Since the fall of Pago-Pago on the 20th of May, I have been trying to reorganize my forces for the assault on New Zealand.  What I have found is interesting...

My Infantry have been mangled by the Marines at Pago-Pago!

1.  I have three Inf Div at 50% strength:  2nd, 4th, and 56th are on Pago-Pago and to be brough up to strength they will have to be transported to Noumea.
2.  I have one ID at 60%:  5th.
3.  The only intact Div is the 55th at Noumea.  It is in good shape--82 of 97.
4.  My Regiments/Brigades are in better shape:
---South Seas Force is at 75 of 97
---11th Ind Brigade is at 51 of 51
---9th Ind Brigade is at 41 of 51
---5th/6th Ind Brigades are at Suva and Canton sitting in garrision duty and rebuilding...

This effectively gives me the following Infantry units for Phase One of Operation Typhoon:  55th ID, 5th ID, South Seas Force, 11th Ind Brigade, and 9th Ind Brigade--Total is about 1400 Assault Points.  This SHOULD be enough to capture the South island--Chrstchurch and Dunedin.

I will add the following Engineering units:
1.  4th, 21st, 23rd Enginering Regiments
2.  24th Special Base Force
3.  3 smaller IJA/IJN BF
4.  13th Base Force

Armor/Artillery:
1.  8th Tk Regiment
2.  5th/14th Mortar Btns

Headquarter Units:
1.  3rd Fleet with Vice-Adm Takahashi
2.  11th Air Fleet with Vice-Adm Tsukahara
3.  16th Army with Mag-Gen Mabuchi
4.  3rd Air Army with Lt. Gen Sugawara

Air Power to be deployed (Total Strength about 350 aircraft):
1.  4 Daitai of Zeros
2.  6 Daitai of Bettys
3.  3 Sentai of Helens

This SHOULD easily be enough to take the South Island.  By the time it has fallen, I should have rebuild Inf Div awaiting deployment from Noumea so I can take the Northern Isalnd.  I expect to find the 1st Marine Division there...

Do you think I can destroy ANOTHER Marine Division???!!!

It is currently the 23rd of May.  Operation Typhoon shall commence about the 15th of June...

Hmmm... it seems that maybe Cap has been spending too much time on his AAR and not enough time considering his game moves... perhaps a lesson to us all?

On another note: where will M&M Airlines operate from if New Zealand falls?

It is exciting to see a new reader who is also comparing the AARs.  I have heard that Capt Mandrake's is a masterpiece to read and participate in!  Alas...I am a poor creator and TOO boring!

The M&M comment would have made no sense until recently.  I have been reading the Voyages of the Hibiki by Cuttlefish and gotten some twisted insight into Mandrake's AAR!  I cannot wait to get a shot at going through it.

Hey John, looks like you're putting in some late hours.

M&M has become a multinational (multi-AAR) corporation.  Take a look at Mandrake's previous AAR from a team game to get an idea of his warped and extremely creative sense of humor:  http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=861689

Bring some popcorn and a few hours to kill reading, laughing, and probably also learning some strategy.

Operational Planning
Operation Typhoon

Date: 23 May 1942

From: C-in-C Combined Fleet, Adm Yamamoto Isoroku

To: C-in-C 3rd Fleet, C-in-C 16th Army, C-in-C 11th Air Fleet
As you know due to the Battle of Pago-Pago, this operation was moved from a May launch point to June.  Captain Kuroshima Kameto has developed this plan and has the highest hopes for its execution and success.   You are hereby ordered to move from theoretical planning for the invasion of New Zealand (Operation Typhoon) to concrete operational execution.

The following units will be at your disposal:
Naval Support:
KB-1 (Akagi, Kaga, Soryu—207 Aircraft) and escorts
KB-2 (Shokaku, Zuikaku, Shoho, Zuiho—204 Aircraft) and escorts
KB-3 (Junyo, Hiyo, Ryujo—150 Aircraft) and escorts
Close Cover Force (to be built around 3BB and escorts)

In a change from the earlier issuance of this order, please note that several of these carriers are in need of yard maintenance due to the extended Pago-Pago Operation.  Please use KB-1 in a support role since they have all incurred serious operational damage.
Be advised that Signals Intelligence as well as Glen Recon planes have spotted significant American naval units moving westwards towards New Zealand in the previous 10 days.  Tentative strength is estimated at 2-3 Fleet carriers, several battleships plus support units.  Take appropriate measures to plan for and destroy these units!

Air Support:
4 Daitai of Zero (108 planes)
5 Daitai of Betty (135 planes)
2 Sentai of Helen  (76 planes)

The Helen bombers shall be embarked onto transports to be landed at the target hex (Dunedin, NZ).  The Zeros shall fly from Norfolk Island once Dunedin has been captured.  The Bettys shall arrive from Noumea.

All these unit have seen significant combat recently at Pago-Pago and are well-rested.  They are among the premier pilots of the Japan.

