Hey gang,

Can anyone explain to me how concealment works in this game? I see that a lot of terrian has a concealment modifier (normally negative.) But I never seem to be able to see units unless they fire or I run into them.

In EF I was scouting down a road with some tanks. It looked clear so I advanced some trucks. BAM. There was an Anti Tank gun sitting right next to my scout tank that fired on the trucks and killed 5 of the 6 trucks. Why could I not see it first if I was right next to it?

Also are some units better at scouting than others?

Just confused and hope to prevent these deadly ambushes.

Thanks,
Duncan

in the turn you move you can spot only units that fire on you or if you run into them

in next turn you can see all enemy units that occupy hexes  in your sight area (sometimes units with high concealment are not spotted until they fire, this is very rare)

there was ASDN addon for old EFII (Talonsoft's) that improve concealment and some units was not spotted even if they fire (AT guns in forrest for example) to better portray concealment, I believe that they work on some ideas from ASDN to include them in future patches

There is a good article that explains the basics of recon in the Campaign Series.

Thanks for the tips. So basically you have to scout for a turn and then advance on the next turn. Slows things down a bit.

How does that article change with the modification to East Front that were added in 1.02?

Thanks,
Duncan

Precisely. It does, yes.

Ultimately we would like to see a feature where your recce units can expend a certain amount of Action Points in a turn to check hexes in the LOS. Of course, that doesn't mean you would see everything, evertime!

To summarize, it makes things even harder to spot - even in open terrain.

I have found that a reduced Truck (strength 1) is a good unit to scout ahead!

Of course, any human opponent would have your hide for using cheesy tactics like that.

ecept empty truck show you only questionmark and do not reveal actual unit in hex until this unit is spotted by "true" unit

You need to advance with part of your force while the rest overwatch. Then the advancers overwatch and the overwatch advance. Or you can do recon by death. Take your pick.
