225 bombers and fighters, quite the aerial armada. Still, given that he's lost about 120 over the past two days this massive armada may not be able to last as long as one would imagine if it went up against my forces. Still, if it were me I'd try to flatten Hilo field losses be damned. If he flattens it his loss rate will drop precipitantly, making up for the spike while he closes Hilo, while dancing around it is just eating him alive.

Its almost like he has a quota.... "Your mission should you choose to accept it is to lose 50 planes and pilots a day in the air over Hilo. Still, 5:1 exchange rates aren't to be sniffed at so for as long as this lasts I'll accept the trades. Unfortunately though my top ace died today. He had managed to score 26 kills in his trusty Zero but was downed by one of the enemy P-39s. Damn!!!

Japanese forces CAPTURE Cuttack [India] base !!!

Things are getting a little tough in India. I'm closing in on calcutta BUT my recon shows a total of 49 units present at that base. That is one HELL of a lot of firepower especially since I need to cross rivers to get into it unless I approach from the east ( a lengthy, lengthy detour). I think however that my only safe option is to approach from the east, pin the forces in the city down and then try to take things from there.

Judging from Jagdfluger's comments he thinks he has found a weak point... Hmm, let's see what those 1700 guns do when he tries to Shock Attack . Over the next few days if he is serious about mounting an attack I'll see more paras dropping on Harbin and other bases to check out my strength.

I don't think the range of the plane has anything to do with whether or not it will receive reinforcements. I always thought it just had to do with the presence of an Air HQ and/or sufficient supplies and had nothing to do with plane range. If it had to do with range then the Americans wouldn't be able to generate any new planes in PH since it is so far from any other major Allied base.

Which THEATRE HQ (I am not asking about Air HQ's as they don't have anything to do with air replacements) do you have in Hawaiis?

In your case ferry range is only thing that matters. Planes are created in other base and they are flying to their squadron. Seems that Me-109 don't have legs to do it.

Americans have CentPac on hand (which is Theatre HQ and not Air HQ) so they can create replacements.

Question: If the Allies disband a squadron does this squadron draw from the plane and pilot pool when it returns or does it magic planes and pilots out of thin air like scheduled reinforcement squadrons? If a disbanded squadron returns with planes and pilots NOT drawn from the pool then this, essentially, gives the Allies unlimited numbers of airframes and is a serious bug. Anyone know? According to my figures the Allies should be out of a number of types they are gleefully throwing into the fight at present.

AFAIK . both side adhere to the ame rules about pilot and plane pools. disbanded units arrive with zip and immediately draw whats needed from the pools before arriving on map. so no free luck for the allies.

and yup i believe monster to be correct about range matters from theatre HQ. tricky in the pacific for short legged planes to
get new units. allies have similar problems in south pacific with P30/40's at times.

Ah, but I have a plan. Within the next 4 or 5 days I'll base Me-264s in India and will pound Karachi until it breaks. Hyderabad is an irrelevance even though Jagdfluger doesn't realise it yet. Still, taking it was important since:
a) it allows me to do a left hook into Karachi without having to shock attack across a river and
b) it serves to focus the enemy attention elsewhere after I fly my Me-264s in non-stop from Tokyo and have them rest for a couple of days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Allies are eager for battle and rush towards the Japanese fleet. Morning finds the two fleets no more than 60 miles from eachother. The aerial exchanges are short and brutal leaving both sides broken by evening.

