MF would not run on my old Lap Top {don't even ask how old it is} so I am getting a new one in a week with Windows Vista, which I wanted to try anyway. Is MF compatible with Windows Vista, or is it the other way around? If not, Bill Gates needs to get on board. Would you not agree?

Gary, thanks.  That was an interesting thread, and it sounds like we have an on-going issue here until David comes up with a solution.  Also, it sounds like MF is not the only game having issues.  Thanks again.

Wintervalley Software (David) and Matrix Games are actively working on a solution.

That is correct.  Many games are having problems either running or allowing patches to install.  It is a mess.

One of the problems is that Microsoft is a large company, and one hand doesn't know what the others are doing.  If there is a problem, customer service from one area often sends the customer to another area, which in turn send the customer to a third area.  That makes is difficult to resolve issues.

Vista was created to close the OS much more than it had been in the past.  Vista actually slows the system down, so it isn't really good for games, but the consumer is stuck with it nevertheless.

Hi.

As was mentioned by others, no public version will run on Vista. There is a private beta version that works (or so I believe anyway; the testing on vista has been limited to two machines so certainly not a broad test range).

Depending on where you go, you can get XP installed on your new machine if you specifically ask for it. The IT department in the store will take the laptop you just purchased, wipe off Vista, and install XP. There will be a charge for this as you may suspect. I don't know if you can 'trade' the Vista disk for XP, but I would doubt it. Microsoft may prohibit that.

If you're going to purchase a new laptop (with vista) to play the game, I would advice not going cheap on the system. Vista simply requires more powerful hardware than XP and if you get a lower end machine, there isn't going to be much in the way of system resources left over for the game.

Certainly get one with either an ATI or nVidia graphics card. Anything with an intel integrated graphics adaptor or one of those things will not have the ability to play the game. If you're asking the clerk for help, tell them you want to play 3D games with it and you need a 3D capable card.

I have an ACER Aspire 5100 model with Vista installed and the game runs reasonably well on it, although you have to turn down some of the player and shadow details for best performance. It was under $1000 Canadian.

(that's a UK site but I'd be extremely surprised if you couldn't get it in the US)

My wife and I both have Acers (the same model but I put XP on hers) and we have had no complaints. I would recommend an Acer brand.

If you plan to shop at Best Buy, ensure that any price check the clerk does is on the public internet based website, and not the private Best Buy intranet site. They have different listed prices:

But back to the topic of the game on vista;

I've been working to try and resolve the last few little items with the next release (none of which are vista related) so I hope to have that to you as soon as I can.

Thanks
David

Ive heard enough about Vista that I really want to make the switch, but it wont be until I can get a better PC. For now im ok with XP.

Most of my friends who have made the switch are happy with it, but have run into problems with various drivers for some hardware and a few software issues. But, it will get resolved eventually.

I have read about several issues with graphics card drivers.  That shouldn't be a problem with new prebuilt machines, but it could be with machines switching to Vista.

David, thanks for all the good advice, and yes, I was going for high-end!  I will let you know how I make out by the end of the month!