Ground Support:
5th and 55th Infantry Divisions
South Seas Detachment, 9th Independent Brigade, 11th Independent Brigade
2 Large Base Force
3 IJN/A Base Force
3 Engineering Regiments
2 Artillery Regiments
1 Tank Regiment

Additional forces, in the form of 3 Infantry Divisions, shall become available to you once they have recovered their strength at Noumea from the extensive losses incurred at Pago-Pago.

Operational Goals:
1. Capture South New Zealand Island

You will make your initial landing at Dunedin and then drive north towards Christchurch.  In landing here, you should not come under close-range aerial attack but from Christchurch.

2. Capture North New Zealand Island

3. Destroy any and all shipping within ports and adjacent area

As already mentioned, the destruction of significant portions of the American Fleet is a pre-eminent goal.  If the opportunity presents itself, it is your PRIMARY objective.

The initial Operation shall commence in the following Phases:
Phase One--D-21
21 SS (7 being Glen-equipped) shall depart Noumea on or about June 10th. These SS shall do an initial Recon of area and direct KB TF towards any shipping that is spotted.

Phase Two--D-18--KB-1, Close Cover TF, a fueling TF, and 3 Invasion TF shall depart Noumea and take SE course to bring them to the target from due east.

Phase Three--D-10--KB-2&3 with a refueling TF shall depart Noumea and position itself between Australia and New Zealand. This should be done as if to appear to be a RAIDING Mission to deceive the Allies of our true intention.

Phase Four--D-Day set as July 1, 1942--Landings shall commence with the 2 Infantry Divisions, the South Seas Force, all the Engineers, and Artillery. Remaining TF will wait to offload pending situation.

After capturing initial objective, 16th Army shall then advance northwards to capture Christchurch by land.

Resistance at Dunedin is expected to be made up of the Port CD unit, an Infantry Brigade, and 1-2 base force support units.

Be aware that as you begin execution of this plan, C-in-C 14th Army will concurrently launch Operation Southern Wind (the capture of NW Australia).  His Operational Order shall be issued within days.

The eyes of the Empire are upon you!

Adm. Yamamoto Isoroku

Operational Planning
Operation Southern Wind

Date: 23 May 1942

From: C-in-C Combined Fleet, Adm Yamamoto Isoroku

To: C-in-C 3rd Fleet, C-in-C 15th Army, C-in-C 5th Air Army
The Imperial Staff has directed that you be tasked with the invasion and occupation of NW Australia (Perth, Broome, Darwin, Alice Springs and all points in between).  The objective shall be the complete destruction of all troops stationed within this area.  You shall conduct the operation as a giant pincers movement by blocking the enemy forces SE of Darwin and then the occupation of Perth with subsequent operations northward into the Broome area.

The following units will be at your disposal:
Naval Support:
KB-4   CVE Hosho, CVE Taiyo, CVE Unyo, CS Mizuho, and 7DD---67 Planes and 16 FP
Close Cover Force     2BB, 4CA, 1CL, 7DD

You will be short on aerial support but it is hoped that the element of surprise and Operation Typhoon to your east shall draw away any major Allied air and sea units.

Air Support:
2 Daitai of Zeros
3 Sentai of Oscars
3 Sentai of Helens
1 Daitai of Betty
3 Sentai of Tina Transports

These planes shall operate out of Timor and Babo, NG and distract the enemy as to your intentions.

Ground Support:
Perth Invasion Force:
Imperial Guards, 16th, and 48th Infantry Divisions
65th Brigade
Both Parachute Regiments
2 Artillery Regiments
2 Aviation Regiments
4 IJN/A Base Force
3 Engineering Regiments
2 Artillery Regiments
1 Tank Regiment

This force shall land on the beaches 240 miles North of Perth.

Darwin Blockading Force:
38th Infantry Division
4th, 35th and 65th Infantry Brigades
4 Construction Battalions
You shall land this Force on the beaches SE of Darwin and drive to cut the road (approximately 60 miles) leading from Darwin to Alice Springs and Townsville.

Operational Goals:
Phase One    On or about July 5, 1942, land and then drive south to capture Perth.  Once Perth is captured, move that force northwards to cutoff Allied units and drive on Broome.

Phase Two    On or about July 15, 1942, cut off Allied withdrawing units from Darwin region.

Phase Three  From Perth, use Tina transport planes and Paratroopers to capture Alice Spring.

Phase Four    This shall isolate the Allied forces and you may reduce them at your leisure.

Notes
The enemy should be thoroughly distracted with the commencement of Operation Typhoon on July 1st.  You are to rely upon surprise and speed for your operation to be a success.

Banzai!
Adm. Yamamoto Isoroku

Combat Report
May 21-24, 1942

After the bruising battle of Pago-Pago, things somewhat settle down as I prepare the joint offensives against New Zealand and NW Australia.

North Pacific

No activity.

Central Pacific

Midway B-17 raids every other day.