Day Air attack on TF at 15,2

Japanese aircraft
A6M2/Ki-65 Zeke x 23

Day Air attack on TF at 15,2

A6M2/Ki-65 Zeke x 23

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses

Fulmar: 4 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CVE Hosho
BB Hyuga
CVE Taiyo

14 Albacores lumber into range and, again, fail to secure any hits. Today was a lucky day for the IJN. With 18 torpedo-bombers making attack runs at least 1 or two hits are usually scored.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 14,2

Japanese aircraft
A6M2/Ki-65 Zeke x 16
B4Y1 Jean x 12
B5N2/Ki-47 Kate x 13

Martlet II/III : 3 destroyed
Seafire I/II: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships
CV Formidable
CL Ceres
CV Indomitable, Torpedo hits 1
DD Pakenham, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Despite the fact that over 20 of my 25 torpedo-bombers break through the enemy CAP only 10 survive to launch their torpedoes. It is enough though as the Indomitable takes a light hit and the Pakenham is gutted. Later in the day radio intercepts reveal the Pakenham to have sunk.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 14,2

Japanese aircraft
B4Y1 Jean x 8
B5N2/Ki-47 Kate x 10

Allied aircraft
Fulmar x 1
Martlet II/III x 7
Seafire I/II x 8
Sea Hurricane x 2

Japanese aircraft losses
B4Y1 Jean: 3 destroyed, 2 damaged
B5N2/Ki-47 Kate: 7 destroyed

Allied Ships
CV Indomitable
CV Formidable

Again the majority of the bombers break through the enemy CAP but founder on the reef of the enemy's FlAK. The rattled survivors are too distracted to secure any hits.

Still, by pulling the enemy's teeth ( decimating their Albacores ) and putting a fish into the Indomitable I have reduced the British ability to succesfully escort their shipping on its return voyage which was my aim all along.

This bombardment is occuring just north of Yangku. So long as the enemy holds at Yangku he will need to station significant forces in this hex, just north-east, in order to prevent me moving in and cutting off his supply production. The nice thing about this is that it gives me a great opportunity to attrit his supplies through continuous bombardment attacks while my bombers hit his resources and airfield ( seeking multiple supply hits). It has always been my intention to make Yangku the anvil on which I hammer and, eventually, break his forces.

Well it looks as though most of the Allied army in Burma has made it to Calcutta. Only 30 units are showing up on this picture but there are a total of 49 units present.... Calcutta is a problem since the onyl easy way in is to shock attack across a river but with a defensive AV of over 7200 such an attack really wouldn't be good for my mens' health right now. So, how to intimidate him into staying in Calcutta while I march around to the east and come in from that side? Hmm...

I have absolutely no idea what happened at Harbin. How could 0 Allied paratroops wipe out any full-strength Japanese units in a city with a half a division in defence?

I'm trying something a little different with my pictures. Could you tell me if you like it as I think it gets a lot more information re: the important incidents in a turn onto a single picture and saves space and posts... but it might be a bit confusing and take longer to do. If people don't like it I'll stop doing it.

I've started producing the Sonia again. My goal is to be able to replace all the Vals in my training squadrons with Sonias and free up my Vals for the carrier fleet. Since the Sonias use Nakajimas, an engine which most of my future plane types will NOT use, by producing Sonias I can make use of existing engine production to keep my training schools open. I am thinking of doing the same thing with Claudes and Nates although I may just stick with using the A6M2s for IJN training as they are much more versatile. The Nates use Mitsubishi engines which only my H8K2-Ls ( transport version of the Emily) will use but since I have 600 in my pool I probably have more than enough of those, especially when one adds in whatever Oscar Is I have hanging around.

I am getting more and more enthusiastic about the effect of the way this mod assigns engines by power and not actually by manufacturer such that by 1943 you are talking about needing almost no Mitsubishis but still need a few Nakajimas and then by 1944 the Nakajimas are pretty much also worthless. It forces Japan to invest much more in engines and less in airframes and will tend to keep the production runs of late-war fighters much lower than would otherwise be possible. The alternative can be seen in PzBs AAR where he can produce pretty much two engine types in great quantity and outfit most of his air force using those two engines.

Below you can see the manoeuvres around Delhi, Karachi and Calcutta. Delhi is completely surrounded and cut off, Karachi is almost there while Calcutta is going to take a bit longer and I expect him to counter-attack and retake Asansol before this is all over. Its going to be very damned tricky as I have to cover about three times as much ground as he does to be succesfull.

