Nik's a post counter. There's no way it is an accident how many times his logdust happens to show up at the top of a page.

Simple answer: Do not hang out with language snobs and use what ever word you please.

I have learned not to correct my wife when she uses "Upsetted". She will only get upsetted at me.

Here is one: Do you pronounce the "T" in Often? Where I grew up the T was silent. It was pronounced "Off-en"

We also pronounce the thing that keeps your car's enging cool as a "Rad-e-ator" with a short A sound like Rad. It "Rade-e ates" heat however with a long A sound. Drives my wife nuts. Really gets her upsetted at my speech.

When I moved to NY from LA I had to repeat myself at least 3 times before the locals could comprehend that I wanted a coffee.

OK - only the Martian has taken up the challenge!

Thats because the anime character was at work. Not fair, biased, I demand a recount!

quote:

Question 1
A. is the correct answer according to the Language Snob, usage being recommended in the US since at least the time of Mark Twain.

Since when was H a vowel anyway? I bet the An was just something British snobs made up to sound special.

quote:

B. Pleural of money is MONEYS. Someone who has a lot of money is said to be MONEYED (according to The Language Snob).

I thought money was one of those uni-tense words, like "moose". Of course I've heard "moneys" before, but no one would actually use it except in a legal contract. Is a dollar bill "money" but two dollar bills are "moneys"?

quote:

C. ding ding ding ding - Mynok is correct with B.

I guessed B...but that was just it, I guessed. Any actual reason for it being B?

quote:

D. ding ding ding ding - Mynon is correct again. Preferred spelling is "forbade", but it pronounced "for-bad". An alternate spelling is forbad.

I knew that.

The Word Snob said it was because the way the words were derived and evolved but didn't get into a lot of explanation in the interview.

Its not that I'm not satisfied with the answers, they all sound "fair and reasonable" (fyi, thats a new phrase I learned since I started in the insurance industry), but much like Snopes and such, I sometimes wonder where they get this stuff.

You cant say "an historical event" with a Cockney accent....you would trip over your own tongue and send your brain into overload.

Well, it might have been me ... I was doing some "maintenance" and the whole thing seemed to disappear for a while ... maybe it is comming back slooowly. Is the stuff really gone?

(I've asked the Matrix server guys to help - we'll try to get it all back!)

Strange. I blame communists, the Red Menace is here people . On the plus side, the recent pages of bitching and griping between forum members have gone, never to return (I hope)

EDIT: Maybe someone has invented an incredibly localised time machine Remember, retro stuff is cool again

Thank God of Chavez of Venezuela...if he weren't keeping communism alive we would have to find someone else to find fault with.