SE Pacific

I begin a massive air, land, and sea redeployment. Troops are being picked up at various locations and being shifted around. Planes are easiest to move so I do that within a day or two of activity and let them rest and rebuild their morale. Here are numbers of planes and locations of major ship units (I‘m also listed their air support number after notes):

New Caledonia 108 Zero, 90 Helen, 144 Betty, and 18 Mavis/Emily are spread around the 3 bases. KB-2, with most of the operational Combined Fleet, is resting here: Shokaku/Zuikaku/Soryu, 3BB, 5CA, 3CL, 28DD. KB-3 will arrive on the 25th and disband for R&R: Junyo/Hiyo and Ryujo. (A.S.--500)

Suva/Nandi 36 Zero, 54 Sally, and 63 Nells--This is my Reaction Force to anything they might pull while I’m in New Zealand. A reorganized KB-1 is resting and (hopefully) repairing in the port: Akagi/Kaga, Zuiho/Shoho, plus 3CA, 2CL, and 13DD. (A.S.--235)

Upolu Nothing (A.S.--60)

Tongatapu Nothing (A.S.--180) Will move one Aviation Regiment from here to P-P.

Pago-Pago 36 Oscars, 36 Lily, 27 Val, 27 Kate, and 9 Recon (A.S.--90)

Canton 12 Oscars, 27 Zero, 36 Sonia, 27 Kate, and 9 Recon (A.S.--120)

SS and ASW Action Things continue to be hot and heavy in this region. I have switched most of my planes to ASW Patrol and I have strong escorts moving the troops convoys around. My combined forces damage 2SS and sink SS Tautog during these four days. The Allies manage to put Torps into 2 AK.

NAVAL ACTION! My Glen-SS weren’t misleading me. The American Fleet has moved into New Zealand waters. On the 23rd, I spot three TFs moving northwards from Aukland. The lead one is a CA-CL-DD TF followed a couple of hexes later by a pair of CV TF (CV Saratoga definitely seen).

My Bettys and Zeros swarm over the Surface TF! An afternoon raid of 47 Zero and 54 Betty smash this group of ships. Combat Results: CAs San Francisco--6TT, Australia--2TT, Chicago--1TT, and CL Phoenix--1TT. For a loss of 4 Betty, I sink San Francisco!

Hoping for more on the 24th, my pilots are disappointed when the Allies withdraw and bad weather hampers search efforts--DARN!

I move a group of 6SS into the path of these ships returning to Auckland. We’ll see… Auckland itself has been mined pretty heavily over the last 2-3 weeks as well…

This is a good thing. Those cruisers cannot interfere with anything I do coming up and have a real chance of being trapped when my invasion begins. Could be some very good results…

Philippines

Continue moving troops from Manila to Koepang for Operation Southern Fury.

Land at Zamboanga and take it on the 24th.

Iliolo is the only Allied base left in the Philippines. It will serve as my pilot training target. There are two units sitting there, so there will no CHEATING taking place! Begin to beef up Cagayan to serve as the launching base for this training program.

NW Aussieland

Kai Island His planes from Darwin continue hitting this base every few days but do little damage.

Lautem and Amboina Occasional bombing raids hit here to no great effect.

Koepang Starting to get cramped from all the shipping dropping off troops. My opponents are noticing the build-up and have started the occasional raid here. I move two large Sentai of Oscars and the Tojo Daitai to provide CAP.

KB-4 (CVEs Hosho, Unyo, and Taiyo) is commerce raiding and getting intel on Perth. They sink a MSW on the 23rd as they round the NW corner of Aussieland.

Western DEI

Pretty quiet. Moving supply and fuel convoys to Koepang for future operations.

Burma

Akyab Bombers and Fighters from Rangoon continue everyday training missions to help bolster experience.

Mandalay Occasional raids but nothing of import.

Andaman Island Expanding a minefield here to cause havoc with the Royal Navy.

China

Yenen Large raids start again as we prepare to move against this city.

Chungking Nate notices a concentration of P-40/Chinese Ftrs here and performs two offensive sweeps involving 3 Zero Daitai. The fight is tough! In the aerial battles, a total of 32 Zeros (only 19 pilots though) for 50 Chinese and AVG planes. Not bad but we don’t need more large fighter losses. I am sure that the ALLIES can’t effort it EITHER!

Hanoi Two of the Zero Daitai move here and prepare to sweep southern Chinese bases where only Chinese fighters have been spotted.
Totals for the Week:

Ships Sunk

Japanese
10 Total--3AK, 6AP, 1PC----All damaged from P-P Operation

Allied
4 Total--2 MSW, CA San Francisco, and SS Tautog

Aircraft Losses

Japanese
34 F, 4 B, 2 Recon---Total: 40 aircraft
Fighter losses are over China.

Allied
66 F and 5B---Total: 71 aircraft
Mainly China losses. YOUCH on the Fighter losses for them!

