I am wondering ... besides hiding under overcast and in squalls, if the speed of the TF/TG impact the ease of which it is spotted.

For example, I spent the last day under the air reach of heavy bombers from a land base. The Japanese chose not to give chase. At night, I dashed to reach a weather front along the coast by morning. I am now keeping station in a squal line doing about 5kts. Will the smaller wakes also help reduce my signature?

Thanks.

I don't think it has any effect.

If I am a Japanese submarine captain I am happy to see you worrying about your wake at 5 knots. So the question is if it is modeled that a TF on station is more likely to be a target of a sub attack than one in transit at high speed?

The CCAW manual does say that 20kts is a good speed for ASW while maintaining fuel efficiency.

The lower your speed the higher the chances of a successful sub attack. You are assumed to be always making your indicated speed, even if on station.

Not explicitly, you are assumed to be taking sensible precautions.

By precautions, do you mean sailing faster than subs can follow you, hiding in wx fronts, and so forth?

I think the game assumes you are doing the right things such as destroyer sweeps and having a plane or two in searcing for subs (don't think that is actually modeled). Higher speed should make a sub attack less likely but no guarantee. A sub could be by luck in the right place when a TF at high speed would zig right across it's bow. As far as weather fronts that would probably benefit the sub as much as a TF so that's probably a wash.

That's right. Weather won't save you from sub attack, speed is your best defence.

So the only modded precaution against sub attacks in C@W is simply speed, period.
