It's Rabaul, Interesting what it looks like now versus 60 years ago.

Yup, in this case, the "Volcano" would be a hint, even if you had no other clue.

Well I cheated a little, Started Google Maps and then started searching base names till I found a match. Only took me 3 tries. What's interesting is Google won't find Truk. You have to name a specific island to get the right area. Strange to think that as famous as Truk Lagoon is that Google thinks you are trying to spell Truck.

I think its interesting that the airfield is still there, but hasnt apparently been used since 1945. Facinating.

During the war, Rabaul had several airfields.  There is an international airport there today, but obviously all the airfields used during the war aren't needed anymore.

Yup,

Rabaul is correct.  It looks to me like that volcano pretty much took out the east side of the city/island when it erupted back in 1984.  What is amazing to me is how little the town is...it actually looks less populated now than it did in the first picture.

I did some reading on scuba diving in the area, and they said the ash from the volcanic eruption has covered many of the wrecks in the harbor.  It still has some that are supposedly very good dives though.

And yes, Chuuk is the spelling for Truk now.  I noticed the same thing when I was GEing some harbors also.
