Just getting back into the game after not doing much with it for the past 3 months, and now will be creating the 3-4 leagues that Im going to use. So I thought I would see what others are doing for number of teams in leagues and the number of weeks to the regular season.

For me the biggest limiting factor is the schedule generated by the game, and as a result I probably wont have leagues with more than 16 teams. Although in the past I had set up a 48 teams super college league divided into 4 divsions of 12 teams each with a 14 game schedule. The plan was to have each team play a round robin in their division (11 games) and to play 3 random non conference games to make 14. But cant get into editing a schedule of 24 games per week for 14 weeks. Im hoping that at some point someone creates a utility to generate single and double round robin play with in divisions, with additional nonconference games.

So with that limiting factor Im going to stick to smaller leagues with shorter schedules. In the past I have set up leagues of 12 teams, either with 2 divisions of 6 or 3 divisions of 4. For the 2 divisions of 6 the schedule would be a double round robin with in the division ( 10 games) plus one game vs each team in the other division (6 games) for a 16 week schedule. Or with the 3 divisions of 4 teams the schedule would be a round robin within the division (6 games) plus one game vs each team in the other 2 divisons (8 games) for a 14 games schedule.

I like to have the double round robin so that games vs teams in their own division are very important. Also I want all teams to have a equal/comparable schedule, so each team will play each other team, instead of some teams not having to play some teams that the other teams in their divsion are playing.

That brings me to my latest league. This league is based on the NFL in the early 60s, the 12 original teams plus those added in the early 60s (Dallas, Minnesota, Atlanta and New Orleans). THe league has 2 conferences, each conference has 2 divsions of 4 teams for a total of 16 teams. Since I would like the stats to be comparable the games will be played out instead of fast simmed. Because of that I decided to go with a shorted schedule. Each team will play the other teams in their division 2 times (6 games) plus they will play the 4 teams in the other division in their conference one time ( 4 games) for a total of 10 games. So they wont have any games vs the teams from the other conference so when the playoffs begin no teams will play teams they have played during the season.

What are others doing? I found editing the league schedule for the current league went pretty fast and easy. Are you using the schedule generated by the game or are you editing the schedule?

I usually use smaller league sizes, anywhere from 6 to 12 teams. Mainly because I find it easier to micro-manage. I like an even schedule, and I enjoy following players, watching hall of famers develop, etc. I use 8-10 min quarters and never more than a 12 week season.

I do have a current 24 team league, but thats just a play and go thing. I took the schedule as is and sim all games but my teams. I play it casually and dont get too caught up in whats going on.

As for schedules, I definately will edit it. I like to have home/away with all division teams, then fill in the rest with others if needed. And each team must have the same number of home and away games.

I prefer to call plays for my team, but will resort to just setting up a playbook and watching if I start winning too easily.
