General discussion forum might get a better response...

C@W is out, but it's long on interface and short on scenarios.
Hopefully a series of patches will fix the latter.

CF, aka UV deluxe, etc. I know C@W and CF are two different games, but some of us went to C@W in the mean time.

Don't hold your breath re CF's release.

It's not a question of holding your breathe because rushing it would only disappoint the buyers quality wise.

Todd, CF isn't even listed under the "under development" part of the Matrix foums! That's unusual, considering the body of the game -- the UV engine -- is already developed.

Perhaps the developer has some comments. There seems to beta testing in progress if I remember correctly.

In the early days I used Burning Steel II & III and I also have the first version of Carrier at war. I must admit that I am not using UV for the moment (WIPT & WPO are sufficient).

My understanding was that it will be an UV which switch to tactical when forces attack each other. There was a hint in that direction somewhere in a forum.

Here's the link to the CF developer's diary posted in a previous UV thread re new tactical carrier battles on the way:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1194230

You may have to scroll down this link to find what you're looking for.

I know of at least one beta-tester for CF; I guess he and the others are on hold 'til the alphas are done. But after the unfunded/untested 2.4 series of patches for UV, let Matrix alpha and beta test its heart out on this one. Besides, the competition -- CaW -- is already available and (hopefully) working on its first patch.

Mike Wood has the tersest posts I know; perhaps it's the side effect of a lifetime of writing compact code, i.e., the smaller the amount of code, the better the programmer.

As producer of Carrier Force, maybe I can answer a few questions. Carrier Force IS under development, and is moving forward. At this stage, as Mike said, it is still in Alpha testing, but is relatively playable right now. No release date is set right now, but I can confirm it is not vaporware.

As CF is under development, is there a reason why it's not listed under the "Coming soon/In development" section of the Matrix forums? There's even a posting for a possible Matrix remake of the venerable AoS, but to date there's no entry for CF.

Can you explain what "relatively playable" means?

Maybe in an effort to get it right it won't be out soon.  Remember that everything is relative so your definition of soon is?

I would suspect that he probably means that it doesn't crash every 9 seconds...

Matrix has a forum literally called "[Coming Soon and in Development]": if CF is "under development," it should be listed as such w/o fear of hindering game progress, or promising anything to anyone.

This CF thread reminds me of the threads posted after the lack of official info on how to apply the UV 2.5 comprehensive fix, i.e., is it a patch-over, is this the last patch, where is UV going, etc. This went on for many posts until someone from Matrix finally showed up.

So is there a moderator for this forum?

Technically, UV under the 2.4 series of "fixes" was relatively playable, so long as you didn't mind having your aircraft disappear.

Yup Rogue I'm still around. Busy again, as always. I never learn, haha.

The reason CF is not listed under a coming soon and in development forum is mainly because I haven't asked for one yet. The more time Mike, I, or any of the beta testers spend answering questions, then the less time we have to work on the game.

CF, in its current form is actually very stable. I call it "semi-playable" because it is not finished, nor is it anywhere near "ready for release" and it most definately is not finished and ready for beta testing. As a UV style game, it is playable. As what we want for Carrier Force as its own game, we still have a lot of work to go.

Once CF enters the true beta stage, and we have a ballpark release date I will ask for CF forum to be created - but not before then. It has been my experience - namely, War Plan Orange, that as soon as the forum opens the public expects a release anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months from that date. It is not so much a fear of hindering the game's progress, but of stirring up the public over an "imminent" release that is still months away. And then being swamped with "This is Vaporware" "Matrix is Bad" blah blah posts.

I point you to the Guns of August forum. I don't know how many "This is vaporware!" posts I've read in that forum, because that forum was around since it was in Alpha. It was active when I was designing WPO back in late 2004, and the game just came out this month. I don't intend for the same thing to happen here, so I will wait until the game is in Alpha OR until there are so many CF posts in this forum (as was the case with WPO in the WitP forums) that Matrix creates a forum to deal with it of their own accord.

I would be happy to answer any pertinent questions - but keep in mind that as the game is in Alpha stage and things are subject to change, I may or may not comment on everything (this is just a disclaimer basically, lol).

Will the game cover the same area of Operations as U.V. or will we perhaps see Midway covered as well?

Same ops area. Remember, this is UV with a much more detailed carrier operations model.

There are currently 12 games listed as "coming soon/in development," including another Grigsby title; wouldn't you know UV is the only exception (that I know of).

Please recall that I didn't start this thread; frankly most posters -- whether they're a Matrix "recruit" or "legion of honor" member -- don't do well in an information vacuum. But God forbid I delay CF by asking a question, so I'll wait 'til it officially joins the "coming soon" club.
