St. Louis, May 22. The wind was blowing out to right at Sportsman's Park, and the Cardinals capitalized on it as Oscar Grimes and Andy Seminick both hit HRs. The Pirates, however, couldn't generate much offense. Bobo Newsom allowed just 2 hits in getting a 3-1 complete-game victory. Bobo struck out 3 and walked none. Early Wynn suffered his first loss of the year.

St. Louis, May 23. It was scoreless until the 8th inning, when the Pirates' bats exploded. Kluzewski doubles! Snider triples! The Bucs ended up with 6 runs in the 8th, and that was the only scoring of the game. The Cardinals were shell-shocked. Warren Spahn goes 8-0 with a 6-0 complete-game shutout, giving up 4 hits , striking out 3 and walking 1. He lowers his ERA to 1.32.

The Pirates committed two fielding errors, but still prevented any runs crossing the plate. They seem to elevate their game when the "Golden Boy" is on the mound.

St. Louis, May 24. Virgil Trucks got the win, Clem Dreisewerd held the lead, and Bob Lemon got the save as the Pirates win 4-1. Howie Pollet took the loss.

The reporters have been looking for something to write about, so with Duke Snider and Richie Ashburn being the leading base stealers in the league, the inevitable comparisons start. "Who's the fastest runner in the majors"? Crazy stuff.

Pitt manager KG Erwin was asked about this, and the reply: "The fastest guy we have is a bench player --his name is Johnny Barrett. This isn't a track meet, it's baseball --."

St. Louis, Sunday May 25. A see-saw battle, but the Pirates win it in the 10th inning 5-4. Clem Labine won it, and Bucky Walters lost it. Ted Kluszewski also hit his 2nd HR.

The Pirates' pitching dominates the majors, with a collective ERA of 2.38. The overall association ERA now stands at 3.70.

Cincinnati, May 26. Early Wynn (6-1, 2.11) pitches his 5th CG and shuts outs the Reds 2-0. Johnny Klippstein took the loss.

Cincinnati, May 27. For this game, the Pirates' lineup is considerably changed, in order to rest certain players. Johnny Groth subs for Duke Snider in CF today, and Joe Kuhel spells Ted Kluszewski at 1B. Our ace, Warren Spahn, is on the mound.

The game ended up being an endurance test. Spahn pitched 10 innings, but it was scoreless. It remained that way until the bottom of the 18th inning. Woody Abernathy was on the mound, and with two outs and the bases loaded, Ralph Houk drove in Jimmy Bloodworth. Reds win it 1-0. Ted Wilks got the victory.

The Phillies pull to within 6.5 of the Pirates after winning 5 straight. The Phils are led by Carl Furillo, who leads the majors with a .409 BA.

In the AL, the Indians and Yankees are in a dead heat.

The Bucs return to Forbes Field on Thursday for a four-game series against the 5th-place Cubs.

Pittsburgh, May 28. The Cubs outhit the Pirates but lost the game 6-4. Virgil Trucks (6-2, 2.67) won it, Bob Lemon got his 8th save, and Kirby Higbe (4-4, 4.52) lost it. The Pirates capitalized on their speed by stealing 4 bases, 2 by Duke Snider.

Minor League update: AAA is thin, but the Bucs have a few promising youngsters in the lower levels, including SP Carl Scheib and Curt Simmons, C Toby Atwell, and 1B Jerry McCarthy. These players will be closely monitored.

In the AL, the Yankees have taken a one-game lead over the Indians.

Pittsburgh, May 29. In the bottom of the 9th, pinch-hitter Johnny Barrett doubles, and Red Schoendienst drives him in to win it 3-2. Clem Dreisewerd got the win, and Johnny Antonelli took the loss.

Pittsburgh, May30. The Pirates just pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Phillies. The Pirates sent OF Enos Slaughter and P Clem Labine to the Phils in exchange for OF Carl Furillo and P Larry Jansen.

Furillo will play in RF and bat 3rd. Richie Ashburn moves to LF. Jansen replaces Don Newcombe in the rotation, and Newcombe moves to the bullpen. All this occurs as the Bucs are set to play a Friday double-header with the Cubs.

In game 1, Mel Parnell shuts out the Pirates 2-0. Milo Candini earned a save. Early Wynn loses, and is now 6-2, with a 2.04 ERA.