Bye bye battleship. Arizona joins her sisters at Neptune's dining table. In total then 13 Allied BBs and 1 Japanese BB have been sunk with the Royal Navy's 3 surviving BBs having made their escape to Aden albeit in heavily damaged states. So, it could have been better but one cannot argue with the destruction of 13 out of 48 Allied BBs by mid March 1942. This should make it significantly easier to kill their carriers when I finally catch them as the planes which usually waste their ordnance on the escorting BBs and are killed by the FlAK from these self-same BBs will now be more likely to attak the CVs themselves.

This paradrop just occurred to allow my tank elements to pass right through the base tomorrow without having to wait a day to re-organise and attack the base themselves.

Below you can see my plan for isolating Sakhalin. I am just going to cruise around the bases near it, capturing them all, posting small garrisons and, generally, making it a bit more difficult for the Allies to run supplies etc into Shikula.

My basic plan is to free up most of my troops from Delhi and send them to Karachi. Since the Allies have about three divisions there I should be able to overwhelm them if I can send 8 to 9 divisions with sufficient engineering support. One Karachi is taken I will move to Delhi ( approximately 30 ground units) and then onto Calcutta ( approximately 65 ground units). It looks like Jagdfluger has stripped Burma almost completely bare in order to reinforce India... a good move on his part sine I don't have the air cover in the region to sufficiently cover invasion convoys aimed at Burma.

Damn I just can't reliably predict his attacks because all he has to do is attack where he doesn't see an airplane symbol. This FOW breach is pathetic. I'm going to have to try to come up with a very different strategy for defending against his bomber offensives. What that strategy will be is still very much up in the air. How can I cover all my bases with sufficient fighters to stop attacks without letting his erfect intelligence warn him off? It is an almost impossible mission since I can't defeat his perfect knowledge of my dispositions and, even if I could, I just don't have the fighters to defend everything in sufficient strength to stop his raids cold. Damn !!!

This is quite encouraging as I am planning to bring roughly 3200 AV to Karachi myself and so should be able to take it over the course of 3 or 4 major assaults. I'll probably only get a 1:1 in the first attack ( aided by my Me-264s operating in the ground attack role) but with engineers to drop the fort levels I could start getting 2:1s soon enough. I should be ready to go at the end of the first week of April. India is slowing me down and it is going to take about a month more than I had wanted but, hell, I always wanted to draw his fleet into action around Noumea. It just looks like his fleet will be about 1 month stronger by the time I get there. A couple of early pre-emptive raids may be the way to go.

Interesting. An adjusted AV of 9,000 is going to be pretty tough to shift. Thankfully I have enough Me-264s available to run long-range raids over Delhi to reduce the supply levels. It'll take roughly 1,000 sorties by Me-264s to reduce the supply level to pretty much 0. Given that I find it difficult to base more than 40 bombers at any one base that means I will have to run sorties from 2 bases for a total of 2 weeks after Karachi falls. Bangkok and Singapore should do nicely. The Me-264 is great but the more I use it the more I realise its extreme supply requirements really limit its use. You can base a full daitai of G4Ms at a base for the same supply requirement as just 3 Me-264s and odds are that those 27 Bettys are going to achieve more than the Me-264s.

Nemo, I know that this mod is not historical, but I noticed that you employ 200th and 201st IJA Divisions in the attack on Delhi.

Did you add those divisions in your mod? Just asking because there never existed a '200th' Division in the IJA and 201st Division was formed on 2nd April 1945.

Kereguelen,

Correct. The backstory to the mod is that Japan was planning to go to war in mid-42 and its production schedule was oriented to that timeframe. This production schedule included an additional 4 infantry divisions and 1 tank division. At the start of the game the Japanese have these two divisions.

