how come some coastal cities don't have a port?

My fault but i just blew a TCPIP game by presuming cherbourg was not a port

This is confusing, if you bring in supply via cherbourg why can't you embark units.

A nasty surprise for the novice player especially after many hours of play

They probably should have ports not sure why they dont but I am also not sure why you thought there was a port when it was not displayed on the map like the others.

I thought there was not a port and did not realise a city provides the same level of supply as a port

The manual is a wonderful thing.... just full of little tidbits like this.... why just last night I learned that loading troops onto transports costs PP from someone on this forum... and sure enough there it is in black and white when I looked it up....

Yes might be a wonderful thing to have a manual but mine is still in the mail.  As I am sure many of the other players manuals are.  Cant blame us manual is simply not available.  I tried downloading it and it would not download but luckily I paid to have one shipped with the disk when I had downloaded the game.

There's a .pdf of it on your PC under the game directory in the Manuals folder. Dosen't seem to launch well from the program but you can get view it by opening the file directly.

Hard to take to everyone's favorite reading room unlees you have a laptop though...

Been there tried that.  Pdf simply does not download.  After spending many hours trying to get it downloaded I gave up and returned to playing the game.

BTW still no manual or disk and I bought day after release so I suspect shipping is much slower then it ought to be since they made us pay big bucks to get what every game normally comes with.

What do you mean it doesn't download?  It should already be on your computer.  It's right there in the game menu as well.  Is your PDF viewer not working?

Well, my PDF viewer works for everything but this game so I suspect it is or was a problem during the download.  Dont know why but after a couple hours of attempting to get it to work so I could print it I gave up.

Yep it says it is there on the computer but doesnt work.

I just finished printing the 155 pages of downloaded PDF for SC2 so I am pretty sure it works but not here.

Actually there are many things that dont work on this game that all my other games work.  IP doesnt work.  Change of names of files when doing PBEM wont load.  Many little things.  Programmers are new I suppose so they have lots of little bugs.

Doesnt bother me I am having fun because game plays historically vs humans so I be a very happy camper.

no evacuation of corps from beaches is a bit of a oddity but I suppose it is ok for a strategic game. You will never get those units off Corsica, they are lost to the game. In fact any invasion that fails to gain a port or city is ultimately doomed.

BTW over at Slitherine they report that they may consider adding port status to a few coastal cities. Apparently there is a problem with Oslo because the port would block the axis invasion hex, seems to me adjusting the map here would be acceptable. I am happy about this as if Cherbourg had port status I would still be playing my TCPIP game.

I think the Ports, do not really work as planned

a lot of the Ports can only be hit from one hex, and so, no Seapower for the assault

but at least you can still land with out a port (it is getting away that is a pain)

Cherbourg a Port ... Oh Dear ....
As a German player I say nay ....
Any unit in Cherbourg would just be a sitting duck ... can get hammered by 4 hexes ..
Allies land .. won't take em long to get it .. that's for sure ..
Oslo .. I said this at the beginning .. but once again I do not want the Allies being able to have a port in the Baltic either ...
Germany would get into an attrition battle and need fleet to and Air to keep the Allies from just cruising into the Baltic ...
Can you say .. Oh dear where did all my Oil go ...

It does not matter that Cherbourg is not a port, it still provides medium supply to ANY NUMBER of allied corps that can trace to it, my original point is that if it was a port it would remind the unwary to garrison it correctly. A 'correct' garrison is the city hex itself and at least the adjacent hexes, this forces any attackers to land at least 2 hexes away and you can then rail in reinforcements.

Matters a great deal .. no stacking means .... no Air on continent ... In initial invasion ..
Port = docks for Ark Royal ... Now you can repair .. launch air attacks and most importantly .. see 5 hexes inland ..
When you dont have many hexes this is VIP ...
And Cherbourg is vulnerable to all kinds of nasty crap ..!!

just realised a very good reason why Cherbourg should not be a port, if it was there would be another place to embark troops for a unrealistic invasion of England

So i change my mind, leave it as it is, no port
