I'd aim for resources if you're going after raw materials. In the mid to late war I've always been able to stockpile pretty large reserves of oil, but resources are always in short supply (manpower sucks them down, and you can't turn it off).

Just my opinion - but if you're going for economic strikes, resources hurt in more ways than one...

Do you get Tigercats at least? Yes, seems odd that a game that can end 1946 doesn't have Bearcats/ Sea Furies/ Meteors

Nope no tigercats I was always one of the players who said no need for late war aircraft however giving them to one side when that side also has control of production but not the other side may be unbalancing - we shall see how it works out it should be interesting to say the least.....

OK guys Assault Force Yankee is now 360 miles north of Pearl consisting of the US 10th Army X Corps has 3 Divs and XI Corps has 3.67 Divs

Total force including armour is equivalent to 7 Divisions.

It is covered by 3 CVE's which will be joined by a TF of 4 more in mid ocean.

A further Fleet Carrier TF and heavy surface force will join them in due course.

Assault Force Zulu consisting of a further 3 Corps of 6th US Army and the 16th Army Group Reserve Corps will be departing from Pearl within 3 days.

In total 1,600 ships are being committed to this attack with TF's rendevouing from tarawa, Kwajalein, Marcus, US West Coast and Pearl.

Its my single biggest combined operation with nearly 400,000 men and god knows how many tanks and vehicles set to one objective GET A FIGHTER BASE IN RANGE OF JAPAN

Nothing else matters !!!!

I was hoping to reinforce with a strong Corps from the West but it is now clear that fighting a convoy through the gap between PI and Formosa is not possible

I tried it with my AK convoy and my carrier strength in the West is insufficient.

Instead the carriers and surface vessels will be used to fight a convoy south to Darwin where it will pick up and re supply malaya.

After I secure SEA and destroy Japanese forces in the south I will immediately begin resting troops for the next phase

You might want to ship some oil to the bases you've acquired there.

Get the factories to start producing supplies for you, and cut down on the logistics a bit...

OK guys 17th April 45

11th AF (Wake) Lt Gen Chenault was tranferred in to take command and had 271 operational B29's a raid was launched against Sapporo's Oil refinery over 200 found the target in daylight and smashed it BDA indicates heavy damage.

20th AF (Hue) Had 179 B29's operational and an effort strike was launched in daylight against Hiroshima again BDA indicates heavy damage.

18th April

11th AF (Wake) 125 Operational B29's ordered a night raid on Tokyo.

20th AF (Hue) 197 Operational B29's ordered to hit Nagasaki by night.

Does anyone know what I should target and how many hits I need to cause a firestorm ? I suspect I need to hit them harder than I am currently able.

Afaik there was an analysis a while back that showed that a night attack was useless in creating firestorms. Strong day attacks did create enough fire to damage all the industries to some degree.

PZB has probably gathered enough HI and resources and oil in his pools that it would be most effective to target his airplane and engine factories.

Thanks String,

Am I correct in saying I need to target manpower for firestorms and how does anyone know how I tell the level of a firestorm in a city ?

My supply levels in malaya and SEA outside of Hue are critical.

I am withdrawing all non B29 4E bombers to Australia and concentrating on 2 tasks

1. elimination of forces in the Cmranh Bay pocket.
2. SAC

A convoy is loading in Darwin which will provide supply for my next little adventure.....

Yep, you target manpower, and after the strike you get firelevels on the hex floating overlay or whatever they call it. 100-200k is supposedly a decent firestorm

Hi Andy,

Destruction of it is hard. You can damage most of it.

My experience of it is thus:

without fighter cover it will be hard to do much on one location consistently. For example. Lets say you're  attacking Tokyo. If you attack at night you do next to no damage. As String says it is almost impossible to get any fire damage going. If you attack at day you will be able to either:

1.) Damage specific industries fairly well with raids of 100+ B29's.

2.) Get a few 1000 fires going with Manpower hits.

Now here's the problem you'll have. PzB will likely reinforce Tokyo after tjhis first days raids with a host of other fighters = you will be unable to attack it again on the 2nd day which is what you need to do to get the fires up and up.

In short what i'm saying is without fighter escort I feel the only damage you can do to Japanese industry is random attacks on specific industry factories on daily changing locations (Tokyo, Osaka etc) It will not be possible to bomb a target consistently for weeks, fuelling fires and eventually creating firestorm factory damage, since PzB will bring in enough CAP to prevent future bombing.

Shoot and scoot.............

Do you have mossie recons or any other type of recons in range of HI to scout out bases? High detection level is always good

Thanks for the tips guys if I can take Toyohara P51's will sweep/escort attacks while B24's join in the fun !!!

I have 1 Sqn of Mossies in this game they are currently split a 5 plane element with 11th AF on Marcus and the rest of the Sqn at Hue.

Its not ideal but all I have.

My general outline for the rest of this game is as follows.

1. Take a fighter/B24 Base in range of HI
2. Eliminate Camrahn Bay Pocket
3. Attempt a landing on Japan proper
4 Re Supply Malaya
5 Attack India (with 1st Aus Army only)

Quiet few days SAC has been on stand down to try and get some more serviceability out my Bomb Groups at present I am up to 1704 VP's and have 171 Operationa Forts at 20th Airforce and 150 at the 11th I would like to get both AF's above 200 before my next sortie

I need to lower the range to make SAC decisive.

In other news CVE's transiting to Darwin knocked off some Jap convoys a re supply convoy with 300,000 supply is loading and will rendevous witht he carriers for close escort.

A second convoy atr Marcus is loading to reinforce the beachhead on Iwo it will be sescorted by my carriers operating out of Marcus

Turns are moving quickly as my fleet congregates at Midway the stat AF's are resting.

In the West 20th AF will try to hit Nagasaki by day tomorrow and will hopefully damge it heavily.

I am saving the 11th AF to some extent as I want maximum readiness when my fleet closes in on Japan.

I am reconsidering my force allocations

10th Army has 7 Divs for the attack on Toyohara BUT i must assume lvl 9 forts and 2  - 3 Defending Divs. so allowing for disruption I think I am light on forces.

Accordingly I will be committing the reserve ANZAC Corps of 4 Divs in direct support and will consider addign a 3rd Corps to 10th Army from 6th Armies floating reserve.

14 Divs is probably overkill but I want and need that base quick so I will use all force available to me....

Part of me is really tempted to land at the Jap base in the North and allow my troops to unload in safety and then march down the island but I wont !!!

That is a pretty nasty armada you got there.

I'd suggest gathering a few PT's in pools to create when you capture toyohara.

In addition the Lake Champlain TF is en route but is on the on the list above

Under repair

Enterprise 39 Sys
Independence 37 Sys
Hancock 25 Sys
Hornet 32 Sys
Essex 43 Sys
Franklin 26 Sys
Tico 35 Sys

and Boxer arrives in 20 Days

Of these I expect Hancok, Boxer and Franklin to be able to join the fleet before I commit as Hancock is alone in San Fran so is repairing quickly and Franmklyn is in dry dock at Pearl so when Boxer arrives she will sail with Hancock who should be almost fully repaired to join Franklyn at Pearl

The others I estimate will take longer and will provide wave 2 reinforcement for the fleet

Na I would but PZB like Pauk hates them so I only create them in backwater i.e. lvl 9 ports and then ferry them forward.

Plus thats what DD's are for !!!!
