This is a big forum, so I apologize if this is already been said. But this game seems to be identical to Avalon Hill Third Reich.

Everybody know this, right?

And this is a good thing because the PC version of that is a bomb. But FtF, Third Reich was super great. So I am definitly grabbing this game when it becomes available. See if my attack on Russia in 1939 still works on beginners!!!

Thanks.

World in Flames Final Edition with all the additions and Days of Decision is a vast improvement compared to Third Reich for a strategic WWII simulation. Third Reich has some great "what if" variants available but WiF mechanics and system possess much greater detail and accuracy (IMHO).

No, it is not the same. 14,049 posts about a game like 3ed Reich? i don't think so.

Balto, which version of 3R are you talking about?

Rise and decline of the Third Reich was a good game in its time (the 1970s), and I played it quite a few times despite the rules being hard to understand and badly organised. Anyone else remember "rules of the mechanic" ?. The units were "cookie cutter" ie generic points and standardised ground troops with only a few exceptions.

Then came Advanced Third Reich (1992) which solved the rules problems and added lots of chrome, but at its core was still third Reich, see here: http://www.isimulacrum.com/game.php?gid=3943 . Later on the Pacific theatre was added (seperate game - Empire of the rising sun  - see: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/5034 - never played it -= not sure how they applied the 3R/A3R system) and now its in its combined  incantation as "Global War".

GMT published a game called "World at War" which appears to be a simplified A3R in 2002. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/7614.  Avalanche press seemed to have acquired the original 3R and reprinted it in 2001, but with simplifying changes, along with a Pacific counterpart, Great Pacific War.

3R/A3R is to my observation more of an AH style "game"  than Wif, the number of pieces on map is  less and they are largely generic, more things are abstracted out, the naval war is handled much more simply (at least in Europe). Both however have at least one thing in common - masses of complicated chrome rules and fiddly things to remember.

A buddy tried to convince me 3rd reich was a neat game. I was very questioning about it (pre-Wif days).

Regardless, he was a much better player than I (a novice), but get this...

Whilst I was invading France, England invaded Netherlands, Blitzed off the open hex, exploited, flip-flopped, moved, attacked an empty hex and exploited into Berlin!

I suggested to him that this was not only improbable, but impossible on any normal tactical battlefield. But those were the rules...

I stopped playing the game after that. Gamey exploits are a turn off for me. Wif will not even allow you to get close to this effect without the proper reactionary move for the defender, even with a flip-flop, which are more common, but hard to control or plan for.

Wow, I never saw or heard of that Advanced 3R.  Very interesting chits.., I see factories, EXPLOIT things.., all kinds of stuff I never saw before.  I guess meant the original 1970 one.   I lost interest with that game long ago.  With HPS Simulations and Matrix, 3R is too dated to spend time on.  Thank you for that link, very interesting.  I cannot wait for WiF to come out, I will be watching and preparing for my butt whoopings.

The PC version is free.  I no longer have the link.  But trust me, it really really sucks.  The 3R boardgame is cool, but the PC version requires your opponent to resolved battles for you.., I am not explaining it well, but trust me.., it is a zero as a PC game.  Just my two cents.

Forget that number breds don't waste your money if you could find it, the game was good if you were playing a human, but the AI was horrible and I mean horrible. As Okeets said to me its not like doing a chess game with its 64 blocks. I believe that in large scale games such as WIF it is next to impossible to make a good AI opponet, could be wrong though, they say the AI of CAW will be excellent to play against, we shall see.

In high school my friend lived across the street and we had 'leave-campus' priviledges way back then, so four of us played Third Reich for 25 minutes every day at lunch. By the time Advanced Third Reich came out I was already hooked on 4th edition WiF and never even looked into it. One of my current WiF opponents has an unpunched Third Reich on the shelf in his game room we've thought about playing for the memories, but then we reminisce fondly for a few minutes and return to the Final Edition game in progress in front of us.