Combat Report
May 25-27, 1942

North Pacific
Everything quiet here.

Central Pacific
Midway            No Midway raids on these three days.  I have become used to seeing the B-17s every other day…

Palmyra            Ro-68 is hit by land-based air on the 26th and sinks on the 27th.

SE Pacific
Transport Shipping       Massive numbers of AP/AK move between the Pago-Pago to Suva to Noumea lanes.  I am gathering the ground forces for Operation Typhoon at Suva.  Figure all troops will be in place by June 1st.

Naval Shipping I continue a complete reorganization of the Combined Fleet.  My ships are TIRED and need maintenance!  Here are my CVs and their Sys Damage numbers:

Akagi

4243

Kagi

4647

Soryu

50
51

Shokaku

54
55

Zuikaku

5859

Ryujo

6263

Junyo

66
67

Hiyo

70
71

Shoho

74
75

Zuiho

7879

Normally I would send the majority of the Fleet home and do maintenance but MUST wait until Typhoon is finished.  The CVs and Combined Fleet are being split between Suva and Noumea.  Operational Reality has caused me to reorganize my Cvs into a slightly new arrangement of the KB TF:

KB-1   Akagi/Kaga/Soryu (69Z/69V/69K—207 Planes) with CAs Tone, Myoko, Haguro, CL Yubari, and 8 DD

KB-2   Shokaku/Zuikaku/Ryujo (77Z/48V/66K—191 Planes) with BC Hiei, CAs Chikuma, Chokai, CL Yura, and 8 DD

KB-3   Junyo/Hiyo/Shoho/Zuiho (70Z/34V/58K—162 Planes) with CAs Kumano, Suzuya, Takao, Ashigara and 7DD

Norfolk Island              I have moved 2 Chutai of Emily to this strategic location.  My opponents do not like it!  Two days in three see B-17 raids of about 36 4EB.  I move a Daitai of Zeros there on the 26th and they manage to shot down 1 B-17 and damage 7 out of a 36 plane raid on the 27th.

The AF here is only Size 1 (16%) and I want it moved to Size 2 before the Operation.  Send two complete Engineering Regiments and 2 IJN BF there with 10,000 supply.  These two convoys should arrive on the 28th.  I expect 10-12 days worth of work to get the AF up to where I want it.

ASW and SS Operations
My increased aerial ASW missions result in many more SS contacts and attacks.  Don’t score any hits but my opponents realize what I am doing.  Additionally, my ASW TF damage two more Allied SS over there three days.  More importantly, I don’t have a single troop transport hit during these days.

US NAVY SPOTTED!  Add to the Saratoga a definite spotting of the USS Hornet at Wellington on the 27th.  I am counting on at least 3 Allied CV for opposition to Operation Typhoon.

Philippines
Zamboanga      Capture this town on the 25th.

Iloio                 Begin daily raids of this base for my pilot training training.

NW Australia
KB-4 CVEs Hosho, Unyo, and Taiyo (5Z/18V/41K) with CS Mizuho, AV Kiyokawa Maru (14 Jakes/14 Alfs) and 7DD does a RECON MISSION of Perth.  An intrepid Alf pilot flies over the target of Operation Southern Wind and finds the following:  Port 6, AF 5, 4 Units (6500 men), 25 guns, 12 AFV, 15 ships in port, and 8F/26B/29Aux for aircraft.  Though Southern Wind won’t start for a month, this provides invaluable information.

Imperial HQ will now forecast resistance at Perth to be 1 Inf Div, 1 Brigade, 1 CD Unit, and 1 large BF—25,000 troops.

Kai and Lautem            The Allies continue regular bombing raids here.

Koepang          The bustling port and AF of Koepang is recon’d everyday.  The port expends to 5 on the 26th and the AF is about to go up to 5 very soon.  I have 200 planes here (70F and 110B).

ASW and SS   My opponents must be operating a group of SS out of Darwin or Broome.  There are SS everywhere North and NW of Koepang!  I increase aerial ASW missions as well as set two ASW TF to work.  I damage an SS and have an SS shell a TK.

DEI
Supply and Tanker convoys moving through here with nothing else of note.

Burma
I am pulling my aerial assets back to Rangoon.  The coming attack in NW Australia dictates that I rest my planes and move them to the new area.  I am not abandoning my army here but am certainly changing emphasis areas!  Have only so many Daitai/Chutai and Sentai…

No major developments here.  There are bombing mission flown by Nate to Akyab, our opponents strike Pagan with heavy aerial power (71 P-40 and 103 4EB (YIKES!)) on the 26th.

China
Yenen  Large Japanese raids hit this city on the 25th and 27th.  An average of nearly 70 Fighters and 110 Bombers concentrate on this AF.  Time is coming for Nate to launch his gathered troops for an attack upon this town.

