I am a nut (crazy actually) on reading about the earliest years of baseball. I recently found a new book and I am reading it very slowly because I am enjoying it SO much!

It's called "Crazy 08" by Cait Murphy "How a Cast of Cranks (fans)Rogues, Boneheads and Magnates created the Greatest Year in Baseball History". BTW Cait is a woman and I have to say is an excellent writer, and has an excellent feel for that period. What I like is all the baseball info, insider stuff, quotes, actual stuff that took place and adding in the cultural history and great stories from that period. Her retelling of the rise and fall of the "red light district" in Chicago is a hoot.

Anyone that enjoys reading about the early years of baseball, or just the characters that made up that period will LOVE this book. I had never heard of it (its new BTW) and I found it on the shelves at my local Barnes and Noble.

LOL... I took a flip through that book at Barnes and Noble a few weeks back but put it down when I saw the author was a woman. I kid you not. In hindsight, kinda lame of me, but how many women do you guys know that really "get" the sport? It's the same thing with the Three Stooges, do you know any women who find them funny?

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out!

There is an earlier book, which I've had for several years. G.H. Fleming's "The Unforgettable Season".

Look here: http://www.amazon.com/Unforgettable-Season-Gordon-H-Fleming/dp/003056221X

This online reviewer prefectly describes the book: " Read about the 1908 season from the perspective of a newpaper reader in the early 20th century. A facinating book, of interest to the historian as well as the baseball fan. The newspaper accounts of Merkle's disasterous decision that cost the NY Giants the pennent are priceless."

I fully agree. Fleming's commentaries are supplements to actual newspaper clippings of the time. It puts you there. This is what partially inspired my mode of reporting for my Golden Age league. Maintaining context is vital to describing a bygone era.

KG:

I also have the Fleming book and it is a very good read. Apples and oranges but I am really enjoying this new book. If you liked the Fleming book you will also enjoy this one.

I'm glad to hear that! great book IMHO. I saw the book yesterday at Borders here locally as well. Heck, I should become a book critic for the Times.