The pay-off for the Allies is that they get an additional two British divisions throughout the first half year of the war and the Americans also get additional paraborne and armoured troops later on.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

After giving my supply situation in Hawaii some thought - and no longer being able to replace my Mike and Zero losses due to supply constraints - I have flown my entire fleet of G5Ns and H6K2-Ls to Johnston Island and am flying resupply missions into Hilo. In addition I am loading 3 fast 3,000 ton transports, have a destroyer for escort and am going to use avoidant routing to get them to Hilo with the minimum of exposure. This is one reason why I'm flying these sweeps now, i want to cut the enemy fighter numbers down now so that when the transports arrive there will be too few fighters available to provide sufficient escorts for the inevitable bomber attacks on the transports.

OUCH! This hurt. I've been thinking about how to stop these bombing strikes in future and how to overcome the impossible task of covering every base with enough fighters to stop any raid cold. What I've decided is that I simply can't stop any individual raid but if I can spread my coverage enough I can inflict sufficient attritional losses to wear the enemy down and reduce the effectiveness of their attacks. A few key bases will still warrant 30 Mikes but most will make do with a dozen cannon-armed fighters.

Interestingly enough at the end of the day when I checked the Allied losses I found that they had lost 24 B-18s due to ops. I am taking this to mean that the merchant ship which sank off Hawaii following my strike was carrying these B-18s. Interesting! The ONLY use for those B-18s is a full-scale strike on Hilo as they just don't have the range for any more.

Now THAT really worked well. 97 bomb hits on enemy shipping in just one turn isn't something to be sniffed at. This should definitely lure the Allied CVs out to cover their remaining transports as they flee. 3 of my own CVEs and CVLs are lying in wait with the 42 fighters of the Yamato Daitai ( my best fighter unit ) and over 40 torpedo bombers. My Kate losses will be heavy but I expect my fighters to butcher their strikes and my Kates and Jeans to get a couple of torpedo hits on their carriers.

Well it looks like the Allies weren't evacuating cadres FROM Karachi. It looks like Jagdfluger is actually bringing MORE reinforcements in. This is the definition of a one way mission both for the troops and the shipping but I've got to admire the determination it shows.

My new defensive strategy claims its first victims... I don't have enough at any base to stop a strike but I have enough to cause significant attrition which, over time, should render the enemy bomber fleet impotent. I lost a lot of obsolete plane types and 9 front-line fighters but the loss of 27 enemy planes will slow them down a bit in the future.

This completes the capture of all Soviet bases surrounding Shikula. It will now be infinitely more difficult for the Allies to adequately protect any resupply fleet to Shikula. What this will also allow me to do is to reduce my defences at Toyohara from over 1300 AV to just 900 or so AV. The 400 AV thus freed will combine with an additional 4 division equivalents at Tokyo to form my Pacific Island Invasion Fleet. Overall that should give me some 1600 AV for offensive deployment and that should suffice to give him some serious reverses in the Pacific.

Looks like a lot of potential dead flak units in karachi . Might make your bombing of the troops a bit tougher though (as thats why he must have brought them in).

RE air defence strategy , I agree you cant cover everything but have you consiered LRCAP for bases 'close' to each other . IE in japan . To try and ambush any japanese strategic strikes ?. The big bonus is they wont trigger the daft airfield symbol ( no idea about air balance numbers though)

and as ever , good read , thanks !

Well I've been quite lax with the updates and a lot has happened. We're about 3 weeks ahead of where the AAR has reached at this stage.

Allied forces in India are bottled up in three fortified regions, Chinese forces tried to break out at Tsientsin with almost 10,000 AV of forces and were held by my forces and I've finally managed to scrape together a good offensive force again ( 5 Garrison Divisions, 1 Regular Division and 4 SNLF Brigades coming to a total of 2400 AV ) which I was going to hurl against Midway ( which had an adjusted defensive AV of about 1200- including Level 7 forts). I think I had a very good chance of taking Midway, especially since I would have had air supremacy over Midway BUT:

1. There was no end in sight to the sieges in India -  bloody stupid game design
2. the Soviet Union looked like it was about to enter play - I think I could have held it as I had about 6,000 AV committed to the defence of my 4 main border crossings.
3.  and quite importantly, play of the mod had shown up a number of significant bugs ( MiG-3s weren't entering Soviet service, P-51s couldn't be upgraded to, radars were messed up, Japanese raiding CVLs could only fly CAP, not attack missions etc).

