Does it allow for surface intercepts like the old CAW and does it handle them any better? The old method was just pitiful.

I've had a few surface battles and they happened when my surface task force was in the same vicinity as an enemy TF.

I never played the old game but from what you say I suspect things haven't changed. Those looking for a surface combat sim need look elsewhere; this one is about the carriers.

The game does allow you to try and intercept enemy TGs and force a surface combat. It uses the same system as the original game, which disappoints a few people expecting to find a complete surface combat game inside a game about carrier warfare. The present system is adequate for representing the very infrequent surface contacts that happen in the game. It's also fast, which will be a big relief to those playing multiplayer.

The old method was so slow and clunky. I HATED surface combat.
