For those not in the know, the ship is the bulk coal carrier Pasha Bulker that ran aground during a storm on Nobby's Beach, Newcastle, Australia earlier this month. They tried to refloat it last night but 2 of the cables to the tugs broke and it barely moved. It's beginning to look like a fairly permanent fixture.

Newcastle is about 200km north of Sydney. It's a great joint with killer beaches, excellent weather and plenty of scantily clad lovelies . I lived there for 5 years when I was at 76SQN, Australia's biggest Air Force base (RAAF Williamtown) being just up the road.

I used to do the "Novacastrian Crawl" past Nobby's fairly regularly, posing outrageously for the birds on my sportsbike: along with every other bastard in the city it seemed. Surf culture is very big in Oz. A bulk carrier breaking up on Newcastle's main surf beach will be interesting (in a bad way). Luckily there are about 200km of awesome beaches North and South of the city for the surfers. One positive is the Pasha Bulker has generated a Winter tourist boom.

Cheers, Neilster

It's off. Good. No oil spill on Nobby's Beach. There were cheers from the shore as she was towed far offshore on tonight's high tide.

Cheers, Neilster.
