Windows XP? With the disc in the drive, open My Computer. Right click on the drive icon with the cd and click Explore.

Is there a run.exe ?

Is the drive a DVD or CD drive? Do you have the drive set to Autoplay? Do you have more than one drive on this computer? Do you have admin rights?

I'm not a wiz at this, just trying to think of things for you.

Look for an autorun.inf file, if there is one, it should open up with Notepad.

Hopefully, it will list the name of the file that starts the installation. if so, find that particular file using Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) and double click it.
Usually, this is a setup.exe file, but with older programs it can be anything.

If there is no autorun.inf file then search for a "setup.exe" file and double click it.

Hope this helps.

Here's a longshot. Try to run the run.exe file in compatibility mode. Do this by right clicking the run.exe, goto to properties, find the compatibility tab --make sure the box has a check in it and then use the arrow to the right to change compatibility. Try Windows 98 first. If that doesn't work try Windows 95.

If you open My Computer, does the drive show the DG icon (blue star) ?

Can you double click it?

I'm out of ideas. The copy protection AIUI is a bunch of bad sectors on the CD. Your drive may see these as a bad disc and not want to run it.

No problem, sorry we couldn't come up with the answer.

One last thing, did you try disabling your anti virus? ISTR CMAK having a problem fighting with my McAfee. The disc would spin and spin as the AV checked every bit.

You could also try copying the entire disk contents to your HD and try installing from there and not off the CD.

As a matter of interest do you have any Starforce protected games installed, or the Starfarce drivers otherwise present?

It's probably not the the same problem as it only manifested on running the game .exe, not the install, but there is at least one flavour of Starfarce (GT Legends) that doesn't like the DG disk - oddly enough the version with Silent Hunter 3 seemed OK. It might be worth trying with any form of resident anti-piracy software removed, it can have strange effects on any operations of CD and DVD drives, especially with older disks.

Both Macafee and Norton have become bloated and take over you system.  I recommend Norman for anti-virus.
