Just wanted to pop in and say hello to all the Thread Brothers after a great weekend of relaxing and more relaxing.

Now, it's off to spend a little more family time before the demands of a new week start.

Year 59:

Publius Clodius Thrasea Paetus retires from the Roman Senate.

Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, Roman commander in the east captured Tigranocerta in Mesopotamia after defeating the Parthians, he set up a new ruler, Tigranes as ruler of Armenia.

In the Satyricon, Petronius pokes fun at Roman immorality.

March - Agrippina the younger, mother of Nero is killed on orders of Nero)- if the stories told by Tacitus in his book are anywheres close to being true, good riddance to a poisoner/murderess who was responsible for many deaths, including the Emperor Claudius).

A question for my Thread bretheren. I have an old pentium machine running Windows 98 in my basement (purchased about 2001). I am contemplating pithching the machine or possibly trying to turn it into a multimedia server.

If I went the multimedia direction I would need to upgrade the CD player to a DVD player. I have a spare external HD I could plug in. The issue would be the OS. I doubt the machine has enough power to run Windows XP much less the new Vista. However, I might be able to run Unix. Anyone have experience trying to run Unix on an older comp? Should I just pitch the old computer? Any thoughts?

Where's Mynok when I need him.

It will run most flavors of unix/linux but i doubt it will be that useful as a multimedia machine. What is the processor speed and how much ram does it have?

To be honest I am not sure. I am sure the video card is outdated also. The purpose won't really be to run multimedia applications as much as it will be to be a file server computers that are. For instance I have a Sound Bridge connected to my stereo. If I put my MP3s. on this computer and connect it to my network via ethernet then the sound bridge can play music off the computer.

My primary comp is a laptop and I don't feel like dragging it out and setting it up everytime i want to listen to some tunes.

I would like for it to run the new Netflix downlaods also, but I doubt it would have the memory for it.

Don't realy know about netfilx because i have never run it. But as far as a file server it would be perfect for that. I have run freebsd and linux with a program called samba and they work beautifuly as a file server for a machine like that. You might have to buy a new hd if your old one isn't big enough but that would be it.