So, I've conceded the game ( save file + password available to anyone who PMs me if they are interested in taking a look at the situation)and we're going to swap sides and replay.

At present I think that the mod needs some modification to Japanese production & resources in the name of balance and also requires some sort of house rule as regards the Soviets not becoming active until January 43 ( at least). Soviet entry into the war in early 1942 forces the Japanese to hold back and defend when they should be thrusting forward. As such it is hugely unbalancing even if the Soviets don't actually achieve much. Absent India I think that it would still be possible to exceed the historical front line trace in the Pacific even with the Soviet Union being involved but add in the absurd siege model and it is impossible for the Japanese to bring enough field forces back to deal with China and the Soviet Union whilst maintaining the pace of the Pacific Advance in the first half of 1942 ( following the capture of India).

What we're going to do is fix the biggest bugs and then swap sides and go again. After that we'll adjust towards balance. This is going to be my 2nd time playing as the Allies and I must admit I'm looking forward to being able to suffer massive losses without even noticing ;). To put it into perspective the final losses for both sides in our game were 7855 Allied and 5047 Japanese planes, 582 Allied and 159 Japanese ships and a score of circa 40,000 vs 16,000... which I think has got to be some sort of record for April 1942 ;)

Well, I haven't decided yet but probably I will try to cobble something together, particularly as this game should feature some serious bug fixes ( in the version in this AAR Japan couldn't produce any engines for its 1943 generation of fighters until 1944 and a few other similarly grievous errors- including a class of CVLs which couldn't actually fly attack missions ;) ).

Interestingly after we swapped passwords and had a look the following conclusions were reached:
1. China probably was within a month of being completely out of supply. If they could have broken out in that month they would have slaughtered me, if they couldn't then the Chinese would have died to a man just as per my plan. Jagdfluger thinks he could have broken out, I think my reinforcements would have gotten there in time. We'll nver know.

2. Delhi's supply was already in the red, Calcutta's wasn't much better and only Karachi was doing well - a situation which I was confident I could change given sufficient time --- especially since I had 2 more CVs and CVLs making for Karachi in order to prevent further resupply missions.

3. The Soviets didn't have a chance of breaching my border defences.

4. Australia had been stripped bare in order to defend Noumea. and the bases around it and when I say bare I mean bare. There was about 1000 AV to cover the whole of Oz.

5. US fighter pools were pretty much nonexistent. There were about a dozen fighters of all types in the pool. OUCH!

So, all in all, the balance was actually much, much better than I had thought and I'm quite encouraged. I think that the finalised version of this mod ( to be released after I play a few months as the Allies) will require less "balancing" than I had envisioned just a few days ago which is very encouraging.

US fighter pools in stock are awful, given the a2a over hilo and PH i am not suprised one bit that allies had a plane shortage (in stock this can continue into late 43 too).

China would have been interesting , although RHS china map confuses me terribly

Re soviets , is it hard coded the soviet land replacements and more importantly some ground units swop to corps and have a huge manpower advantage vis a vis divisions ? in early 45 ? otherwise the sovet ground forces are pretty rubbish. I also remember a thread about soviet supply being utterly inadequate in stock and SU will be unable to fight after about 2 months of war.

australia ? have the standard home defence divs been given a new theatre ? allowing them to leave the restricted command ? in stock i think the aussie units work well and the balance works out.

and thank you for the AAR , darn good fun read

Rob,

SU: Yeah I can do nothing about the hard-coded design in which Soviet units swap into Tank Corps in 1945.

