Ok am i being really dumb here?

Every time i play the 1914 scen (as CP) i get to 1915 jan-feb and i get a error message and the game seems to freeze. This has happened on the first three run throughs that i have tried. It is at the end of the barrage and combat phase of the last impulse.

How do you continue for the rest of the war?

You get an error message??  At the end of the scenario do you see the victory results with two buttons, "Continue" and "End"?  Continue allows you to do just that, continuing on with the campaign.

When the scenario is ended the game could look like its frozen, it just sits there letting you scroll around looking at the map but from here I'm not sure that's what you're seeing.

If it isn't a case of the game being ended could you zip your autosave files and send them to me at fhunter@telus.net  If this is a problem I'd like to get it right away.

I think I am getting the same error.
I get message: "Device is already open"
I click OK and then nothing happens, and I have no buttons to go on.
Top left hand corder is "Jan-Feb 1915 | Impulse 1"
I am sending you the autosave.
First time I played through, I did get the two buttons to continue or end. But not since the first runthrough.

I can vouch for this aswell. Early 1915 playing as CP. I have a screen but no way to move the game forward. Got a couple of pop up windows with OK error messages and then silence.

Wooglin, I have been running your saved games but am not getting the same problem.  I've run with sound on and off.  Does the error repeat at your end if you reload the same saved game and proceed through the victory phase again?

Sorry about this

On a side note, Frank may I take the time to say thanks for a great game.

I know there is a lot of moaning about the interface but all i can say is, it works for me!

About time we had a game for this period of history and i think it is a great!

Just got the same thing. Again. The first time I ran it from the menu. The second from the shortcut.

Frank,

Yes, the problem repeated when I ran from the saved save game "AutosaveMove.SGW" I sent you.
I tried several variations (starting from Matrix Menu vs. quick start; closing via close box vs esc.)
I am running with sound off.
I have done a reboot.
I started another new game playing other side and got the same error at the same date/impulse/phase.
Running XP Professional fully updated on a relatively new machine.

I remember one time I accidentally ran 2 GOA games at once.

And, btw, with the exception of this bug I am really enjoying the game! Thanks for you hard work.

Could be nothing, but I ran enditall before I resumed the game, and the problem went away.

I have had some success too.

Disconnected my network (had done this before and still had error)
Closed all applications (same)
CLOSED GOOGLE DESKTOP AND A CITRIX CLIENT RUNNING IN BACKGROUND . . .

. . . and I was able to progress through the end of 1914 screen with the two buttons to go on. Yippee!

Therefore, it is possible that Google Desktop and/or Citrix are creating a conflict. Easy workaround.

Wooglin,
Interesting.....I was also running google desktop when the error occurred. I'll try another campaign with it turned off.

Aurelian,
What do you mean by "enditall"? Is this a command line prompt?.

Regards,
IronDuke

P.S. Frank,
Bug aside, I would also say I have been pleasantly hooked by this game. It wasn't my sort of game (I thought) and only made the decision to buy very recently after the last batch of screenshots. It has been fun and interesting, though and I will add it to the very short list of titles I like to PBEM. Congratulations on a nice piece of work.

"Enditall" is a nice little applicatopn that shuts down all but the most essential things running in the background.

Edit: Evidently, there's something better:

Enditall is a great little program so simple and straightforward to use, I always run it before games. Haven't seen this new one.

Ok seem to have solved it for my system anyway.

If i reload the save after the error message BUT turn the sound off then it plays through to the continue screen.

Same for me - turning off the sound allows the end game/continue game screen to come up. I wonder if the problem persists in other years.

Hi!

Same problem here... happens when you begin the new year.

*Went back to my save.
*Turned off music
*Played turn
*Got the screen with "end" or "continue"
*Pressed continue
*Game continued normally
*Turned music back on

My guess... it has something to do with a sound which plays when the "end of year" screen comes on.

Pushing through 1915... we'll see if it occurs at the start of 1916 as well.

You'd think something like this would have been caught in beta testing

You'd think... but testing is pretty grueling and tiresome. The folks may have just turned the music off.

I just got bit by the dreaded end of year freeze as well. I am running Google desktop, but from what others are saying, it must be a sound problem. Guess I will have to try to remember to turn off sound before the end of the year until it is patched. this is the only bug I have run into. Loving the game!

That was it. Reloaded the save, turned off sound, smoothly proceeded into 1915.

Allright, well at least we've got the cause pretty well pinned down. Hopefully Frank will be able to duplicate and fix it.

Not to hijack the thread; although it's good to read that you're enjoying the game after an epic wait--it was kinda fun watching your squirm towards the end. ;)

The game freeze every time the first turn arrives to the barrage fase: il the right high corner remains the signal "busy" and so I must leave the game. I've downloaded many times the game and I've turned off all the other applications and antiviruses, but without results: i'm desperate  Thank you, everyone you are that can help me