In game 2 the Pirates return the favor as Warren Spahn (9-0, 1.07) pitches his 6th CG and 3rd shutout of the season. Bucs win 2-0. Joe Beggs took the loss.

Saturday the 31st is an off-day.

Boston, Sunday June 1. Double-header at Braves Field.

Game 1: Virgil Trucks (7-2, 2.83) struggled in the last three innings but held on to win it 7-5. It was Virgil's 3rd CG in 11 starts. Hank Wyse (5-5, 2.85) took the loss. Duke Snider had four stolen bases, increasing his league-leading total to 23.

Game 2: Larry Jansen (4-4, 2.25) starts his first game as a Pirate and loses 1-0. The Braves' Alex Kellner and Walt Masterson were both at the top of their game. Kellner (1-3, 4.50) struck out 6, walked 3 and allowed just 4 hits in 8 innings to get the win. Masterson pitched the 9th to earn his 3rd save.

The Phillies defeated the Cubs 6-2, winning their 10th straight and moving within 5 games of the Pirates.

Boston, June 2. A heartbreaker for the Bucs. After leading 4-0 going into the 3rd, the Braves scored 4, knocking Early Wynn out of the game. It came down to the bottom of the 9th, and normally dependable Clem Dreisewerd gave up the winning run. Braves win, 5-4. Gordon Maltzberger got the victory.

Brooklyn, June 3. Despite a wind that blew out to RF at 20mph, Warren Spahn toughed it out and went 10-0 with a 12-7 victory. 8 HRs flew out of Ebbets Field today. Ewell Blackwell (6-4, 3.94) took the loss. Spahn's ledger: 13 hits given up, including 4 HR. He struck out 6 and walked just 1. His ERA is 1.56, and he's now completed 7 of 13 starts.

Team update: the defending champions lead in many categories so far. We have the leading batter (Carl Furillo, .383), the best pitcher (Warren Spahn, who is on his way to winning a second Cy Young Award), and the leading base stealer (Duke Snider, with 24).
The team is on pace to better their 1946 record (104-50). Pitt GM/field manager KG Erwin is taking nothing for granted, though. The major-league roster and the minor leagues are being closely monitored. As KG often says: "The season is played one game at a time."

Brooklyn, June 4. Another dramatic game which saw the lead change hands three times. Bob Lemon ended up winning it 10-7, with Woody Abernathy earning a save. Emil Kush took the loss. Yogi Berra hit 2 home runs. His stock has taken a sudden upturn.

The Bucs (36-14) hold a 5 1/2 game lead over the Phillies.

In the AL, the red-hot Yankees (32-20) win their 6th in a row, and now hold a 3 1/2 game lead over the Athletics. The defending AL champion Red Sox are 5 games back. The Indians have totally collapsed, having lost 11(!) straight and dropping to 6th place.

Brooklyn, June 5. Al Brazle (4-1, 2.34) pitches a CG and defeats Larry Jansen 8-3. Jansen struck out 7 and walked only 2 but allowed 2 HRs.

The Pirates next go to Philadelphia for a crucial weekend series against the second-place Phillies.

Philadelphia, Friday June 6. At cavernous Shibe Park, the Pirates battered the Phillies with 15 hits and won it 8-3. Early Wynn (7-2, 2.31) got the victory and Bob Lemon pitched the last three innings to earn his 9th save. Mike Budnick took the loss.

The Bucs extended their lead over the Phils to 6 1/2 games.

In the AL, the Yankees beat the Browns, winning their 8th straight and moving ahead of the Athletics by four and a half.

Saturday, June 7. The Phillies came back with a vengeance, knocking Warren Spahn for 6 runs and driving him out of the game after 4 innings. The Bucs never recovered, and lost it 12-2. Randy Gumpert (7-2, 2.09) got the CG victory. Spahn is now 10-1 with a 1.98 ERA.

Sunday, June 8. Double-header. In game 1, the Phils pull it out to win 4-3. Clem Labine won it, and Ken Gables lost it.

Duke Snider suffered a broken finger during the game, and Johnny Groth came in to replace him at CF.

In game 2, the Bucs made a number of lineup adjustments to rest tired regulars, and Don Newcombe got the start. Joe Hatten took advantage of the Pirates' patched-together lineup and pitched a CG 7-0 shutout.

The Pirates leave Philly with their lead trimmed to 3 1/2 games. Duke Snider's injury forced Pitt manager KG Erwin to place him on the 15-day DL. OF John Simmons was called up from AAA, where he was batting .250, with 1 HR and 21 RBI.

