and reinforcements from that region, but you'd be limited to taking a base and throwing up forts ASAP.

If he's sending reinforcements across the water that might be a good sign that he's unwilling to commit CEA troops to the region. If y'all have an agreement on this then definitely go deep. That's what the Allies are good at in this stage of the war...

A landing at Camranh Bay would like like a good prospect. With the mainland army coming in from Bangkok, you'll have pretty much cut the main lines into that pocket of bases to the west of Saigon. Camranh Bay is isolated enough from everything else that it should take a long time for reinforcements to reach it (except by air). Your air force should be able to have a field day on it and anything nearby. Anything further north than CRB though runs the risk of being cut off.

I'm assuming your main army is just going to try and blow down the rail line from Bangkok under cover of heavy air attacks and its own large force?

Aye pretty much Medck 1st Aus Army trys to take Bankonk while the US Forces land in SEA.

To be honest after my mistakes on the Iwo offensive I am minded to play this one a little slow and go for a short hook into either of the Green Bases probably the more northern road bound one and support them with massed Parachute landings by my 4 Parachute Bdes further inland.

That could allow me to isolate that little group of bases in a single day.

Especially if supported by a deep Para raid onto Hue.

I am almost thinking of taking my example from MacArthur lots of little hooks rather than one audacious big one.

I have 8 US Divs incl 2 Marine Divs and 1 Aus Div at Singapore.

Thats enough for three shallow hooks in strength all backed by overwhelming airpower.

have you been reconning the area? Any idea what the opposition you face is? You want to be able to overwhelm him -- I'd suggest that your para drops on the surrounding hexes could isolate a garrion (say CamRahn Bay) as youhit it with 3x or 4x the AP. That should force a surrender quickly with no route to retreat.

Hmmm good point I forgot about the vietnamese Divisons hmmmmm

I have been reconning and his garrisons are modest I am nervous about going so deep simply because I have been burned by going deep recently and my carrier's are in need a training another hard battle may be a step to far....

Given how you have gone for deep thrusts before that is probably what PzB would expect, especially as you have AC TFs outside CRB right now - so go for the short hook into the green zone. Then when his reinforcements rush to contain you go for Saigon or similar and cut off another chunk of his army.
As for your paras have you considered an airborne assault on Krung Thep? This would protect the flank of the Oz advance - any attempt at a relief by Burma Area units would have to shock attack across rivers
And all the above under the LBA umbrella.
What intel have you on the numbers of units in those Thai bases between Saigin and Bangkok?
