I know there's already a huge thread about this subject...but I just want to know how people are using an 8-man playbook on a US field without having the "mandatory plays missing" message pop-up.

I make sure every team is using the 8-man playbook, Indoor rules;therefore, field is also used. In team creation I select outdoor stadiums and I'm good to go. Understand something...the indoor field is used in an outdoor environment. It is a 50x27 (i think) field but it will occupy the chosen stadium and be subject to weather.

It is not 8man ball on a traditional 100x53 field.

Look at defaultplays.dat
open that with Notepad and Teampos.dat

make sure you back your stuff up before you make any changes

also make sure you save the changed files also in case Dave makes changes to those files in an update.  When you make your punt play make sure you put the kicker in as the punter.  I'll explain better if you can't figure it out, right now I'm on my way out.

Tbird, any chance you could write up a "How To" for knuckleheads like me.

Ive been poking around in the game for an hour or so but am not having much luck with this.

Im just trying to get a punt for the 8 man roster outdoors.

This is not supported by Matrix Games so make sure you back some of your files up both original and the newly modified files. Incase Dave makes some changes that will rewrite these files.

Locate Teampos.dat and open it with Notepad

locate these and fill it in with positions, look at the punt11 to get a good idea of what to fill it in with
mine is blank for some off reason. Probably an update wiped out the [Punt8] but since I already had punt return and punt formation it probably didn't affect it much.

[PUNT8]

[PUNTRET8]

2:DL:DL
3:DL:DL
4:DL:DL
5:BL:BL
6:BL:BL
7:DL:DL
8:KR:KR
9:
10:
11:
12:

It's been a while but I think that will let you create both the Punt and Punt return formations

Locate defaultplays.dat and open it with Notepad

Now you gotta find the play id number and add it to number 2 and 3 for the punt return

[8]
2:
3:
4:250766
5:249136
6:239212
7:63895
[END]

you can finf the play id number if you go to utilities and go to playbook and edit playbook and selecting the play.

Hope that helps

Yep, thats fantastic....thanks. I was oh so close :-)

Does it work well in game for you?

Do you create a group in the playbook solely for 4th downs to make the team punt?

Yeah it works good

another thing I forgot to mention is to replace the punter with the kicker for all teams.  Or else you'll get some guy that will kick the ball to the far right.  It should let you do it without switching between human and computer owner.

I have field goals set to 55 yards cuz once in while if the ball bounces to the endzone the players run to the ball and stop close to it.  They just stand there running in place.  The teams automatically punt on 4th down so nothing special needs to be done.

Thanks. Another excuse to start another league :-)

The main drawback to Max Football is that there is so much to do, i spend more time creating and tinkering, than actually playing.

I did several things. Back everything up first.

First thing I did was export a profile for my 20 man roster and edit it to ensure it drafts Punters. At least so each team has 1 punter. Then went back in the game and imported it to each team. I also made sure in league rules, I chose either the 100yd US fields or a CFL field. In my case its the CFL field.

I then edited the [PUNT8] section of the TeamsPos.dat to look like the following:

[PUNT8]
1:CT:CT
2:P:P:K
3:OL:RG
4:OL:LG
5:OP1:RB:HB:WR:R3
6:OP2:RB:FB:WR:R4
7:WR:R1
8:WR:R2
9:
10:
11:
12:

5 thru 8 could probably be any type of player, 1 thru 4 are your o-line and punter. For whatever reason I always use a center, even though you dont have to, an o-lineman can snap the ball just fine.
For the punt return, its actually already there, but I changed to speed players as below

[PUNTRET8]
1:DL:DL
2:DL:DL
3:DL:DL
4:KR:KR
5:KR:KR
6:KR:KR
7:DB:DB
8:DB:DB
9:
10:
11:
12:

Now go into the PDS and create formation, go to Punt and even though it may say no info or no data, click done and you will still get the players on the field that you entered in the TeamsPos.dat.
Save the formation as whatever....I saved as 8manpunt

Do the same above to create a punt return formation by scrolling to puntreturn and doing the same.

Now, you should be able to load each of them when you go to create a play....scroll to Punt or Punt Return and your formations should be there....load, adjust to your liking and test them.
Save them as whatever, i just used the same name as the formations...you now would have a punt and punt return play.

Remember, if your team doesnt yet have a punter, whatever player punts during the playtest likely will shank it. Dont worry, when you assign a punter in the depth chart, he booms it as a punter should.

Open the max utilities and choose edit playbook. Click import play and scroll to punt....it should show your new play. write down the playid for the punt and punt return

go to your maxfb folder and open defaultplays.dat with notepad and you will see this

[8]
2:
3:
4:250766
5:249136
6:239212
7:63895
[END]

the 2: and 3: are punt and punt return. type in the playid numbers here to make your plays the defaults for 8 man

this should do it. its working fine for me. If im off on anything its due to poor memory :-)

let me know or maybe Tbird can correct me if i made a mistake.

Hey guys I got an off topic question about this.  The file Tbird indicates has the ability to put in 8 man Punt and Punt Return plays to an 8-man Outdoor Football league.  That is great to hear, but can this file also have any effect on substitutions?  I ask because I see the lines like "DL:DL".  Does this mean I could make an "Ironman" system and have "OL:DL" and let the game automatically keep Players playing both ways, or does this have nothing to do with Substituting?  I did find a way to make an Ironman system to work (mostly with Playbooks with an Indoor style league), but it doesn't work very well if an injury occurs and causes a substitution.