Japan
Shipyards         I thought that people might like to know what is currently in the Japanese naval repair yards.  Here is the current tally and major ship’s System Damage percentage:

BB Yamashiro

186187

BB Kirishima

190191

BB Kongo

194
195

BB Haruna

198
199

1 CL

7 DD

2 SS

Losses for May 25-27th

Ship Losses
Japan              5 Ships—2AP, 1AK, 1MSW, and Ro-68
Allies               None

Aerial Losses
Japan              1 Zero and 5 Bombers
Allies               4 Fighters and a 1 4EB

Comments
With KNOWING where two Allied CVs are, I am thinking of sending CVs out early to try and sink these valuable targets PRIOR to Operation Typhoon.  What might anyone have to say about this??

Depending on the amount of LBA in the area, I would mass the KB and go CV hunting.   You've mentioned that one objective of your NZ invasion is to force a naval engagement while you still have the edge.  If you can trim the allied naval power down a bit without having to risk losing fully loaded transports, why not go for it?

Only good way i know to do it is do a screen capture of the table (in whatever program you created it in) then paste it into MSPAINT (or whatever) and trim it down to size, then post it as a jpeg.

Thank you rtrapasso!  Didn't have clue about it whatsoever.  Was all proud of myself and that I did a table and was then twarted!  Very bad for Japanese morale...

USS America--I think you are right.  I've been moving dozens of warships to get them set between Noumea and Suva.  The turn I just sent my opponents is May 31st.  I need to get some fueling done and then it is CV hunting time!

I am concerned about the 4EB in Auckland.  They have at least 60 4EB there and I HATE THOSE THINGS!  Should be able to handle nearly everything else.

I want to also check for any reinforcement convoys traveling the southern route.  Would like to sink some fully laden APs!

Will do a posting on Sunday/Monday with updated tactical and strategic planning...

Combat Report
May 28-June 1, 1942

On June 1st, the anchors are lifted from the bottom of the harbors at Suva and Noumea as 25 Japanese SS depart to take up stations around New Zealand. Operation Typhoon has commenced…

North Pacific

No activity.

Central Pacific

Midway B-17 raid on the 29th. On June 1st, my aerial recon picks up a STF approaching the atoll. I fly in two Chutai of Betty to provide a warm reception…

Canton My LBA damages SS Grampus on the 29th.

SE Pacific

Redeployment of ground forces is almost complete. All my convoys are meeting at Suva and will then head southwards before turning west into Dunedin, NZ.

Suva Am awaiting two tanker convoys so I can fuel all my warships to the brim. I shall bring a pair of tankers with the invasion convoys to provide fueling while on the way. KB-3 (Junyo/Hiyo, Shoho/Zuiho) rest here and will cover the Invasion Forces as well as look for Allied convoys.

Noumea Plenty of supply and fuel provide my ships with what they need here. I have 4 AR working on damaged ships as well. Six CV are here: KB-1 (Akagi/Kaga and Soryu) and KB-2 (Shokaku/Zuikaku and Ryujo) will depart this port when the new IJN Yamato arrives in a couple of days.

Norfolk Island Am building up the aerial support units here. This will be a staging base for my Zeros and Bombers to get to NZ AF. The build-up draws notice with Allied air raids on the 30th and 31st. About 30 B-17 attack but do little damage.

SS and ASW Action My increased LBA ASW attacks are working. I damage two more Allied SS and don’t have a single ship TT'd during this stretch of days.

New Zealand
(New Heading!)
I do some Emily recon:
Auckland Spotted: 12 P-40, at least 50 4EB, 7 units, 2400 troops, 11G, and 4AV.

Wellington Spotted: 6 P-40, 6 units, 5900 troops, 41 Guns, and 5AV.

Christchurch Spotted: 1 unit

Dunedin Don’t know until a Glen I-Boat gets down there.

Ships are spotted several times (CV Saratoga and Hornet) operating near Wellington. I have mined both Auckland and Wellington. Wellington has ships that sweep the mines but NOTHING happens at Auckland…

On the 28th I-20 is hit by LBA near Wellington.

NW Aussieland

Kai Island/Lautem/Dili These bases are not hit during this time. Rather strange…wonder if my opponents are redeploying…

Koepang Another week and this place will be ready to launch Operation Southern Fury. Lots of troops, ships, and aircraft here. They are getting reconned every day by the Aussies. KB-4 is returning here for a little R&R.

ASW Action I manage to hit S-36, Swordfish and Perch with LBA over these days! How about that??!! They KNOW I am up to something at Koepang…

Western DEI

I can’t hit ALL the SS they have!
S-36 hits an AK on the 28th near Singapore.
S-37 strikes the next day with a TT going into a TK (it sinks later) but the SS takes 5DC for its work.

Burma

Akyab Capture this base on the 1st.

Mandalay Occasional raids but nothing of import.

Andaman Island My 3rd mining circuit deposits another 1200 mines here. There are now 3,500 mines around this island. Plan to use my 6 ML to lay mines at Rangoon, Andaman, and Padang.

