Hi.

I cannot play the game. I have installed and uninstalled the game 4 o 5 times. I've downloaded the game two times to assure that there weren't problems in the download process but i got always the same error:

Help, please!

A quick google of the error gives a microsoft page. You may wish to check: Microsoft Page as it explains how to fix this.

From the Microsoft site:

quote:

CAUSE
This issue can occur if your computer is infected with a SubSeven Trojan virus.

As a note, I have downloaded the game also, so it does not appear to have come from the game. I hate these things, my wife's pc had 5 different viruses last night when I scanned.

Bad luck. I've used different antivirus, Spybot, Ad-Aware and AVAST without good results. The runtime problem persists! I cannot play, always the same error.

I don't understand why i have this problem with GoA and however, all the other games i've installed from Matrix work fine. I have WitP, FoF, HttR, BiN, BiI from MatrixGames and they work without the runtime error. I have checked it before posting here.

What is happening? I'm not sure it's a virus problem. My antivirus and Spyware programs don't detect anything suspicious. It seems there is a Windows problem related with the file Trench.exe.

Some light will be appreciated.

What version of windows are you running? The more I checked into this it seems as if it is more related to windows 95, 98, and ME. Could you elaborate on your system specs please?

Thank you for your help.

I am not support, just trying to help from work while I have stuff running in the background I do know they usually ask for you to post a dxdiag. That might help the developer - he posted a few above us here. I am sure he will get back on this.

I have looked about a little via google and I can find the runtime error 216 but I get nothing with the address you show in your screenshot. Maybe Frank can figure it out.

Could be something related with Dual Core processors?

We tested it on an Intel Dual Core system with no problems, so I doubt it.

The first thing I'd check it whether you can update your video and sound drivers, which are from 2006 and 2005, respectively. Second would be to try closing EVERYTHING else to see if it runs without any other background programs (look for an app called EndItAll that can do this easily). Many security-type programs are overly aggressive and interfere in any number of ways with legitimate apps.

Regards,

- Erik

Thank you for your help but, after updating my video and sound drivers as you advise, the problem persist.

I've closed all my antivirus and protection programs but that doesn't resolve the problem. I get always the same runtime error. I've used another antivirus to check if i'm infected. My pc is clean, no virus.

I'm going to try to close all the applications and see what happens.

No. Enditall doesn't resolve the problem. With all the applications closed, the GoA exe continues to give the runtime error.

It's a mystery. All the other games, programs, etc that i usually use everyday work fine. GoA is the first game in ages that is giving me technical problems.

Ok, I will have to turn this one over to Frank then. I'm not sure what else it could be without a deeper investigation.

Actually I'm stumped.  This comes up immediately as the game is loading?  Or do you get to the Startup screen where you select scenarios etc?

The screenshot above is clear: when i click PLAY in the game menu, the runtime error comes up inmediatly. It happens as well if i click in the exe file directly in the GoA folder (c:\matrixgames\Guns of August).

In fact, when i click PLAY i get first a Windows error and Windows ask me if i want to send the error to their support team to improve the service. I can see a very large file with technical issues but i cannot copy & paste them. I could only paste a .txt file that is generated and attached to the technical "file" with the specs of my pc which is saved by default in my Documents & Settings folder. After this, whether i click send it or not, the Runtime error comes up always.

If i could copy & paste the technical file maybe you can see the light but i don't know how to do. I cannot copy the file or save it.

I updated my windows yesterday too but without results. I installed as well, a windows patch related with a problem between Windows XP and Dual Core processors, but doesn't resolve the problem neither.

Maybe i could take screenshots of the technical file generated and upload them here, i don't know what else i can do.

As i said yesterday, my windows and other programs & games i've installed in my pc work fine. I only have this problem with GoA. I checked it yesterday to be sure.

I'm going to try to download the GoA exe in another computer and see what happens.

Is that Vista?  I haven't seen that screenshot before.  Does the other computer use a different version of Windows?

My home computer has installed Windows XP (it's where i'm getting the runtime error). I will try to play the game in a Windows 98 pc and see what happens (work pc).

Frank, you can see above in one of my replies a file attached with my home pc specs, if you want to take a look.

PD: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.061219-0316)

I checked it yesterday (in the first reply a forum member gave me the same link) but my pc is clean. I used a different antivirus & spybot programs but without results. The problem persist. As far as if know not all the runtime 216 errors are related with virus o trojan programs. I think my problem is different.

I've installed the game in my work pc and the game runs perfectly. So i've a problem with my home pc but i don't know what is broken...

Sorry...didn't see the link proper, so didn't know mine was the same as Terls.

Trouble with error numbers is they are not unique.

There is also a suggestion it's firewall related? Do you have a firewall? Can you add this game to be allowed access? Maybe Frank can say whether a firewall may cause an issue, but I've seen 216 being reported as a firewall issue.

Also, maybe adding the game to DEP list? Again, maybe Frank can determine whether this is the case.

No, i don't have a firewall. Well, i've the Windows firewall but it's always deactivated. I don't like it so i try to don't mess with it.

I only have AVAST antivirus running but i deactivated it to ensure that it wasn't the reason of the problem. No luck.

I don't know what you're suggesting here. What's DEP list?

I found this on another forum googling for the error. It is worth a try.

quote:

Or try running DrWatson in the background and see if it gives more detail on the error. Start>Run type in DrWatson and press enter. Now see if you can recreate the error. When it errors you should see DrWatson appear on the screen with possibly more detail.

If we could get a good error message it would definitely help.

Other factors I have seen as potential causes in addition to viruses, is spyware, a possible memory problem and even registry issues.

DEP = Data Execution Prevention.

It helps you to identify programs you "trust".

Do the following
  • Right click on My Computer and select Properties
  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Under the Performance section, click the Settings button
  • When the dialog pops up, select the Data Execution Prevention tab
  • If Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select: is selected then check to see if GoA.exe is in the list
  • If TRENCH.EXE is not in the list, then click the Add button and navigate to where the TRENCH.EXE program was installed and add it to the list
  • Before you exit that screen, make sure there is a tick in the box next to the program

DrWatson detects that everything is OK althought i get the runtime error 216 again.

I've used again all my Spyware and antivirus programs in safe mode, in DOS mode and they don't detect any virus or trojan. Furthermore, i've checked the registry looking for any Subseven trojan modification (in all the versions of the Trojan) and i didn't find anything suspicious. My pc is clean. My Win.ini, System.ini, etc, are fine. Anything suspicious.

My changes of resolving this problem are fewer than finding Osama Bin Laden, for what i see.

I am curious, is yours a 64 bit processor? I saw above where Erik said the game was tested on Intel Dual Core (that is what I have but it is 32 bit). I am not well informed enough on some of this but it made me wonder. Perhaps, if it is a 64 bit, that may be an issue. Don't know. I am stumped as well as you

Yes, it's a 64 X2 Dual Core. I think the problem is related with my AMD Dual Core Processor but i don't know what else i can do. I've proved everything without results.

I'm out of ideas, sorry pal.

I'm sure Matrix/Frank are on the case and will help you as soon as they can.

Know this...when you get the game running, it's a blast (I know that doesn't help really, but it'll keep your interest going!)
