A) Introduction
Today’s date is December 10, 1941. Smoke is still rising from the mangled ships in Pearl Harbor. Japan and the US are now at war. It’s now a clash of steel over unknown desolate island atolls in the Pacific. Can the US Navy hold the line with its remaining warships and the help of its naval codebreakers to stem the Imperial Japanese Navy initial numbers advantage as they run rampantly eastward across the Pacific? Timing is everything. Japan must move quickly and efficiently to knock the US Navy out before her industrial might takes over the crushes Japan back to her Home Islands. Re-live history and find out for yourself.

B) Object of Campaign
To capture all the bases in all island groups to force the surrender of the other side. The CAW game engine is the heart of CAW - Island Battles Campaign. The strategic level is turn based and is used to create scenarios for the CAW game engine. If two opposing sides both have operations in the same hex than combat (Air Combat, Surface Combat, and/or Invasions using CAW) occurs to decide which side owns the base in that hex.

C) Strategic Map (see attachement)
The map is made up of 24 total hexes (2 Home Ports/11 island hexes).
Home Port (unlimited ships / unlimited air) – Japan, Pearl Harbor
Small Base (5 max ships / 10 max air units)
Okinawa, Iwo Jima, Saipan, Guam, Wake, Palau, Truk, Attu, Kwajalein, Tarawa, Midway

D) Order of Appearance
1) Japanese Forces
IJN surface ships – all available at start (40 Total - 8CV, 12 BB, 20CA)
IJN land based air units – 10 units at start (30 Total – random draw per turn)
IJN marines – 12 units at start (30 Total – random draw per turn)

2) American Forces
USN surface ships – random ships 10-15 at start (56 Total - 11CV, 25 BB, 20CA)
USN land based air units – 10 units at start (40 Total – random draw per turn)
USN marines – 12 units at start (40 Total – random draw per turn)

E) Sequence of Play (25 total turns / one strategic turn equals approx two months)
1) Create Operation / Movement (No units can enter its opponent’s Home Port Hex)
a) Japanese Operation Phase
All IJN units can move (warships to any hex, air & marines units no more 2 hexes)
b) US Operation Phase
All USN units can move (warships to any hex, air & marines units no more 2 hexes)
c) Japanese Reaction Phase
Only IJN warships at port/base can move (up to 2 hexes)
d) US Reaction Phase
Only US warships at port/base can move (up to 2 hexes)

2) Ship Repair - Ships remaining at Home Port on that turn can be repaired (IJN 20pts, USN 40pts)

3) Sea Combat (use CAW custom scenarios for battles and results)

4) Island Combat (info to follow)

5) End of Turn
All ships at sea are returned to Home Port or any adjacent port.
Island occupation. Victorious attacking marines avert to defending marines.

nice concept!

Anything you could use help with? How about BF scenarios for the landings.... that would be sweet

Interesting ideas and kudos for the effort. I like the grid you constructed.

However, my first though would be, how will you handle the resource fight between this island hopping campaign and the battle to defend Australia and retake the Phillipines?

Dec '41/Jan '42 - Turn 1 Movement

IJN Comments - Since Japan moves first, the plan is to draw the US into battle. IJN decides to send defending task forces into Saipan, Yap, Truk, and Kwajalein. Invasion forces are sent to Guam and Wake.

USN Comments - USN sends all warships to defend Wake.

GUAM IS LEFT TO STAND ON ITS OWN!!

Order of Battle
IJN - 1CV, 2BB, 3CA, 3INF
USN - 2INF, 2AIR (6PBY, 20Daut, 20Wild)

IJN Orders - Subdue Guam airstrip with carrier based airstrikes, and invade island.

USN Orders - Defend against naval airstrikes, but focus all land based airstrikes on invading transports.

Battle Results - Guam airbase takes moderate damage. A few hits are scored on Jap transports but all 3 marines units land on Guam. In Island Combat, Jap loses 1 marine unit and US loses all defending marine units. Guam is captured by Japan.

WAKE CAPTURED BY JAPAN!

