This is from my game v. Raver. The game is stock 15 with a few modifications. We are both on 1.804.
And this is the situation...
There is a siege of Brisbane and I (Jap) am hunting subs in the Brisbane hex. Last turn I got a few attacks and two of them were like this:

First thing that cathces the eye is that the attacking DD is where a sub should be and that the sub isn't present. Another thing is that heavy smoke in the far left of the picture. That's Soryu which was crippled in March and is still over 50 sys damage and repairing - in Okayama. What happened was that the ghost TF was in the animation all the time only it was covered by the sub contact mask.

Just to show, the first two sub contacts were normal:

MSW W.9
MSW W.3

Allied Ships
SS Trigger, hits 2, on fire

The strange thing is that most of the ships included in the combatreport weren't even at sea. Only TFs in Brisbane at that moment were 1 or 2 minesweeper TFs, an ASW TF and a "bombardement gone surface combat" TF.
I don't know if that's a part of a larger issue, but in the last 2 or 3 my bombardment TFs in Brisbane have been reverting to surface combat at the point at which they should be unleashing their guns. And in the orders phase, when I want to make the TF a bombardment TF again it refuses. The option is there all right, but when I click ok it's still a SCTF!? Now, twice i just created a new bombardent TF with the same ships but only once it actually went along and did some bombarding.

Any thaughts on this strange bug?

Good Lord, either I did't explain the situation right or you didn't read the post
All the capital ships down to most CLs are disbanded in ports. That's why I say "ghost" fleet.

I am yet to see this turn as my ISP dropped it's guts last night.  I'll look when I get home in about 7 hours time.

Maybe your ISP was aboard the Uziki definitely a strange looking one!

Honda, are you saying that all those ships are disbanded in other ports, but are showing up in combat in Brisbane?

Personally, I think that the game is biased towards our Aussie friends, and whenever a Japanese player conquers as much of Oz as you have it just goes bonkers trying to get the players to quit...

Now why didn't anyone tell me that before!?
I'm still at a loss about what caused such a bug. Ever since I've read about the sych bug I stopped using esc button in combat replay. The good thing is it's effecting the war providing it remains an isolated incident. A few delayed naval bombardments are also not a problem seeing as they are regualr runs. I hope someone can shed some light on this so we know how to deal with the bug and possibly avoid it in the future...

Well let's see what happens when Raver processes the turn. That "mouse top" which we see in your screen shot to the West of Brisbane, looks like it might be the smoke from a burning ship, so at least there is some type of graphics issue between that and the DD being in the wrong panel as well and graphics issues are usually local to a particular machine. But Raver's input will give us more data to consider.

Raver had the same issue. Let me try to explain further. Those ships disbanded in ports (all over the Empire, BTW) didn't participate in combat, they only showed up in the replay. As I said, it was Soryu's burning hull that gave them away. They were just "under" the sub contact mask. DDs on the bottom of the CR are the ASW TF that is doing the hunting and they changed thier places in the part where sub should be as they made their attacks. Only I don't know if they actually were shooting at a sub or not. That's what Raver might know since they scored some hits.
We played the next turn in a changed slot and there was no ASW contacts all so I don't know if the bug is gone or not. But my naval bombardment TF again reverted to surface combat without bombarding...

Sometimes changing the saved slot helps.

Ive had that happen many times. Dont think I have ever seen it under version 1.806 however (not that I think it was solved, just that I havent seen it yet). Its just an error in what is reported, not actually what attacked the sub.

I have had this happen a couple of PBEM turns ago.  I am USN, and Kbullard is the bad guys.  He sent me the replay saying there was an error in it and sure enough, I had an ASW attack that looked just like this except it was up around Japan.

I have seen it a few other times as well.

If anyone cares, I do have the saved turns if you want them.
