Listening to a book on Agincourt... the English longbow (with steel arrowhead) could penetrate a wooden door 4" thick!!!

Awesome weapon, bowmen used to have to train from when they were a child to build enough strength to draw a full longbow. Its used to be compusary to train with one every day or week at one stage of English history.

This book mentions some of that, although the law at this point was that the only sport allowed on Sundays was archery.

i liked this part of the law though - if you killed someone while you were practicing, it was "not a criminal act"... ...

Year 43:

The long Roman conquest of Britain begins. Aulus Plautius lands with four legions and an equal number of auxiliaries and defeats the Britons, led by Caratacus and Togodumnus, in battles on the rivers Medway and Thames. He halts at the Thames and sends for the emperor Claudius, who leads the march on Camulodunum. Meanwhile, the future emperor Vespasian begins to subdue the south-west. The Romans found the cities of London, then known as Londinium, and Peterborough, and begin to construct a road that later becomes Ermine Street.

Consuls are the emperor Claudius (his second consulship) and Lucius Vitellius.

Claudius annexes Lycia in Asia Minor, combining it with Pamphylia as a Roman province.

The Romans now have complete control of the Mediterranean.

Warfare begins between the northern and southern Huns.

The warrior Trung Sisters commit suicide after their resistance is defeated at Nam Viet in Vietnam.*

Vietnam is designated a province of China.

*In AD 39 Trung Trắc and Trung Nhị, after successfully repelling a small Chinese unit from their village, assembled a large army, consisting mostly of women. Within months, they had taken back many (about 65) citadels from the Chinese, and had liberated Nam Việt. They became queens of the country, and managed to resist all Chinese attacks on Nam Việt for over two years.

Their revolution was short lived however, as the Chinese gathered a huge expeditionary army to crush the native fighters. Legend has it that the Chinese army did this by going into battle unclothed. The enemy's brazenness so shamed the Vietnamese female warriors that they fled the battle scene, leaving the weakened forces easily defeated by the Chinese.

Think it depended on what was "doing on" at the time!

French were dum to attack a prepared postion across wet ground with stakes deployed with no infantry in support, they desurved to loose. Considering the state the English army was in they should have won.

Also until recently it used to be legal to kill a welshman within sight on Glouchester Catherdral on a sunday with a longbow!

Baseball is like cricket only it makes sense.

Your nation is not one to talk of boring sports. Your Scottish cousins gave us golf which has to be the most boring sport ever to watch

Cricket's an excellent and highly interesting sport, played by most of the world, unlike base ball.........

Baseball is not like cricket . For a start, the cricket world cup actually had teams from more than one nation I can also manage to watch a whole cricket match, even a full test match.

As for Great Britain making boring sports, when you've been as creative as we were a few poor decisions are bound to slip through , although you colonials have your fair share of crap sports. The only 'American' sports I can watch are basketball (which I used to enjoy playing) and ice-hockey.

There's only one interesting thing about golf and that is, no actually I'm lying. Golf is terrible

So is baseball. There is still one Canadian team (made up of South American players). The World series is "Our" world.

Same thing happens with World Cup Soccar (every 4 years). A bunch of foriengers beat us at their boring game. This is why we don't invite them to the World Series (our boring game).

Hi Dixie

Something similar to Yava's if possible. I have a soft spot for Exeter, the County Class and KGVs. Camouflage would be nice too... This was why I wanted to pay, because then I would not feel too guilty about being an awkward git. It's your fault, you know - what you did for Yava has set the bar very high.

I have a few pics of the Counties on the HD at home. I can't remember where I got Yava's sig pic from, I seem to recall that I found it already colourised in some obscure corner of the 'net. If there is a particular image you wanted then I can colourise it completely for you, but it will take a wee while.

This is another one I was toying with a while back, I quite like the County Class, for a ship

That's obviously not a pic from my PBEM. The Australia (along with 7-8 other cruisers and the Repulse) are rusting along the coast of Guadalcanal where they were ambushed.

It's not the same as Robert's, but here goes

1937:
The USAAC receives it's first B-17 bomber
The Hidenburg blows up at Lakehurst, New Jersey.  36 are killed.
The Sino-Japanese war resumes.  Japanese troops clashed in maneuvers with Chinese troops at the Marco Polo Bridge, ten miles west of Peking. Three weeks later, the Japanese invaded in large numbers. In order to circumvent the pledge made in the Kellogg Pact, Japan did not officially declare war, but called the event the "China Incident."
Amelia Earhart was lost over the Pacific in her attempt to make an around-the-world flight along the equator. The flight, which began in Miami, had made it around the world to Lae, in the Pacific. She was flying a Lockheed "Electra." Her last flight words by radio were "we are flying northeast."
The purges in the Soviet Union spread to the Soviet military. Marshal Michael Tukhachevski and seven other top generals were arrested and executed for treason.
On December 12th, Japanese planes bombed a US river gunboat, the Panay, in China. The Panay sank, two were killed and thirty wounded. The State Department demanded an apology, which the Japanese provided. The attack followed Japanese attacks against Chinese civilians.
The maiden flight of the first production Hawker Hurricane took place on the 12th October 1937