Order of Battle
IJN - 2CV, 4BB, 5CA, 6TRmed(2INF)
USN 2CV, 7BB, 4CA, Wake(2INF, 2AIR)

Battle Events - USN spots and strikes IJN CVs first, but causes only minor damage. After surviving airstrike, IJN counter-airstrike knocks out the flight decks of both USN CVs. USN splits forces. USN CV force retreats east while surface force loops south around Wake to catch IJN transports from behind. IJN spots USN surface fleet and engages with its own surface fleet in a late dusk surface battle. With a surface battle ending in a draw and heavy losses on both sides, USN surface fleet decides to retreat NE during the night. US Wake airstrikes hit and sink one IJN CV while IJN transports land on Wake. In Island Combat, US loses all defending marine units. Wake is captured by Japan.

Battle Results
IJN Sunk - CV, 4BB, 3CA
IJN Damaged - 2CA(d4)

USN Sunk - 6BB, 2CA
USN Damaged - 2CV(d6), BB(d9), 2CA(d4)

No combat occurs. IJN blockades Attu, Midway, & Tarawa. USN stays home to build up its forces.

Apr '42/May '42 - Turn 3 Movement

IJN Comments - Invasion of Midway is a go. A patrol force is placed around Tarawa. A carrier force with support is sent to defend Kwajalein.

USN Comments - USN decides a good defense is a good offense. Midway is left on her own and counters with the invasion of Kwajalein.

-- News Flash --

Midway captured with no loss to Japanese forces.
A few small brave US airstrikes attacked Jap CVs but no hits scored.

***********************************************************************************

- Incoming radio transmission from IJN Fleet Command to IJN Kwajalein Command –

…large allied invasion force expected with carrier and surface fleet…only priority is to achieve first strike on carrier force…must have better than 1:1 ship loss…if no first strike, give general withdrawal… island too lightly defended to sacrifice all forces…good luck

- Incoming radio transmission from USN Fleet Command to USN Kwajalein Command –

…island has no defences but has moderate carrier and surface fleet in the area…make sure invasion force reaches island…sink as much enemy ships as possible with CVs as P1…happy hunting

Comments
IJN holds and keeps Kwajalein in Japanese hands. IJN first strike was achieved with great effectiveness.
USN never had any enemy contacts. IJN maintained good cloud cover, but USN got caught in open while trying to run into new cloud front. It will be hard for the USN to recover from this loss.

Turn 4 - The Battle of Midway begins......(written from the USN Player side)

USN Plan is to head straight west to Midway. The Surface Force will lead the way to help locate the enemy and thus be nicely positioned to cover the Carrier Force following close behind. The Invasion Force will hold until a favorable condition develops. Once the USN Combat Forces locates the enemy, the goal will be to move southwest and draw the enemy south of Midway. If successful US air attacks can inflict moderate to heavy damage to the IJN forces, the Invasion Force will proceed with a long roundabout north route and hopefully catch the remaining IJN forces too far south to impede the invasion.

The General and I played the last two nites, using one of his Midway scenarios.  I would say that a good time was had by all, but that would imply a picnic cruise or something, which this clearly is not.  We played the same scenario both times and went 1/1.  I was kind of surprised, the game ran smoothly and outside of my not being current on my version went without a hitch.  Thanks General!!

Thanks Random_Rail. Yes, it was fun. Its too bad the US is very overmatched in the Turn 4 Midway battle. IMO, the US only has like a 10% chance of winning the battle. Alot of luck is needed. But the scenario is created based totally off the strat map. So as you can see, I have played the US poorly(way too aggresive IMO) in the campaign. Plus, it doesn't help with the IJN pilots so effective. Hopefully (with enough interest), a new campaign will start soon. Ok, back to AAR.....

Hopefully, the USN pilots can get lucky and can return the favor with even more damage.

First pic ( Day 2 08:00 ), Second pic ( Day 2 09:30 )

Day 2 10:30.....So with no luck again, I decide to give the orders for a General Withdrawl. The invasion is cancelled and attempt to retreat all forces off the map.

Day 2 13:15 (top pic).....Second enemy airstrike is spotted inbound!

Day 2 14:50 (remaining/result pics).....The airstrike hits home and its bad :(