Simmons will play LF, and Richie Ashburn moves to CF. Snider could be out of the lineup for up to 4 1/2 weeks.

The Pirates are now actively exploring trade options.

PS after some late-night telephone conversations, the Pirates and St. Louis Browns negotiate a blockbuster trade. The Bucs send 1B Ted Kluszewski and SP Virgil Trucks to the Browns in exchange for 1B Stan "The Man" Musial and LF Erv Dusak. Both GMs were thrilled with the deal.

Pitt manager KG Erwin: "This trade will strengthen both teams. To add a proven veteran like Musial adds immensely to our lineup. He is 27 years old, and is just entering his prime years. We hated parting with Virgil, but Don Newcombe is fully capable of returning to the starting rotation".

So, John Simmons goes right back to AAA and RP Pete Gebrian is called up. Musial will now bat in the 4th spot, behind Furillo, and Dusak will bat 8th.

The Pirates' starting rotation is now Spahn, Newcombe, Wynn and Jansen.

The Pirates' revamped lineup faces the Giants at the Polo Grounds for a 3-game series.

New York, Monday June 9. Larry Jansen wins his first game as a Pirates starter, triumphing over Orval Grove 6-2. Stan Musial went 2 for 4, and George Kell and Buddy Kerr both hit HRs.

Tuesday, June 10. A battle between two of the premier lefties in the game (Spahn and Hal Newhouser). Warren, pitching on only two days' rest, came out on top with a 2-0 shutout. Newhouser was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the 6th. Spahn gave up 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 in completing his 8th game of the season. Gil Hodges also homered in the 7th.

Wednesday, June 11. Southpaw Dave Koslo (5-6, 3.29) was the man of the hour for the Giants, pitching 8 2/3 innings in a 8-1 thrashing of the Bucs. Koslo also hit a 3-run HR in the 6th. Don Newcombe (3-3, 4.01) took the loss.

The Bucs return to Forbes Field tomorrow to begin a two-week homestand.

Pittsburgh, June 12. The Pirates host the 5th-place Cubs for a one-game series. The Cubbies pull off an upset, beating the Bucs 7-2. Kirby Higbe won it, and Early Wynn lost it. Carl Furillo homered for the Bucs, and Charlie Keller and Del Rice hit it out for the Cubs.

Friday, June 13. The Braves visit Forbes, and just before the game, a black cat wandered onto the field. However, the jinx was on the Pirates. Hank Wyse won it and Walt Masterson saved it as they shut out the Bucs 1-0. Larry Jansen took the loss, despite having struck out 9 and walked none in 8 innings.

Saturday, June 14. The Pirates win their 40th game as Warren Spahn wins his 12th and Bob Lemon gets his 10th save. The final was 5-2. Joe Page (2-8, 4.88) took the loss.

June 15. Double-header Sunday. For game 1, Stan Musial was rested, and 41-year-old Joe Kuhel played at 1B. Pirates win 5-4, with Newcombe getting the victory and Lemon the save. Johnny Vander Meer took the loss.

In game 2, Carl Furillo sits it out, and speedster Johnny Barrett gets a rare start in RF. The Braves struck quickly, and by the bottom of the 4th had a 10-0 lead. The Pirates couldn't do anything right. Early Wynn was knocked out of the game, and normally calm Pitt manager KG Erwin tossed his hands in the air, threw down his cap in the dugout, and gave his team a severe tongue-lashing. Something was overheard about "rookie leaguers", and the players had a collective look of shock on their faces.

The dressing-down had the proper effect, and the Bucs came back with 4 runs in the 4th. Too little, too late, and despite a heroic effort, the final was 12-8. Hank Wyse got the victory, and Wynn lost.

The team held a closed-door meeting after the game, and reporters were barred.

Thankfully, Monday the 16th was an off-day. The Phillies did play, however, and are now just one game behind the Pirates.

On Tuesday the 17th, the Giants come to town for a 3-game series. It just so happens that Tuesday is also KG Erwin's birthday.

Pittsburgh, June 17. Before the game, the Pirates' PA announcer led the crowd in a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" for KG Erwin, who turned 50 today. The Giants, no doubt, wanted to spoil it, and came close to doing so. The Pirates, in turn, were determined to win it for "the old man". With the score tied at 5 in the bottom of the 8th, this is what happened:

With Phil Marchildon on the mound, Johnny Barrett, hitting for Larry Jansen, draws a walk.

