I'm wanting to mod the map to make atolls visually obvious by using red text for their names (Seems appropriate). Does anyone have, or know how to find, the information on which locations are atolls?

I looked in the database editor, but didn't see anything on the pages that define the locations. Clicking on every Base, Beach and Airfield on the map is gonna take a while if I have to go that route.

What's with the new screen name?...

Dont forget that you can press '1' by default and it will list the terrain type for each hex. Then just go around and look for all the 'Ca' islands (coastal, atoll). It took me forever to find this nice little surprise in the manual, its great to know where the wood, mountain and atoll hexes are. BIG assault bonus.

Hope this helps

Do I have a new screen name? I thought this was the same one I'd always had.

I was just thinking about you the other day, Lee. I just now finally deleted that game we'd started all those months ago when you were in the process of moving, or changing jobs, or something like that. Hope it all worked out.

Thanks for the tip Chad, I'd forgotten all about that one. I found them all (I think) and have updated my Subchaser map mod to have all the atoll names in red text. I had to add several new island names that weren't on the map already. I couldn't quite match the font and shadowing that SC had used, but it's still a really serviceable little mod.

If anyone reading this wants a copy of the map files, just send me an e-mail and we'll work out a way to get them to you. I've got them in a 7zip file that's 7.5 Megs. The files affected are WITN00, 05, 06, 07, 08, 11, 12, 13, 16 and 18.

I may later attempt to do the same for the version that has the hexes on it, but it's more painstaking to make yhat one look nice without destroying the hex grid and I'm just not up to it at the moment.

For anyone that just wants a list of the Atolls so you can mod your own map or refer to it for planning purposes, here goes (and if I missed one somewhere, please let me know):

On Map WITN00:
Andaman Island
Nicobar Island (SSW of Andaman Island)

i don't have a standard map loaded, but i thought places like Norfolk Island, Reef Island and some places in the New Hebrides, and Santa Cruz islands had some atolls.

Also, are places like Lanai and Niihau atolls? or are they on the standard map???

In terms of the terrain viewed after pressing the "1", is there a full list somewhere? Some are still a mystery to me.

I used Chad's technique with the '1" command and found 16 more locations that appear to be Atolls (having the Ca indicator in their hex).

There are a couple of anomolies I noticed though...

1) Several locations appear to be an atoll when you use the '1' key, although when you click on the location you can't see anything saying it's an atoll on the base screen that pops-up. I'm not sure if it's a limitation on the number of lines of data that can be displayed on the location screen, or what's going on here, but it makes it clear to me that there is more need for this little mod than I'd really even thought at first.

2) There is a hex just to the SE of Dobodura (which is east of Port Moresby) that is clearly a water hex, but it has the Ca designator that would indicate it's supposed to be a coastal atoll. I think I'm going to try and land something there and see what happens...

I'll update my list in the earlier post as soon as I've double-checked the locations and made my adjustments to the map. DONE!

Thanks again to Chad for reminding me of this helpful game feature.

I'd second that! If I find it somewhere, I'll let you know.

There have been known errors in the stock map (in the past), and i suspect not all of them have been found yet... you perhaps have discovered another one.

No problem. My life changed when I found that out :)

When you consider that a lot of important islands are 'mountains', which triple your AV, its nice to know that ahead of time for planning your offense/defense.

Press 'w' too for additional information that you forgot you could see :)
