I will now have to type this question again because a certain company in Seattle thinks I am to dumb to maintain my own computer and decided to reboot my computer for updates in the middle of posting this qustion -- GRRRRR!

Rant over, now back on topic. I am beginning to receive CVE in quantity now. The question is how do I use them to best effect. Do I just make Air Combat TFs out of them and have them follow my suface fleets?

I use them to ferry LBA around for the most part...

As the Allies they are good for providing air cover to invasion forces. As Japan, stick them in with your other carriers to make a super carrier goup.

If you are having enemy sub trouble, they would help the ASW effort.

There are three types of CVEs in the Allied inventory.  Some arrive with no carrier group and are intended as plane ferries.  You can get single engine and P-38s to front line bases much faster by flying them off CVEs.  Some arrive with VR groups, which are intended for replacements for the other carriers.  Put them in a replenishment TF and they will fill your carriers back up allowing your carriers to be on station longer.  Then there are the regular CVEs with a small air group.

These last CVEs are good for covering landing forces.  The bombers from the CVEs can attack the airfields around a landing site and keep enemy air suppressed while the fleet carriers are free to protect the outer perimeter from enemy responses to the invasion through surface ships or carriers.

The VR groups come in handy once you are on the offensive as they mean you can keep your CVs at the point of battle longer. If operating the regular CVEs in support of landings make sure you use many operating together to have the beefiest CAP possible. Their big advantage in this role is that the performance of their air groups is not degraded in coastal hexes like those of a Fleet CV. Only operate the regular CVEs singly when using them for convoy escort. They are too vulnerable without max CAP when used offensively.

Sometimes I'll take the Japanese CVEs and put them in a TF that follows KB.  If one of the CVs takes damage, there are some spare flight decks for the planes to land on.

CVE's don't get penalized in land/coastal hexes, in regards to air operations.

CAP for invasions.
Ground attack for invasions.
Bait for enemy TF's.

Wait a minute!
Wasn't this what they were actually used for?

Too historical for me.

Don't you just hate it when this game actually shows some historical accuracy?

We'll have to find a work-around for that; how about if we put F4Us on them?

Bait, not fodder.

Your own Fleet CV TF's should be right next door.

Don't go chasing decoys like the real Halsey did.

Where did you get this bit of information?

Certainly not from the manual where it says "Air operations by aircraft carriers are limited if the aircraft carrier is in a base hex." There appears to be no differentiation between Cvs, CVLs and CVEs in this rule.

You actually trust the manual...

Another undocumented feature.

That doesn't actually answer my question. *continues waiting*

This was answered a couple of years ago by the then beta team.

Believe it, or not.