George Kell grounds out on a hit & run play, but "Speedy" Barrett slides in at third.

Red Schoendienst singles and drives in Barrett. Pirates take the lead 6-5. That's how it ended, as Bob Lemon pitched the 9th to earn the save for Jansen.

At the end, the Pirates in the dugout dumped a water pail on the now-beaming KG and hoisted him on their shoulders, carrying him out to the field. You'd think they'd just won the World Series, and it was hard to tell if KG was laughing or crying. Maybe both.

In St. Louis, the Phillies defeated the Cardinals 4-3. The Pirates maintain their one-game lead.

June 18. Newhouser faces Spahn again, and this time Hal came out the winner, 11-4.

The Phillies complete the sweep of the Cardinals, winning 2-0.

At the end of the day, the Pirates and Phillies are tied at 42-23.

Happy Birthday. Thanks for the help. No matter who I draft or trade for, looks like my Browns just can't get above sixth place.

Thank you, Don. Consider this -- the Browns in my league are in 7th place. Now, how could you not be thinking about relocating the team? Even with our alternative histories being played out, Baltimore, the home of the legendary Orioles, is begging for a team. It is so sad.

Thursday, June 19. The Pirates pull out a 3-2 win in 11 innings. Clem Dreisewerd won it, and Bob Savage took the loss. The Bucs have a half-game lead over the Phils.

Friday, June 20. The showdown is now set up. The Phillies come to town for a 4-game series.

Jesse Flores pitched a great game, striking out 5 and walking none. The Phillies win it, 2-1. Early Wynn was the loser. Yogi Berra and Ted Williams both hit HRs. The Phils now hold a half-game lead over the Pirates.

Personnel note: with the Bucs struggling, Pitt manager KG Erwin is leaning more heavily on platooning players. Duke Snider is still unable to play, and is unlikely to return to the lineup until the second week of July.

Saturday, June 21. Larry Jansen faces Joe Dobson. Neither starter finished, and it went to the bottom of the 9th. Richie Ashburn reached, stole 2nd, and went to 3rd on a hit & run. Pinch hitter Erv Dusak was intentionally walked, and George Kell singled to drive in the winning run. Pirates win, 5-4. Ken Gables got the win, and Stan Ferens took the loss. The Bucs regain a half-game lead.

Sunday, June 22. Double-header. Phillies vs Pirates. Sold-out crowd.

Game 1 provided plenty of drama, as the lead changed hands several times, and in the top of the ninth Ted Williams hit a 2-run HR (his 8th of the year) to tie it at 5. It went into extra innings. It ended in the bottom of the 11th when Red Schoendienst drove in Johnny Barrett from 3B. Pirates win 6-5. Clem Dreisewerd got the victory, and Ed Bahr took the loss. The fans got their money's worth for this one alone.

In game 2, Randy Gumpert got the win and Stan Ferens earned the save as the Phillies take it 5-2. Don Newcombe lost it.

The Bucs get a day off on Monday. Duke Snider was taken off the 15-day DL, but he's still two weeks away from recovery, so he goes back on the DL again. He's furious, as it's just a finger, but it could have some repercussions on his fielding and batting grip down the road. We shall see.

Tuesday, June 24. The Dodgers come to town for a two-game series. Ewell Blackwell won it, Emil Kush saved it, and Early Wynn lost it as Dem Bums triumph 4-2. One bright spot for the Pirates was LF Ralph Hodgin, who went 4 for 4. Eddie Miller homered for the Dodgers.

Wednesday, June 25. The current homestand ends with a 5-4 loss. Dick Fowler got the victory and Lefty Hoerst earned the save. Larry Jansen took the loss. Hank Greenberg hit a 3-run HR in the 1st inning, his 13th of the season.

In Cincinnati, the Reds shut out the Phillies 3-0. The Phils still hold a half-game lead over the Bucs.

On Thursday the Pirates go to Chicago for a 4-game series.

Chicago, Thursday June 26. As Warren Spahn goes, so do the Pirates, and Warren is a terrible slump. The wind was blowing out to CF, and today he gave up 3 HRs. The 5th-place Cubs defeat the Bucs 9-2. 38-year-old Bill Lee got the victory.

To make matters worse, the Phillies had an off-day, so they take a one-game lead.