P.S.  I can't really test this out.  I only have Windows 98 SE and David has indicated that he will not support this OS anymore for Max Football.    Too bad, it could be a while before I can get a copy of Win2k or XP.

Unfortunately that decision isn't really mine to make. Microsoft doesn't support it anymore. The technologies they're forcing me to migrate to simply don't work on Win98. And if I stay with technology that does work with that OS then I can't support Windows Vista. And that, for good or bad, is the future. And it's not just microsoft either, companies that make graphics cards and other hardware devices that need drivers are dropping (or probably already have dropped) support for Win98 too.

Now all that said, I know the game does work on Win98 SE because others are using it. But in your particular situation, I just don't have enough information about your system to be able to diagnose the problem, and I'm not going to get any help from microsoft or the vendors that supply you with drivers. Short of you sending me your system so I can set it up to play the game, I am at a loss to be able to help you.

Coming soon there is going to be a very substantial change to the core technology of the game. It's going to take me a couple of months (at least) to make the update. Yet when it's finished, pretty much nobody will notice any of the work. Why? Because it's going to take me that long just to make the game work (and look) at least as good as it does now using this new stuff from microsoft. This is a microsoft mandated change. They're simply dropping support for technologies that don't work on Vista.

David, no problem.  I can understand your situation.  I have read and heard about Vista aswell, and if this is the future for Microsoft... well... I hope they make the OS cheaper because I can't keep up paying the money to buy the OS's and the computers to barly run Vista.  Vista looks impressive, but do I really need all that stuff for an OS if I just want to use the Paint program or Microsoft Word.  Just seems like it sucks up a lot of resources for not much gain.  I can see why a lot of Game companies abandoned the Computer Towers and develope there games on Consoles now.  Seems like a lot less headaches.

David, have you thought about porting over your game to a Linux OS?  I don't know much about Linux OS's, but the way Microsoft is heading, I'm really thinking about Linux.  Is this even possible?

As for my problem with Max Football, I'm glad to hear that it is still possible to run the game on Win98.  Not sure what my problem is.  I have the game installed on a computer that can run it, its just gives me the Error message when I click the Max Football button to start the game, it doesn't even get to the loading screens.  It may be my OS itself, I may not have the latest version of 98.  I'll have to check into that.

Magnum357, im pretty sure this file only relates to the positions in a formation when you are using the PDS. I think substitutions are handled by something else....David would be the expert on this, obviously :-)

Gary is correct. The information in those files is for formation creation only. Once the formation is made, the position data is stored in the play data files and loaded from there. Changing the information in those files will not effect existing plays or plays created from existing formations. Just new formations.

Ok,

I normally don't mess with dat files, constants..or whatever but I'm curious.

I see you and Tbird are editing teampos.dat for 8 man punts.

My question? Can one edit these files to change what positions are used in the team depth chart universally?

For instance I want to edit the 11 man default forms to use the roster position TE, instead of R1, CT instead of an OL and KR instead of RB1/2. Can this be done? If so how? Can I do it with the notepad?

No not really
it only shows the basics stuff like OFF, DEF, kickoff, kickret, punt, puntret for each type of rules. It shows what positions are available for those types of plays. I guess you can add Linebackers and DBs to the offensive side of the ball but I haven't tried it.

You can do it for the Special Teams for sure tho.

Yeah I played around with it this morning just to see how it worked. It is already set up the way I'd do it anyway.

Gary everything works fine for me except I didn't edit the draft profile.  Any clarification on how to do that?  Otherwise my league started up and is running fine except I have no punters.

Go here with windows explorer

C:\Matrix Games\Maximum-Football\TeamProfiles

Create a text file named as below....

20_Indoor.txt or name it whatever you want, just make sure it has the 20_ first.

copy and paste the below into it

Maximum-Football Team Profile File
Rounds:0
RosterSize:20
TeamID;Rnd;Pos;Criteria 1;Criteria 2
6;1;QB;Pass Strength;Pass Accuracy
6;2;WR;Catching;Speed
6;3;DB;Coverage;Speed
6;4;DB;Coverage;Speed
6;5;RB;Speed;Strength
6;6;WR;Catching;Speed
6;7;OL;Blocking;Strength
6;8;DL;Block Avoidance;Speed
6;9;OL;Blocking;Strength
6;10;DL;Block Avoidance;Speed
6;11;P;Kick Strength;Kick Accuracy
6;12;K;Kick Accuracy;Kick Strength
6;13;OL;Blocking;Strength
6;14;DL;Block Avoidance;Speed
6;15;DB;Coverage;Speed
6;16;QB;Pass Accuracy;Pass Strength
6;17;DB;Catching;Coverage
6;18;LB;Speed;Coverage
6;19;DL;Block Avoidance;Speed
6;20;OL;Blocking;Strength

then save the txt file.

start the game, and go to your league and view team, whatever team you want

scroll the change view tab until it says team profile

click import and you should be able to select your text file...do this for each team.

make whatever changes you want to the text file, the stuff i posted here is what i was tinkering with a while back. it may or may not be good for you.

I've done everthing to the teampos.dat and the rosters and can create punt return plays, but when I go to create a punt play I get a message that says: Object variable or with block variable not set in procedure clsPlaydevelopmentsystem.processmenu Press F9 to continue.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
