I have been wargaming since the late '60's. My first wargame was Luftwaffe and it was only available mailorder direct from Avalon Hill. The thrill my pre-teen imagination felt in opening that box has rarely been equaled. A few games have satisfied the hunger. The original Carriers at War was one of them. This game is a true descentdant of that inspired original. The gameplay is virtually the same--the thrill IS the same. Very few games capture this old imagination and continue to hold it through countless hours. For the first time in Lord knows how many years, I stayed up until 4 a.m., sinking ships, saving the Arizona from certain destruction, and arming Japanese dive bombers for a strike on Port Moresby. For those of us who consider ourselves wargaming veterans, this game is Valhalla. For anyone born after Pong, welcome to our world. You missed a lot, didn't you?

There is something to be said about the "old school" games. I like to compare it to movies. Today there is lot's of eye candy and no storyline. Planet of the Apes is an example. The original was and still is a classic. Sure the special effects aren't up to snuff, but it sure as hell beat the cra* out of the remake.

Games are the same way. Today there is better technology, but the game play is sometimes lacking-Medieval Total War 2 is an example (thankfully modders like KK with the Stainless Steel 3.2 have saved the day) Between that and CAW2 I'm in heaven.

Don't get me wrong I love eye candy, but without solid gameplay its a waste. There may be few scenarios for the remake of CAW, but the randomness makes up for it in many ways.
