There have been some questions regarding the effects of isolating units (see http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/m.asp?m=1525264&mpage=1&key=), and I thought that it would be worthwhile to have a separate thread dedicated to the issue. Several questions that I have identified:

1) The manual does state that units out of supply will not replace readiness, but are surrounded units indeed out of supply? Does this depend on whether they are in a town?

2) Can surrounded units be refitted (Wooglin's experience seems to suggest that the answer is yes)?

3) Do surrounded units that suffer a defeat surrender, retreat through enemy controlled hexes or suffer additional losses to readiness and manpower?

Thanks for your help. I have encircled a French army in Verdun that I am eager to reduce and eliminate!

1. It is my understanding that surrounded units are out of supply, unless they are in a city.

2. My understanding is that if units are in supply, they can be reffited, otherwise no.

3.No idea. I assume that the surrounded units can't retreat through enemy units. Units that reach 0 Strength or Readiness are forced to retreat, but if they are surrounded, I would expect them to surrender.

Arinvald is correct for the final versions of the beta - we had some discussions on this - also unsupplied units will lose effectiveness over time IIRC.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for the excellent questions and answers. Unsupplied units are a great factor in the early 1914 campaigns.

One further question:

Is there any limit to the number of units a city can keep in supply (If otherwise cut off from a friendly capital or board-edge), or the duration?

There is no limit to how many units can be supplied from a city AFAIK