China

Yenen Large raids start again as Nate prepares to attack the city. Three Inf units (1 Inf Div and 2 Brigades move into the hex due south of Yenen. The bulk of his army starts moving into the city hex on the 1st.

Several Fighter Sweeps bring about disappointing results:
28th Kunming 5 Zero for 5 Chin Ftrs! EQUAL LOSSES TO CHINESE!!
30th Sian 10 Zero for 6 P-40 (AVG)
31st Sian 7 Zero/6 Oscar for 12 P-40 (AVG)

Totals for the Week:

Ships Sunk

Japanese
2 Total--1AP, 1TK
Allied
None

Aircraft Losses

Japanese
25 Fighters
Fighter losses are over China.

Allied
26 F and 1 4EB---Total: 27 aircraft
Mainly China losses.

Thanks!

June 2nd:  5 more SS depart Noumea and Suva

June 3rd:  3 more SS depart Noumea and Suva

This makes a total of 33 Japanese subs on the move towards New Zealand.  I am placing Glen I-Boats about 6 hexes to the east and west for the initial scouting.  There are four of these boats to the east and five headed to the west.  Most of the rest shall cluster around Auckland and Wellington.

I REALLY want my opponents to THINK I am headed for the north island.  Invading Dunedin should come as a major surprise and they should only be able to attack me with short or medium range planes from Christchurch.  Recon shows only one unit at Christchurch so they--probably--cannot operate TOO many planes from here.  Anything flying from Wellington to Dunedin will have a LONG flight...

The B-17s and Liberators will be a PAIN to deal with...estimates now place the total of 4EB at closer to 60 planes in Auckland!

Phase Two of Operation Typhoon begins tomorrow (June 4th) with the loading of my 3 invasion convoys at Suva.  Figure two days to load and then they will set course due south...

KB-3 will depart a few days after that and go scouting around for any US convoys...

KB-1 and KB-2 will depart tomorrow and try to FIND the American CVs spotted recently.

Here we go...

Comparing the ships sunk from May to June, I find that I lost FIFTY to only THIRTEEN!  Those fifty ships of Japan are nearly all AP/AK from the CD at Pago-Pago!    WOW!  Totally depressing...

John,

just wonder if I´m allowed to read your AAR? Or do you think I could gather too much intel for our game? If you think I shouldn´t read (I stopped at page two as I thought it would perhaps be problematic) here then please tell me!

Chris

edit: just sent you a turn btw. Hope it makes all the way to the US this time...

I would try to ensure the Allied CV's are not allowed to escape to the east and back to USA.
Force him to go west towards southern Australia.
Hopefully, you can capture Perth and get some Nell/Betty there to isolate those CV's.
Then, you have the option of trying to sink them or just keep them bottled up in Australia.

Combat Report
June 2-7, 1942

With the commencement of Operation Typhoon, a massive deployment of the Imperial Japanese Navy has begun. Forces include: 10 CV, 5 BB, 13 CA, 10 CL, 52 DD, and 34 I-Boat/Ro-SS. These numbers do not reflect the actual invasion force which comprises 105 AP/AK and 43 Escorts (PG/PC/APD/MSW) and is carrying nearly 100,000 troops of the Imperial Japanese Army.
Land Forces include: 2 Inf Div, 3 Brigade-sized Inf units, 4 lesser Inf Units, 2 Engineering Regiments, 2 Art Battalions, 2 large BF and 4 smaller BF. The HQ of the 11th Air Fleet, 8th Fleet, and 16th Army travel alongside.

Goal: The swift capture of Dunedin, New Zealand and then (by land march) Christchurch, NZ. Once the South Island has been taken, then forces will make an assault landing upon the North Island of New Zealand. The destruction of Land Units, Aerial Squadrons, and Naval Forces is to be maximized.

Now to the weekly Combat Report:
North Pacific

No activity.

Central Pacific

Midway ACTION at Midway! On the 2nd, a force of 2BB, 1CA, 2CL, and 3DD bombard the island. CD responds pretty well. I have two CD units here and they fire 93 shots damaging 2 CL and heavily damaging 2 DD. I take 434 Cas, lose 16 guns, and have the port/AF slightly damaged.

RETURN Action! A small group of 4 Bettys attack and put a TT into DD Clark that day. I move a full Daitai of Bettys there on there on the 2nd (raising my bomber force to 45 planes) and see 12 Betty sink DMS Dorsey with a TT on the 3rd. The 4th sees 10 Bettys find DD Clark again and they finish her with another TT. Unfortunately, the rest of the STF gets away. I return my Daitai of Bettys to Kwajelein for rest and await another attack.

The Americans hit Midway with 21 B-17 on the 6th and destroy 2 Betty on the ground while losing one of their own.

Pago-Pago On the 5th, LBA damages S-31.

