I have just about compiled an updated version of the ships for use with CHS.
Every known bitmap with upgrades.

Surprisingly more than a few of fremens, Dixie, TomLabel and BigB's ships are very close to being in scale.

So this latest package will include detailed and scaled ships for both the Allies and Japan.
I'll try to post them to Spooky's this weekend.

Great!

CHS Allied air sides due soon (accurate markings and camo for Dec 1941-March 1942). Next iteration of Stock Allied air sides (Oct '43-?) on its heels.

And more great!

The files are uploaded and available here:

Allied Shils
Allied Sides
Japanese Shils
Japanese Sides

A proper page will be up in the next few days for them as well.

If you don't mind me pointing this out (or even if you do ), the pic for the London CLass CA in slot 424 is wrong. It should have X turret and the catapult replaced with more AA weapons.

*EDIT: Jap sides link fixed.

Go ahead and feel free to replace it.
The artwork is a community effort.

Probably the SLOWEST type of art to produce....lots of research necessary.

The Japanese sides link is broken. Thanks!

Im a little confused here...

Are these the standardized artwork sets made for CHS or a mix of other stuff?

I really like the consistency of the standardized project and was wondering if it could be updated to CHS...

As far as I'm aware these are the standardised CHS ships. I'm not sure exactly what ships are in the CHS packages, I think that several have been gathered from other sources, but any that aren't to scale are very close anyway. Any new ships I post on my site will be to scale though, but most will be camo'd as I prefer a bit of colour

Some oddball CHS originals are included.

I've tried to mellow some of them out so they aren't so noticeable.

Here's how I came up with this set.

I started with Subchasers original graphics package.
Overlaid the CHS base graphics.
Then I individually placed ships sides one at a time.
Reworked some of the original CHS graphics, and touched up and modified later arriving classes.

The US subs will be the most noticed.

Feel free to add your own favorites over what's available.
Everyone should have their own art packages personalized anyway.

Exactly, the game recognises differing artwork and improves your results if you're using a customised mixture

Darn, thought I was finished.

Had some specific requests to do as much as posible on CHS under the same conditions as the standard set. Under the circumstances, couldn't say no.

Since Japan is a no-brainer, I will at least complete the Japanese CHS set. All the standard art is valid, and about 90% of the added ships have already been done for prior iterations of CHS. Only about 8 or 9 are missing, and only a few need to be resized since they were done at the original 4 feet per pixel scale. Gamma and contrast need to be adjusted, but no problem. I guess about a week to complete. They should all look kinda like these: JWE

It's been a while since I logged on and a real need to praise the work of JWE and the team has certainly built up.

This is fantastic!

With some sheepishness I will admit that I am the klutz that did much of the additional artwork for CHS. They were shrunk down line drawings from some soft-copy ONI World War II recognition manuals – and they looked like it! One of the early CHS contributors tried to clean them up but the basic artwork was so poor that little could be done.

Many folks, including me, were upset with the poor quality of the artwork.

Many folks, including me, are ecstatic with the new standardized art work and I for one am ecstaticer with CHS being redone.

Thanks to all the contributors!

Having a little problem with the new artwork, which is likely caused by my installation error (I am no computer expert). When the Allied art came out a couple of weeks ago, I downloaded it, replaced the old artwork and everything worked fine. This weekend, I downloaded the revised Allied artwork and the new Japanese artwork and installed it. I am currently playing as Japan vs the AI. During the orders phase, everything is OK. The new artwork shows up (and looks great), but when I run the combat, the ships do not show up in the combat animations. The background is there and the script tells what is going on, but no ships or subs. If it is an air attack on ships, the planes are there, but not the ships. Any suggestions on what I did wrong or on a fix? Thanks.

That's because the Shils with the pink background vessels aren't in the right folders.

How do I get them in the right folder? I replaced the old JapShip_Back and JapShipShills_transp in the ART folder with the new ones. Was that not correct?

