From who's perspective?  For the USA, they have actual "blockade" ships that are best for the blockade box.  My memory is hazy but I think there is an actual blockade rating for you to inspect.  USA will also want Frigate's and brigs for catching CSA ships.  For the CSA, brigs, with their high evasion rating are probably best for the blockade box.

So for CSA side, I should build all brigs and send them towards the blockade box, that should increase my money and war supplies?

What are steam frigates good for?

I can't give you a precise analysis but I believe Brigs are the most cost-efficient for getting supplies.  Steam Frigates are more useful for trying to break the "brown-water" blockade.  I think they are too expensive too commit to the blockade box continuosly but if you see an understrength force in the blockade box you could send a small fleet there to try to break up their blockade.  The advantage the CSA has over the USA is that it can pick and choose where it wants to fight its battles while the USA, even though it has overwhelming naval force, has to try to cover a very very large area.

Steam frigates are good for nothing.  IMHO as the CSA you should never even open up the naval reinforcement screen.   Every boat you build is like handing a little bit of victory directly to the Union player.  They will all be sunk and destroyed, most likely way before they can collect enough money and supplies to make them worthwhile.   The CSA player should never even have to worry about war supplies anyway and they certainly have enough money to build out all their conscripts into quality ground units.  If you're hurting for money and war supplies it means you're building too much ancillary crap.  Like ships.

True, you shouldn't worry too much about the navy but I disagree that it is good for nothing.    I do agree that I would probably never build a steam frigate unless the Union player was being so passive I could afford to do so.  I would buy an occasional brig here or there.

Playing as CSA i have built too many regular units, im so short of war supplies, maybe I should have stuck with only conscripts or miltia. I started building a fleet of ships to try and bring war supplies in, but it looks like it aint going to work for me.....

As the CSA you certainly do want to construct Brigs and send them as individual units in passive mode to the nearest blockade box. This is how you will get most of your War Supplies.

Steam Frigates are expensive but if you build a couple and put them under Semmes you may like the results if you send them to hunt union shipping, it certainly is a surprise to the USA most times. The Blockade boxes are usually full, and the union player neglects his shipping box for escorts...make em pay.

There is more to the game then simply building regular brigades...

The mode of units in the box makes no difference (I think I saw this on the AGEOD forum somewhere) but Brigs set to evade are a good choice.

I built some transports as the Rebs and used them to raid a union city....I got the city, but it (and the transports) were not mine for long.

The threat of amphibious ops might make a transport a useful build for the Confederates.