Stan Musial has still not adjusted to playing at Forbes Field. He hasn't hit a HR since coming over from the Browns. He's batting behind Carl Furillo, who has been a sensation in Pittsburgh. His .357 BA leads the majors.

The Bucs also have the top three base-stealers in the majors: Richie Ashburn (27), Duke Snider (25) and Johnny Barrett (14).

On the minus side, Yogi Berra is slumping, too. He's only hitting .226, with 4 HR and 21 RBI. His platoon mate Gil Hodges is doing adequately ( .264/3/15).

Minor-league update: The Pirates have nothing in AAA, but several promising youngsters in the lower levels. Some player movement is possible, but unlikely at this point.

For the Bucs to win it all again, it's imperative that Spahn regains his form and Snider returns to the lineup.

Friday, June 27. The Pirates come back with a vengeance and demolish the Cubs 11-3. Don Newcombe wins it with his 3rd CG of the year. Joe Beggs took the loss.

At the Polo Grounds, the Giants defeat the Phillies. The Bucs (46-28) & Phils (45-27) are in a virtual tie for first place.

In the AL, the Yankees beat the As to take a 3-game lead over them.

Team notes: Pitt manager KG Erwin has been juggling the lineups all season, and the infield depth is a strong point. 20-year-old SS Granny Hamner has made 6 starts and has served as a pinch hitter. He's batting .405. 41-year-old Joe Kuhel has played at 1B several times as a defensive replacement. There's also 3B Hank Majeski.

As for reserve 2B Eddie Stanky, rumor has it that Erwin has been discussing the possibility of Eddie taking over as manager in AAA. 31-year-old Stanky has seen limited playing time, and is only hitting .083.

In the outfield, everyone has played in different positions depending on circumstances. This versatility has been vital in keeping alive the Pirates' hopes to repeat as NL champions.

Final personnel notes: the Pirates negotiated a couple of minor-league trades. AAA 3B Bill Sommers was sent to the White Sox in exchange for a promising 19-year-old 2B named Billy Martin. Martin was assigned to A ball.

Also, 2B Danny Lynch was traded to Detroit for RF Tom Wright. Wright was also assigned to single A.

Saturday, June 28. Pirates win it 6-3. Early Wynn wins and Bob Lemon earns his 13th save. Kirby Higbe loses.

The Giants defeat the Phillies and the Bucs regain a one-game lead in the NL.

On Sunday, the Cubs send up right-hander Clint Hartung to face Larry Jansen. Despite a 20-mph blowing in from right, the Bucs get 8 hits and win 4-1. Jansen (7-7, 2.77)completed the game, showed solid control by striking out 6 and walking only one, and allowed just 4 hits. Hartung (2-8, 4.81) took the loss.

Monday June 30 was an off-day.

Pittsburgh, July 1. The Cardinals visit for an unusual single game series. Spahn (13-3, 2.78) wins it and Lemon earns his 14th save as the Bucs down the Redbirds 6-4. Howie Pollet (7-9, 3.78) took the loss.

In Philadelphia, the Dodgers defeated the Phillies.

Wednesday, July 2. The Reds visit Forbes in the first of a 4-game series. Don Newcombe threw fireballs and struck out 9, but gave up 5 runs in the 6th to tie the game. The Pirates got the go-ahead run in the 7th, and Don stayed on the mound until the 8th. Ken Gables pitched the 9th, and struck out Del Ennis for the final out, earning the save in the Pirates' 6-5 victory. Newcombe is now 6-4. Ken Heintzelman took the loss. The Bucs win their 50th game, and hold a 2-game lead over the Phillies.

Thursday, July 3. The Reds' Spec Shea pitched a good game, while the Pirates' Early Wynn had a terrible outing. Wynn gave up 5 runs in the first two innings. The Bucs battled back, but the Reds won it 5-4.

On Friday, July 4, the Pirates travel to Cincinnati for an Independence Day double-header. In game 1, with the Bucs leading 1-0 with 2 out in the 1st, Reds' starter Johnny Klippstein suffered a toe injury and Ken Heintzelman entered in relief. Heintzelman quickly gave up 3 runs, and ended up losing his 2nd game in 3 days. The Bucs win it 8-1, with Larry Jansen getting a complete-game victory.

The Reds came back in game 2 and won it 5-3, knocking Warren Spahn out after 5 innings. Dizzy Trout went the distance, and Andy Pafko homered twice. However, RF Dom DiMaggio suffered a thumb injury and had to be removed from the game.

