In all honesty, I have a real problem with this. Having a gambling addiction is one thing, but even betting on your own team implies that an outsider COULD influence the game.

Do you keep in a faltering starter even if you're winning, and possibly take the risk of injury to that player, just because you have money riding on your team's performance?

I frankly don't care for Pete's spin -- "Because I loved my team." I admired him as a player, but this is too much. No amount of wiggling and spinning, at this point, is gonna help his cause, IMHO.

To my mind, the man's integrity is in the dumpster in perpetuity. It's sad, but I hold the perhaps old-fashioned view that the integrity of the game is more important than forgiving the damage done by any individual player, regardless of his accomplishments.

Does anyone disagree?

It is my understanding that he only bet on his team and only his team while "managing" -- not while playing. Therefore, I believe because of his "playing record" that he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Hmmm --- let me put it another way, BeachBoy. Would you want Pete Rose to coach your kids' Little League team? Think about it for a moment.

Pete Rose absolutely should not be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. His history of lying about this issue calls into question his honesty even when he makes a confession. First he said he didn't bet on baseball, then he said he bet on other baseball teams, and now he said he bet on his team but only to win. His on the field accomplishments have already been recognized by the Hall. I remember visiting the Hall of Fame and looking through the plaques of the greatest players. I remember sitting in that wing of the Hall and just soaking up these truly exceptional baseball players. Adding a liar who gambled on his own team then waited almost twenty years to admit it simply seems wrong.

Even with Rose's current confessions, I have always felt he belonged in the Hall. All of the issues with regards to his betting took place while managing the Reds, not as a player. I don't have a problem of MLB keeping him from working in baseball, but I do think he should still be in shrined.

The other thing to think about is do you give an addict or an acoholic a second chance? At first most of person who fall in either category will deny that they even have an problem. I think over time that Rose has finally come to terms with his issues.

Just my two cents.

Brings to mind on just the Yankee front: Ruth, Mantle, Martin, Strawberry, Gooden, Steve Howe etc...so answer to your question: yes there are second chances, this seems more the ethics side...perhaps its baseball feeling the old Balck Sox scandle...thats the question; would or did Mr. Weed* erhem I mean Mr. Rose "fix" the game to match his bet...

*rose is a weed was the chant at shea stadium after the buddy harrellson incident...

Incidently I admired Rose and the whole Big Red Machine...wow!!!
But if I look through my innocent childhood eyes...Man my hero just took a dumper on all I thought was sacred...
No Hall---and that goes for Bonds, Maguire, Palmeiro, and Canseco if any of these traitors make it in than the Hallowed HAll went Hollow...

Yes, you should give them a second chance BUT they also need to know there are consequences for their past actions. Even AA members are told to apologize to those they hurt as part of the tweklve step program. Some of them have a steep price to pay; look at the guy in the news that may go to jail after he apologized to a girl he date raped while they were in college (he was drunk at the time). There is no free ride; there is a reckoning due even for sins in the past. He should not be rewarded now for admitting to his gambling more openly--forgiven, yes, rewarded, no..

IMO, another way to look at it is that he is merely trying to atone now to increase his chances of getting into the Hall. I doubt he is sincere.

If they ever decide to let Shoeless Joe into the Hall, then sure, we can talk about Rose. In the meantime he made his bed and as much as it sucks not to have the hits leader in the Hall of Fame we need to remember it is HIS fault for the situation.
