Dave Ferguson (axis) v Dave74 (allies)

After nearly 3 years of intense combat and nail biting suspense we decided to stop the game.

The west font map shows why, the allies have a bridgehead in France due to the axis player not reading the manual and failing to garrison Cherbourg correctly. The manpower situation was also critical and there was no way it would last until 1945.

We played with FOW on and the attached map is a combination of both players views.

Of course the axis player was not aware of the true situation on the eastern front.

So how come we managed to inflict such enormous damage on each other in less than 3 years of war?

I think it is mainly due to the very agressive defence put up by Dave74, causing crisis in the axis command on several occasions. The battle of france lasted into early 1941 and the germans had a precious armored corps lost. A good french defence should be able to delay the inevitable for many months if the UK has committed troops as well.

After the french surrendered the axis where in no position to invade the balkans as they only had a few turns to build for Barbarossa, I did not play well in africa having abandoned it as a major theatre, even so i managed to extract one corps before Tripoli fell, and would have evacuated more if i had remembered to move them.

For Barbarossa I only had what was fielded in the 1941 scenario. I wanted another tank and tactical bomber to replace those lost in France but could not afford it, so an italian TAC bomber had to substitute. A desperate struggle followed in western russia and the AXis was under extreme pressure as the russians concentrated on blasting my mobile units. I was making little progress and morale was low when it IT HAPPENED.

'IT' was numerous allied invasions of France in December 1940. After losing the BEF in France Agent42 had built a new UK army and flung it at the continent. I had 3 invasions to deal with plus the invasion of Siciliy. There were invasions north of Bordeux with 3 corps, East of Cherbourg with 4 more and with 2 in NW germany.

SHOCK, PANIC, what to do?, the war is lost!

I moved corps from everywhere spending lots of pp on additional rail moves, I had to keep the brits away from the ports and Paris. I moved stuff including armour from russia and shut down the offensive there. The allies did not manage to capture their port and after a turn or so their forces were helpless, I left the armour corps in Belgium to rest and rebuild and finished them off with infantry. OK i thought, that removes the allied threat for a year or so, I wish!

In russia I survived the winter bad time and even managed to cause some damage to the russians but no progress in advancing , I had not even taken Smolensk, Kiev or Odessa at this time. I was happy that the anticipated russian counteroffensive was not as strong as I though it would be.

The summer 42 offensive opened and i started to make some progress in russia against weakenin resistance, obviously he was trying to lure me into the depths of russia and was preparing for a massive counterblow. i was ver y nervous because of the situation in Italy.

In Italy sicily fell after a good defence by 1 corps and then it happened again, UK transports appeared of Italy and even USA tranports appeared. Oh No. not again! .the UK had built yet another army or two and Italy was in real danger. I had to keep her in the war as a lot of occupation troops were italian. lot of corps movements again followed by a USA/UK invasion of southern Italy, he was after the port of Taranto. apart form clearing my lines i shut down the offensive in Russia again and considerd moveing the armour and air to the west.

The allied invasion failed, trapping a number of corps in the toe of Italy, they would stay there unable to escape. Then came the Coup de gras, and it was all my own fault. Yet another large invasion of France around Cherbourg and I had not defended properly because I thought there was no port there and did not realise that ANY city gives medium supply.

Then the allies invaded Albania. Oh Oh! the soft underbelly and NO hungarian/ bulgarian or rumanian troops, the bulgarians were defending Rome. Obvously the war was lost as the allies would pour troops in and invade Yugoslavia.

I could have tried to delay the end by rushing lots of troops to France and withdrawing from russia to a final redoubt. however this was obviously a combined offensive and I would have hordes of russians persuing me.

Look at the manpower situation. The Italians had more than the Germans! At the current rate of attrition I would run out sometime in 1943 and then the defence would crumble as the allies could kill germans faster than I could replace them.

So negotiation were opened and we decided to stop at this point and absorb the hard lessons we had learned.

I did not know about the true situation in russia!

Over to Agent.

From an allied point of view -

I threw all of my resources into making a big defence of france. I shipped units from all over into the front line and everything i built in britain was sent to the front. The outcome was i held france until the beggining of '41 inflicting huge axis casualties (Also taking huge casualties myself).

After france fell i had almost no troops in the uk, but i had made destroying the small german fleet a priority to ensure sealion would not happen.

When barbarossa started i was sure that my frontlines would collapse pretty quick, but that eventually i would receive more pp'ss from the allies and maybee hrough some sort of events for russia gearing up for war.

As the initial eastern front battles raged, i decided to shift the focus by landing forces of 3-4 units in several different places at the same time. Unfortunately i did not read supply rules in the manual and these troops were doomed. I think they put the jitters up the axis though...

Eventually my line in russia collapsed altogether, i did not receive much help from the allies and there were no events simulating the russians moving industry to the interior. To hold the line i tried building as many garrison troops as possible, but this strategy was not very effective. So towards the end of our game i started building corps again even though this meant give a large portion of russia to the enemy for nothing.

When the americans joined i decided to attack on two new fronts to try and releive the pressure on russia - In italy and in northern france. I got ashore in italy but it was looking like a slog, but i do not think these troops were doomed as i could supply them, by sea.

The breakthrough camre in france. I managed to get troops ashore without resistance around cherbourg. Why did the axis not resist? where they laying a trap?

Once i got ashore in france, my british and american troops were inflicting better casualties than the russians were able to do, and the germans/italians were immedialtely under pressure.

At this point we decided that the game was done. We had both made mistakes that were more to do with not understanding the game (For me - supply and thinking russia would be able to manufacture more and for the axis - leaving cherbourg undefended) than anything else.

Overall an enjoyable experience. I would point out the following though -

1 - Britain seems to get too many pp's through convoys and russia not enough.
2 - There needs to be a reason for the axis to fight for africa, yugo, norway and greece - it is much easier for the axis not to invade these minor countries and therefore keep a smaller front, less garrison troops etc - the benefit in pp's is not big enough.
3 - We need in game chat!
4 - There are stability issues if you open up other files whilst playing - no need to do this if 3 is sorted.

I would still recommend people give this a go. I would say we got in aboput 16 hours of entertainment out of this one game.