Australia: This mod also features a greater allocation of political points so Jagdfluger was able to buy out the majority of his units and redeploy them to the front lines. Do I think this redeployment was a good idea? Not really BUT I believe in giving players the ability to make choices even if those coices are deleterious.

Sorry to hear its ending at least you wont need to do turn 1 again !!!

My only list of fix points from my time with the mod (as opposed to percieved balance or 'nemo'  factor allied upgrades !!!)

1. Supply at Karachi I would be interested in hearing how low it had gotten I would suspect allies were totally out or only had some because of your blockade 2,000 per day is very very low in 43 or 44 the allies will struggle to upgrade and keep operational forces even in India at that level.
2. Allied Radar issues that you are aware of.

(I still think if Russia is going to stay out of the fight until 43 that you need to give them a little offensive kick for 43 i.e. increased armour the 3 weak Bdes are poor and some copmbat engineer regts as they will be facing lvl 9 forts everywhere)

Other Issues from reading the AAR that I would be interested in hearing Jadg's views on.

I think the Me 264's are to early and China to easy to starve - China was a low priority in this game and you had hardly started resource bombing and yet China was out of supply already. I think you need to give the Chinese some supply generation that cannot be destroyed.

I still feel 100 ish zeroes that are deployed at start should be set to arrive in 1st three months

But the last two were my percieved balance issues so you may prefer to play the other game before deciding on a view on these.

I would like a version of the scenario once you have finished any tweaks as I may look for an opponent or an AI game as I do like the toys and the mod

Andy

Hi there Andy,

1. Karachi: From memory there were some 55,000 tons of supply at Karachi at game's end but much of that had come in in a couple of resupply convoys. In essence Karachi would have been very short of supply after being cut off IF those resupply convoys hadn't come in. OTOH that is exactly the result I was looking for. I believe that a port isolated from seaborne resupply SHOULD be low of supplies very quickly.

2. Allied AND Japanese radars. Yeah that's my big job at the moment. I need to figure out the quickest way to effect these radar fixes.

3. Soviet Union - Aye, giving them a bit more punch all due to arrive on 1st January 1943 may well make sense. I'll look into it.

4. China and resource bombing... Umm, I had destroyed almost 3,000 resource points in China. That's a very concentrated resource bombing campaign. Resource bombing was pretty much the only task most of my bomber force had throughout the game. I didn't highlight it much in the AAR but on most days 50 to 100 resource points in China were being hit. As to the Chinese getting unbombable supply- well that would only help them if they were forced back to the bases in which that unbombable supply would appear. Giving 9,000 or even 18,000 tons of unbombable supply per month just wouldn't make all that much difference if China was on the offensive since half or more of that supply would be lost in moving it to the front. If you double it again then it just ends up being massively unbalancing when the Chinese fall back onto their hinterland bases. Mainly though my issue is a philosophical one. I don't have "free supply" anywhere and I think the game is the better for it. Breaking that rule for China is a line I don't want to cross unless absolutely necessary.

5. Zeroes - Aye, the Allies cannot fight these Zeroes in the air in the first few months. It would just be a slaughter. OTOH if you can't fight them in the manner you are used to then perhaps it is time to fight them using unorthodox means? That's why I am so happy to play the Allies here. I have a few ideas of how to go about this as the Allies and would like to see if they bear any fruit. If they do then balance is preserved, if they don't then I need to look again.

So, the more I think about it the more I really need to AAR the Allied side of things in order to draw the operational and balance lessons out of the game. Once that's done I'll update and go to the final version.

I'm also glad to see you are still interested in the mod and trying another game. I think that if the two players involved were less ueber-aggressive than myself and Jagdfluger that the mod would play in an even more balanced fashion and yield an enjoyable game.

Jagdfluger has estimated that he should have the first turn back to me sometime on Tuesday so we'll see where he goes then. I may post a few initial thoughts on this new game later as I've thought of a few wrinkles to try things I haven't seen Allied players trying in any AAR so far.