Afterwards, it was determined that the injury was severe enough for DiMaggio to be put on the 15-day DL.

Saturday is an off-day.

Pittsburgh, July 6. The Cubs visit Forbes for a Sunday double-header. Nothing doing for the Pirates in game 1, as Cub reliever Hank Behrman (5-0, 1.81) wins it and Johnny Gorsica saves it. Cubs win 3-1. Don Newcombe (6-5, 3.90) loses.

The Pirates come back in game 2 and get 15 hits as Early Wynn defeats Joe Beggs 7-1. Wynn added insult to injury by hitting a 2-run double in the 5th.

Personnel moves: the Pirates traded OF Ralph Hodgin and 2B Eddie Stanky to the Braves in exchange for two minor-leaguers--2B Al Kozar and 3B Kermit Wahl. Kozar was promoted to the majors as the backup for Red Schoendienst.

With Duke Snider returning to the lineup, the Bucs look solid in the outfield. The pitching staff could use some shoring up, so more player moves are envisioned as the trade deadline approaches.

The blockbuster is made, as the Pirates send OF Erv Dusak, SS Granny Hamner and RP Woody Abernathy to the Reds in exchange for LF Del Ennis, P Spec Shea and SS John O'Neil. With this deal, the Bucs now have the top two batters in the majors.

Philadelphia, Thursday July 10. In the showdown between the top two NL teams, the Phillies win this one 1-0. Joe Dobson got the victory, Clem Labine earned the save, and Larry Jansen suffered the loss. The Phils take a half-game lead.

Friday, July 11. The temperature at Shibe Park was 85 degrees. Warren Spahn was uncharacteristically wild today, giving up 7 walks. He lost the game to Jesse Flores 3-2. Mike Budnick earned his 3rd save.

Saturday, July 12. Don Newcombe prevented the sweep with a 1-0 complete-game victory. Don struck out 7 while allowing 7 hits and only 2 walks. Joe Dobson, starting on only one day of rest, took the loss.

New York, July 13. Double-header at the Polo Grounds. First game: Bucs win 8-4. Spec Shea pitched six innings and got his first victory as a Pirate. Bob Lemon went the final three to earn his 15th save. The Bucs slammed four Giants pitchers for a total of 15 hits, including 3 HR. Bob Savage took the loss.

Second game: Larry Jansen won over Hal Newhouser with a 7-4 complete game. Buddy Kerr and Gil Hodges both homered for the Bucs.

New York, Monday July 14. On this day, Warren Spahn (14-5, 2.83) got out of his slump and pitched a complete-game shutout. Spahn struck out 3 and walked none. George Kell and Del Ennis both homered twice, and Buddy Kerr added another for good measure. Dave Koslo suffered the 8-0 loss.

The Phillies also beat the Cardinals and still hold a half-game lead in the senior circuit.

In the AL, the Yankees lead the Athletics by 3 games.

Brooklyn, July 15. Don Newcombe wins and Clem Dreisewerd earns his 2nd save as the Bucs defeat the Bums 5-4. Al Brazle takes the loss.

However, the Phillies maintain their half-game margin as they down the Reds.

July 16. The Dodgers blow a 5-0 lead and the Bucs battle back to win it 6-5. Bob Lemon won it in relief of Spec Shea, and Early Wynn pitched the bottom of the ninth to earn the save. Brooklyn reliever Lefty Hoerst gave up the winning run in the top of the ninth and took the loss.

July 17. Ewell Blackwell pitched a 7-1 complete-game victory, and also hit a HR. Larry Jansen lost the game, and also gave up a grand-slam HR to Rube Walker.

The loss puts the Pirates and Phillies in a virtual tie. The Bucs head to Boston for a weekend series, while the Phils will face the Cubs in Shibe Park.

Boston, July 18. Bob Lemon lost it in the bottom of the 9th by giving up a sac fly. Braves win 3-2. Ken Johnson got the victory.

In Philadelphia, the Phillies beat the Cubs to take a one-game lead over the Bucs.

Boston, July 19. Pitt manager KG Erwin continues to juggle the lineup in order to rest tired players. On this day Del Ennis and Red Schoendienst are both given the day off. Johnny Groth and Al Kozar substitute for them. The starting pitching is also shuffled, with Early Wynn getting the spot on the mound. The patched-together lineup performed brilliantly, and Wynn defeats Joe Page with a 5-1 complete-game victory.
