MM.. no. not in my opinion. But don't take 10, take 20. Overcommit rather than undercommit. From there you can go towards northern Korea, altho the soviets might just beat you to that :D

While more a Jap fanboy, let me add an option to your possible destinations: Hangchow and Soochow (right next to Shanghai). I'd consider this option about equivalent to Korea.

These towns put you in range to a lot of valuable targets in Japan, China, Korea and Formosa.
Furthermore, with every day the russian activation comes closer, with an increasing threat for a chinese front in the west (sidenote: I think you should try to march to Hue or at least Pisanuloke or Ubon, threatening Hanoi and Nanning) and a lot of 'historical' targets nearby (Formosa, PI, Okinawa) you might have a chance to land in the back of his main defenses.
The terrain is also advantageous for an invasion (Cc/Cw). From here you can also go on a little endeavour on land (mostly advatageous terrain as well, as opposed to the mountains in Korea) in case your fleet needs a rest or you don't want to do another landing within weeks. Additionally, a force here might also bind some enemies and so help the russians a little bit.

A disadvantage of Hangchow and Soochow is their vincinity to many big enemy bases. Impossible to suppress them all you would face countless Kamikaze attacks and 1000++ attacking planes. From these towns Tokyo&Gumma are only in range of B29s, while from Toyohara or Korea the B24s can get there as well. Another problem might be to get good intel without disclosing your intensions.

Reeinforcements he might try to bring from the PI and Formosa (apart from airlifts and China itself, obviously, and assuming that he won't get shipping from Japan through your fleet in the East China Sea). You bypassed these defensive positions and he might have the shipping to quickly react from there. A carrier group in the South China Sea might interdict shipping or a preemptive strike on the shipping anchored in the respective harbours might trap him there.

Something like 12 Divs + 4/5 Armoured Regts would sound like a good composition to me. About 200k+ Combat Engineers, Base forces, CBs and HQs.
Regarding the attack, 2/3 in Hangchow to take the city fast and 1/3 in Soochow to block reeinforcements from Shanghai and Nanking.

But what do I say, I am just a Jap fanboy who wants to lure you into just another trap

Edit: One more thing: Supplies! Korea as well as Hangchow/Soochow would be more difficult to supply - you will need a huge amount for a big bombing campaign and a little expansion on the ground.

Yeah thanks for the tips supply are a real issue I had stockpiled a lot of supply in Malaya but it was costly in ships and I cannot keep B29's operating there for ever.

I like the idea but it feels a little deep to me (irony eh me saying its to deep

) ah well I will need to think on it a little

Southern Sakkalin does look to be a good bet as does Formosa

When I return from holiday I will examine all options more carefully

If you want to play it more safe, in that case Toyohara seems to be certainly the better choice.

Hangchow/Soochow is just meant as an alternative to other deep reaching targets like Korea, Okinawa and�Formosa. Especially the latter two, well known as prime targets, will most likely be strongly garrisoned and in Korea he might already gather forces to face the russians.
In China he also can't simply pull everything from the surrounding bases as he still has to meet the garrison requirements, even though these are pretty small in most of these bases.
Regarding reinforcements, he might have to 'buy' them with Political Points if he wants to fly them in (can't air transport Home Defense and China Command troops). This might especially trouble him if you go for Toyohara.

VP-wise (with respect to the bases alone and not counting the annihilation of big ground formations) more points can be won�on Sakkalin and Formosa.
Formosas industry could�help reduce the strain on your supply chain, assuming you got it fairly intact...

Toyohara is assigned to the Home Defense Forces, so it might(!) trigger whatever there is with respect to special Home Island invasion rules (are there any such rules?!).

The main advantages of Hangchow/Soochow are that you can go somewhere else without yet another invasion just weeks later and the chance that he has only a medium size forces around.

OK well I am back and bored waiting on turns I have examined all the alternatives and I believe my best bet is an attack on Toyohara see how that goes and then expoit as sees fit

My fleet needs about another month of refit and I grudge every day at this stage but needs must

As longer I look at the situation at Iwo, the more I think it wasn�t a mistake.
You forced him to bring in reserve troops, supply them, care for them etc at an almost isolated base, where you can bomb him at will. All his forces there are lost plus the supply he brought in. In two months you will be able to secure Iwo and he has sacrificed all his transport planes and ships for nothing but delaying the inevitable.
You should now bring supplies to the bases near Iwo so you can support your heavies for a long campain.
You will hit lots of good enemy fighters there, so you might want to start nightbombing his cities (burn them)? I�ve read that starting firestorms is the most potent way of destroying enemy industry.
Do you think you could start a mining campain against his ports? Should make him burn fuel.

Hmmm I hope you are right I just think I tried to rush it.

I n eed to wait 6 weeks for my next big adventure but troops and ships are slowly assembling

I am supplying Marcus but none of my heavies can reach Japan yet but it is coming !!!!

OK what to do next in the West.

Assuming my additional 30,000 men allow me to take Bangkok and link up with the landing force in the South where do I go next ?

The base I really want is the one between Hanoi and Saigon its a big AF potentially in range of a lot of Industry.