SE Pacific

Suva Finally get enough fuel unloaded to restock all my ships for their departures with Operation Typhoon. TF that leave are:

June 5th
KB-3 (Junyo/Hiyo, Shoho/Zuiho) Heading due south.
Raider Force 2 travels with them: 2 CA (Mogami/Mikuma), 2 CL, and 4 DD

June 7th
Dunedin, NZ Invasion Forces Begin loading these troops on the 4th. Task Forces are:

Escort/Bombardment TF 3BB (Mutsu, Hyuga, and Ise) with 2 CL and 8DD

Invasion TF Four groups of AP/AK leave as well carrying the troops

Recon TF CS Nisshin and AV Kimikawa Maru carrying 32 Float Planes and 4DD raise anchor and depart on the same day. They head slightly SE to look for any US
Reinforcement TF coming from the West Coast.

Noumea Troops from the Pago-Pago campaign begin arriving and unloading. Three Infantry Divisions will spend several weeks to a month resting and re-equipping. They will form the spearhead of the North Island Invasion.

Norfolk Island As I try to raise the AF to Sz-2, the Allies try to distract me. 21 and then 22 B-17 strike on the 3rd and face 19 Zeros. Strangely they go after my shipping there (I would hit the AF) and damage several AK lightly. I lose 2 Zeros in change for 1 B-17 shot down and 18 damaged.

SW of Rabaul The Allied survivors from my capture of Rabaul are finally hunted down and forced to surrender on the 3rd. I gain about 1,500 POWs.

New Zealand

After seeing several Allied TF around Wellington in the proceeding week, I don’t see much during this time. My SS are arriving and beginning to deploy.

I do spot a TF along the south edge of the board (80,144) and I-17 sinks an AK with 2TT.

NW Aussieland

Koepang The build-up here for Operation Southern Fury is nearly complete. I gradually begin to add Fighters to this base (it goes to AF 6 on the 5th) to protect the shipping, AF, and troops. The Allies strike the base on June 2nd with a force of 35 B-17s. They are opposed by 32 Oscars/Zeros. In the aerial melee, 4 B-17 are shot down and 16 more are damaged (not TOO bad!) while I lose 2 Fighters and have 12 Bombers destroyed on the ground. I take an additional 972 Cas and see minor damage to the AF.

I have an AK damaged by SS Pike in harbor on the 7th.

ASW Action I have two ASW TF moving around here and 2 bomber Sentai on ASW Attack. They get numerous sightings and an occasional attack.

Western DEI

Near Singapore--SS Salmon attacks an AK on the surface and damages it with 10 Shells.

Burma

Akyab The Allies hit this AF about every other day.

Mandalay Occasional raids but nothing of import.

Numerous aerial attacks upon my Inf Units throughout Burma occur. Usually groups of 25-50 aircraft strike, cause some casualties, and move on. I try to periodically keep my opponents honest by a counter-attack here and there. On the 4th I jump a group of Hurricanes on strafing mode with 19 Zeros. I shot down 6 and damage 4 ore for no loss.

Rangoon Most of my in-theatre Fighters fly CAP here. Nearly 60 Fighters are here split between Zeros and Oscars. I am off-loading a supply convoy there (40,000+ supply).

China

Yenen The siege of Yenen has begun. A force of 5 ID, 5 Brigades, 5 Art Reg, and 4 Eng Reg have moved into the hex. To the south of the city sits 2 ID and 1 Inf Brig--they are moving further east in an effort to surround the town. More units are about to move into hex due north of the city.

Aerial attacks (average 60 F and 100 B) hit that base on 2nd, 3rd, and the 6th.

The initial assault on Yenen occurs on the 6th. In a deliberate attack, results are quite favorable. We get a 0-1 but reduce Forts from 8 to 7 (assault points Jpn-2133 to Ch-7863). In actual casualties, we see: 6,576 Cas, 180 Guns, and 4 V for 1,902 Ch Cas and 47 Guns.

Totals for the Week:

Ships Sunk

Japanese
2 Total--1ML, 1AK

Allied
4 Total--DD Clark, DMS Hovey, 1 AK, and SS Grampus

Aircraft Losses

Japanese
23 Planes--7 Fighters and 16 Bombers

Allied
6 F and 7 4EB---Total: 13 aircraft

I see you divided your carriers in three divisions. Is that calculated risk or could this lead to a, ehhmm, "disaster"? You know what I´m talking about, don´t you? Shok... glug glug, Zuik... glug glug, Ryuho... glug glug...

How many CVs could you expect to face? IIRC you sunk two US CVs early on while losing one yourself. Any other CVs sunk? Your opponents already got two US CVs and a couple of those sturdy British CVs. If they jump on one of your KB divisions at the right moment then it could not be what you want to be it...

4 US CVs in one hex are almost twice as many planes as your single KB divisions. Add to that British CVs (do you have intel where they are?) and a hit and run tactic could inflict some damage (only damage in the best case). Coupled with LBA that actually can hit something (this is stock isn´t it?) I see some danger...