Hi Ducanlang this is not an art problem it is an obscure WITP bug that to my knowlege only 2 others as well as myself have had - it seems to happen when doing large art changes with the
ship art and will effect all installs

The Fix
1 if you have only 1 install of WITP do a complete copy of the folder to another Drive or location on original drive and rename this copy to anything you like
2 uninstall the original install
3 re-install WITP you do not have to patch this install just keep as a vanilla for future
if the problem happens again ( I have had it about 5 times now)
4 copy the copied install back to original location but do not rename back TO WITP
5 re run a combat sequence the ships should now appear

all other installs should also now work
I do not know why this happens or how it can effect all installs but it does

if you need further assist just PM or call out in this thread

Cobra Aus

Maybe Cobra's solution will help you out.
What he describes, I've never seen.

I always zip my files manually, to replace and overwrite, without creating new folders.
It's one of zips shortcomings.
The creation of new folders by zipping isn't always recognized as a path for some computer operating systems.
Hence, it's like the folder doesn't exist, because the OS can find it.

Ouch, I hate it when things break. Anyone else having similar problems? So far, I have had none, but who knows what evil lurks ...

The CHS update; got started later than I thought, but did collect all the pieces together. A bit of resizing to be done, and a few ships need construction. Anyway, here's the sample. Still should be done in a few days. JWE

This could be a security issue.

If you do a folder level replace your system may not recognize the new files as belonging to you.

You can check this by accessing thru the desktop. Go to the folders using Windows Explorer and see if you can open them. If not, try accessing the properties and see if you can turn on sharing.

hi guys a word of explanation before you go down the wrong path
the problem I have described did not happen unzipping a a set into the art dir
the missing ships in combat screens bug has always happen to me by simply copying bulk shils and sides from my own art folders into the shils and sides folders and overwriting and it only effects the shils the side art is ok
I have 11 installs for various reasons and when it happens the fault effects all 11 installs so to me something is happening in the registary
I have tried deleting all ship art out of folder and replacing- this will not work, fault persists
you have to re-install
JWE the files you are sending out are not at fault
I have asked tech support when it first happened and they had no Idea
I also looked a folder properties to see if folder was archived or read only - this did not mater
its one of those bugs that happen so rarely and is easy to fix

It is the start of another week of work, so no time to play around with game now. In the meantime, I put the original Japanese art files and the new Allied art files (but not the very latest ones with the slight revisions) back in the ART folder. When I ran a turn everything was fine. When I get time, I will try various combiantions of files until I hopefully get it to work with all new art, or figure out what file is causing me a problem. More than likely, something I did is the culprit (certainly my wife would assume that). Thanks for all the help.

Hi Guys I'm new to WitP, and came across this standardized art set which I must say is stunning , After I zipped the the new files into the relevent folders and restarted the game I also had the same problem as duncan, on checking the content of the original JapShip_Back and JapShipShill_Transp files to the new ones I noticed that the files JnSide0000.bmp and JnShill0000.bmp were missing, on copying the files from the original folders to the new Standardized art work folders, the problem was cured.

Nice find Les.

I've probably never had this problem because I don't delete the entire folder content.
Always overwrite it.

Never thought of that; I overwrite too. Okey dokey, I'll put a bogus '0000' in all subsequent folders; and I'll remember this little glitch. Thanks, Les.

Alright, the update. Grafiks done except for a couple odd-balls. Sample below. I'll post the following on the main forum and on El Cid's sub forum. This is all I need for closure.

The Type-1 landing ship is clearly the Matsu APD conversion, but I cannot find a suitable reference to a Type-ES LST. Is this the Type-Ha??

Also, what is the Taijo Torakku (AG); obviously a barge of some kind, but a description would be very nice.

The Choyo Maru is listed as an AP, with an old CHS grafik of a near seas ferry? I can find 2 Choyo’s, and both are cargo vessels. Wtfo??

Any help is vastly appreciated. A grafik is perfect; an official ijn designation is just as good. For the Choyo, any reference to a similar class member is fine; her builder and launch year is also good; if none of the above, then her operating company. For our Japanese members, you can send in either Kanji or Katakana.

I want every Japanese ship image to adequately reflect the vessel for which she is named. Call it due respect for a formidable adversary, now a fast friend. Responses can also be PM’d or sent to my email at jw.eldredge@cox.net Thank you.