Another amphib is a possibility but the fear of landing into another set of lvl 9 forts holds me back.

I could just link up my forces and then order a mass attack down the rail line but the battle at Bankok is weakening my forces so I am not sure what to do.

OK 10 days have passed and apart from repeated shock attacks at Bankok not much has happened PZB performed a surface raid at Marcus and ran into a small DD Sqn led by Tromp.

Bankok fell yesterday after a hard fought battle the Battle Honour will be added to the roll of honour of the Australian Army - But the army is wrecked my plans for SEA conquest are on hold the army needs 3 weeks to refit the armour is in good shape but the inf got chewed up in the fight for the city.

My Armour pursued but I have decided not chase him down.

OK some more info things have went well in the last few days I will get back to daily updates next week when things calm down at work.

Western Theatre

The Australian Army resting from its victory in the Battle of Bangkok has not pursued the Japanese North insead I recalled the armour as it was in reasonable shape compared to my gutted Inf Divs.

I ordered most of the Armour and all Arty and AA to move South to join the force besieging Sieman after two days the bridghead was linked with 1st Aus Army with the armoured spearhead from 1st Army the US Corps broke through at Sieman in a single day !!!!

Armour let lose in open country for the first time pursued with a vengeance 500 Tanks bouced the japanese out of Kratie and then out of Pnom Penh

Follow up forces of 1st US Cavalry Div crossed the river securing a foothold threatening Bien Po.

All th etime the Aussies are resting in Bangkok and reorganising a fresh Aus Div (3rd) was brought up to Bangkok to spearhead the next attack.

The plan is as follows

4 Aus Light Armoured Regts in Stuarts are driving on Ubon supported by 2 Seabee Bns a base force and 3rd Aus Div.

2 Parachute Bdes are prepped for Ubon and ready to drop in if required.

After Ubon is secured it is my Intention to mount a seaborne invasion of either northern French Indo China around Hanoi, or around Hue or on the Island of Hainan

Hanoi is risky as its close to training areas so my B29's have been resting as they will be required for AF suppression if I go that route.

If this works I will pincer the Japanese forces in French Indo China and can eliminate them at my leisure.

The success or failure of this operation is secondary I Just want PZB to draw troops out of China or HI to stop me as I will conduct flanking Amphib assaults when required to cut off and wipe out his troops.

I have 1st USMC Div/ 3rd USMC Div and 24th US Div ready for this operation.

After the conquest of French Indo China is complete the two USMC Divs will rest ready for my HI Adventure.

Eastern Theatre

Forces are congregating at Pearl thousands of ships are in the harbour, hundreds of thousands of men get ready.

My carriers are knocking off sys damage and need another 3 - 4 weeks to be ready but then it will be time to pull the trigger

I am going to sent about 15 Divs I hope against HI or Sakkalin or Korea

A further 5 Divs will join them from the West (incl 2 USMC Divs) the next attack will NOT fail !!!!

It takes about 60-80 AK's for a div to do a full oneturn landing. That's 1000 AK's :)

Ofcourse you now have a buttload of landing crafts anyway.

I'd say no. Even with the landingcrafts and all the AP's he'd need about 500 atleast imho.

I remember someone saying, and maybe it was Andy Mac in this thread, that if a Japanese player really wants to hurt Allied logistics the thing to do it to go after AKs, more than APs or even TKs. Looks like that may be true.

while it�s surely true that AKs are a limiter for the Allied later on I just wonder how a Japanese player can concentrate on sinking AKs early on...

Most times it�s just pure luck if you stumble with KB over a 100 ship AK TF that brings something to Australia. Other times you hit a three ship TF of your opponent warning him KB is around and the following TF with 75 ships escapes untouched...

Ah sorry to be unclear thats just the AK's at Pearl or en route I have several hundrend more on auto convoy duty or at Singapore

About 30 of the AP's are 2k ones and the LST's alone can assault lift 6 Divs so carrying capacity is not a problem

Andy did mention a long (so it seems) time ago that he feels he never has enough AKs.
I took this statement to heart and reserve the small AKs specially for amphibious use. In my recently started first PBEM I saved as many as possible from DEI and transferred them and the Brit ones over to the Pacific. They will be kept safe until the time to strike back comes - although this does place a strain on the early '42 buildup - but i'm looking longer term.

I have used 500,000 tonnes of supply in Malaya in a month between air groups and the Battle of Bangkok.

AK's are vital.

I took the strategic decision to operate out of Pearl with the consequential reduction in carrying capacity.

By shortening my LOC I have freed up 2m tonnes of AK capacity for the next attack but make no mistake I am struggling if I was trying to operate SWPAC now I would struggle.

On the AK thing, I was in the process of trying to get 5,000,000 supply just to Australia as a resource for NG and the Solomons. It takes a lot of shipping to supply the Allies. When I took over there was about 2,000,000 total supply not on the West Coast. I think I got about 3,000,000 shipped when you took over. I also think our predessers lost a number of AKs. Good luck.

Yes, the debacle at Java (which I advocated for

) really took a bite out of allied shipping, both navy and merchant. Additionally i think most of the british AK's (which there are a lot of) were also lost.