Why not just take the complete KB to cover your invasion and destroying everything that comes into range? Your carriers would be save against LBA attacks (mostly I think, with a high CAP you would bring up 150 Zeroes) and if your opponents would decide to attack they would be toast.

Worst case: split your carriers, take some bomb hits from LBA first (probably can´t be driven off by a CAP of 50 Zeros), then you have to cover your invasion TF close against the expected enemy CVs while retreating your two or three damaged carriers that get jumped by the massed Allied carriers which can move 10-12 hexes per turn.

When you already know that 2 US CVs are in the area, couldn´t you expect more? I would NEVER send out 2 CVs alone. There´s nothing those 2 CVs would achieve on a mission like "defend New Zealand"...

Do you have any stacking limits?

Hey Chris!  I am sending you an email after this entry.

Your comments are right to the point.  I have concentrated my KB-1 and KB-2 together to operate as one unit.  These 6 CV have 146 Z, 117 V, and 135 K between them.

I have seen two US CVs for certain.  I plan on fighting a minimum of 3 carriers.  If this is the case, then it will be bloody but I will win.

The RN CVs have not been seen for quite a while.  I know they are around because my opponents took a Political Points hit at the start of the month for not withdrawing Brit ships.  In all honesty, I have not thought about them in a while.

Just completed the June 7th/8th turn and sent it to them.  In that round, I spotted a TF (Identified as 1CV and 1CA--by Glen) about 12 hexes from NZ.  I did not get a course heading.  Am wondering if this is a new CV moving to join the NZ concentration or if they are pulling out and moving east.

Following the principle of calculated risk, I ordered KB-3 (about 12 hexes away) to move in a SE direction for possible intercept.  These CVs are out on a limb if they find more then 1 US CV!  Will have to see how it plays out...

Thanks for the thoughts!

Combat Report
June 8, 1942
“American Carrier Spotted”

Looking down through the clouds 11,000 Feet beneath, Lt. Sakamora spots wakes of ships beneath his Glen reconnaissance plane. Through a hole in the clouds, he spots the unmistakable wooden deck of an American carrier and the stout 8” guns of a heavy cruiser. As he prepares to take a closer look, he spots American Wildcat fighters charging towards. The fighters don’t get a shot at him but they do force him to stay away until his fuel reserves are depleted and requires him to return to his parent I-Boat. While flying home, he amplifies a signal to Combined Fleet at Noumea…

Oh, my…

The spotting report didn’t tell me direction, speed, or composition of TF beyond what I have written. The location of the TF is approximately 900 miles east/southeast of Dunedin, NZ. Are they heading in to New Zealand as reinforcements? Are they withdrawing towards the West Coast? Is there only 1 CV?

With my forces already at sea, I order KB-3 to move in a SE direction. These ships are currently about 12 hexes due north of the contact. A fight could be in the offing if this force is moving east. If they are moving west, then I have a pair of Glen I-Boats that should spot them.

Composition of KB-3:
Junyo--17Z/17V/17K/8K
Hiyo---17Z/17V/17K/8K
Shoho--18Z/12K
Zuiho--18Z/12K

Total: 70Z/34V/74K

TF Escorts include: 4CA and 7DD

All my Floatplanes (12 total) are set on recon and my Daitai are set as follows: Zeros (CAP 60%), Vals (0 Search), and Kates (0 Search).

If this is a lone carrier, I should be able to sink it with little risk; however, I do not understand why a lone American CV would operate ANYWHERE in the Pacific! If there are 2 carriers, then this is an even fight where it would be bloody…

I decide to also set KB-1 and KB-2 to circumnavigate NZ. They will travel in a wide circle looking for trouble. If this American carrier IS headed to NZ, then I have an excellent chance to sink it!

Thoughts???

Good (early for Colorado) Morning!

I typed out a four page synopsis of the operations covering June 9-13th.  As I am sure Capt mandrake has reported in his AAR, a terrible calamity befell my CVs to the east (about 1000 miles) of NZ.  My brilliantly written report is sitting in my flash drive because I couldn't get the computer where I stay at to connect (dial-up!  ) to AOL before going to work.

So it sits in the flash.  It is in works and I have only word on this computer.  Hmmmmm....

Just wanted to post this so you know that I am still alive and haven't committed Seppuku!

Tomorrow (Friday) I return to work and the computer that has the AAR update on it.  That update shall be posted then.

I have got to note that the fate of the Empire is about to be decided!  US Carriers spotted heading towards Wellington.  KB moving to intercept!  Distance from each other with the turn I just sent--13 hexes.  HERE WE GO!

BANZAI!

My Allied opponents must be a serious state of discussion!  They are taking an exhorbinant amount of time with the next turn.  I guess they fear a REAL opponent to their 3 US CVs!

This is not the KB-3--It is the FIRST TEAM!  I have six CVs with Daitai's all in the 80-90+ Experience range.  Nearly 400 planes are warmed up on the decks of these carriers WAITING for hte Allied turn...

Just ranting some...
