Warfare1,

Excellent links. Thanks.

Matrix guys should know about Giuseppe Rava.
He did most (if not all) covers for the Vae Victis French strategy magazine. And they are somptuous.

Xconq is and open source strategy game with an extensive editor.......there are many scenarios to chose from, and if you have the patience, you can create your own games.....though graphically challenged, it is an incredible effort by many contributors.....

Why do you ask? Of course not! Just download MegaMek, unzip it and run megamek.bat. It works with J++ (Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine) which is installed by default on new Windows. MegaMekNET requires Java 1.4 compatibility and is launched from file startClient.bat.

Here is a link to a list of pure PBM and/or PBEM games, many of which are free (the list is too long to pick them out):

http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/pbm_list/wargame.html

These are not generally games in the sense of being programs you run on your computer, though some do have that ability. It's more about exchanging information via a central third party (referee). Definitely all strategy though.

Can I be so bold as to suggest http://waronline.net/

It's a free online strategy game that is flash-based.
There's 1-vs-1 Battles, or multi-player Campaigns.

Here's a link to an older screenshot... http://waronline.net/images/screen1.jpg

Still needs some work, but something different.

Ps. This is my personal project, and not a Matrix game

Free games, I wonder if the (might be wrong, but looks like it) author of the 'Conan' game paid Frank Fazetta for use of the artwork as background? <g>

Actually if you want to get technical all games have some flavor of "strategy" to them. Even adventure games and roleplaying games So, just about any game could fit here. ;)

MechCommander serie

This is NOT joke!
(Or if it is, I didn't make it up)

MechCommander serie are computer versions of BattleTech board game and in real time. Even though games have took more liberties over board game rules than Titans of Steel, they are nevertheless fun games to play. In addition to games themselves, community has created wide variety of modifications and missions. Serie includes games MechCommander, MechCommander Gold and MechCommander 2.

Advanced Strategic Command

Shiish! That screenshot is probably 1600x1200! Anyways someone may think there are familiar looking elements, and that one is right. It really appears to be remake of Battle Isle 2&3. Anyways I haven't played it (yet), but site confirms this suspicion.

What is greatest PC wargame ever that has operational and tactical scale elements? That is UFO Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM UFO Defense! Game has got several sequels and latest official one is UFO: Extraterrestrials published by Matrix Games. However NONE of the sequels is as great as the original game from 13 years ago.

UFO: Alien Invasion is open source vision of the original Enemy Unknown. Game isn't 1-to-1 with the original and it isn't the point. Relationship of Enemy Unknown and Alien Invasion can be compared to the two Battlestar Galactica TV series: there are lots of familiar elements but also something new. Alien Invasion has everything what the original had: Geospace, bases, research, production... and tactical combat. Most of the stuff seems to work as they did in the original a long time ago, some bit better, some bit worse. What really makes me tick, is weapon selection. From the beginning there are enough weapons to go with: various pistols, submachinegun, assault rifle, SHOTGUN, grenade launcher, bazooka, sniper rifle, flamethrower and flashbang to name the few.

Greatest difference is with tactical level combat. Game picks map from the list (as with many other sequels) and it is run by modified Quake 2 engine. Graphics are throughout good looking and probably better than in Extraterrestrials. But there are things that can't be forgiven: my bazooka guy shoots alien in building's 2nd floor, alien dies but wall or room don't get scratch. So environmental destruction is very limited (but it's still there in some places). Easy difficulty level is bit too easy: armored troops can take incredible amount of fire while gunning down armored alien with couple hits (3 for semiautomatic pistol). I've been through some halfdozen engagements without losses. Regardless this is one helluva game which brings back fond memories.

By the way, game has multiplayer in it!
